Because it sets a very bad precedent. Not only have we blown the rule of one year contracts once you hit 30, we're now saying the final offer isn't the final offer at all.
No, it’s saying that if you are still in the best 22 and we don’t want you to leave, we’ll pay appropriately.
This isn’t buying a used car where you can walk away and buy another one around the corner

I mean it literally is though. North are desperate to move Polec on, Collingwood have pushed Phillips out the door. Smith isn't the be all end all.

Who said our offer was our final offer?

The over 30 'rule' is not a rule either, it is simply a way we normally manage our list.

It just shows if you are playing good footy over 30 you can get a long deal.

Polec will cost more money and is a worse player, Phillips is probably no cheaper either and again a worse player but he at least has age on his side. We have to trade for him though.

North are willing to pay a huge amount of the contract, Phillips won't be anywhere near the amount Smith is being offered.

There's been a handful of in-the-air re-signings announced across the league the last day or so - just wondering if maybe the clubs have been given the tip on a list size decision?

North will pay some of it but they are not giving him away for free and paying a 'huge amount'

Phillips is contracted and getting paid more than he is worth.

Both are adequate replacements if Smtih leaves but both are a downgrade on him.

the difference between smith and other over 30s is that he's a free agent, has a future in our best 22 and has suitors from other clubs we need to fend off

the same was not the case for anyone else

also didnt we offer lewis 2 years as well when melbourne offered 3?

I believe Lewis left as a 29 year old

The Saints are banking on if the salary cap reduces by say 20% then all contracts will reduce by 20%
The AFL shouldn’t allow that at all, especially as these deals are being made after it’s known a reduction will happen. Last year sure, this year any FA signed should have the full amount come out of the cap for the whole contract. No reductions allowed.

If Smith ends up going to Geelong, he will still be one of my favourite ever players from the Hawks and support him in his move. I believe it is incredibly likely that AFL players have their loyalty to clubs, but that they're also aware that this period of time in the scheme of their lives is short and that it makes sense from a non-footballing perspective to go to the best deal.
This game isn't the VFL/early AFL competition where players weren't earning a living and club loyalty meant everything.
It will feel wrong to see him in the hoops, but jeez the way some people carry on about him potentially playing for our rival club you'd think he was a shiite who had decided to turn suuni.

WHY WHY WHY
Would you want to go there seriously!
1 flag in their pathetic history & on the cusp of another false dawn!

Who cares about their history? Players aren't as ridiculous as Bigfooty posters when assessing their future moves.

Face it, St Kilda are in a much better position than us to challenge in the immediate future.

i'll spew if Smith ends up at Geelong.

I also have a bad feeling we won't even attempt to land a Phillips or Polec type and just run with a wing rotation of Scully, Moore and Downie next season.

An alternative would be to target a Witherden type who would be one of the better kicks at the club, and then rotate Scrimshaw and maybe Impey at stages through the wing too. Ideally we should be targeting at least one wingman, but you know.
