Interesting. It’s probably likely we’ll play Essendon again later in the season.

The other team to play twice in the middle tier (7-12) is probably one of the Adelaide clubs.

We’ll play Eagles twice from the top tier.

As the Dees are playing in Perth round one - I’ll doubt we’ll get the double up against them so they don’t travel to Perth twice.

My guess of double ups from the bottom tier is Saints and Carlton (or Gold Coast)

Freo Home Derby possibly Round 7 or even Round 6 Len Hall Game.
The Len Hall game will be probably our second or third highest attended game anyway. No need to get a crowd of between 55000 and 60000 when the AFL can get that from a derby literally any week they like.

Is it just me or do we play Essendon twice every single year?

Given we play them Round 1, it once again seems likely.
Yep, last time we haven’t played them twice was in 2016. Think they’ve come out and played us in Perth every year since 2010 or 2011 as well

Just from my eyes they seem to be the most attended Freo home games of the year bar derbies which probably explains why. Always seem to be early in the season and/or have something unique about them to draw extra fans which probably helps.

Wonder if we’ll actually get three bottom six sides this year like the AFL always seems to do to their yearly favourite bottom six side (ie never us). I actually think some of the next six up could be extremely average next year so maybe it won’t be such a bad thing if we don’t.

We’ll probably get West Coast, Essendon, Bulldogs and two random teams other than Gold Coast from the bottom six tbh.

Hard to think of a better away game to start the year. Good stuff.
If we aren't at least competitve with these campaigners it's going to be a long season.

Smokey for Freo vs Carlton at Marvel R2. Apparently there's another AFLW doubleheader, and the only other candidate is Geelong vs Collingwood at GHMBA in R2.

Although how common is it for a team to start with 2 away games?

Edit: Actually, Brisbane vs North at the Gabba is also a contender for R2. So probably not us.

HeraldSun reporting that the final round women’s game will be a double header for the Carlton Fremantle game

This would mean that the round 2 game would be Saturday evening at Marvel Stadium - Carlton v Fremantle.

2 games in Melbourne to start the season? I wonder if it’s true.

They're stealing my content. :'(

Carlton will be playing both the AFLW and AFL games but I highly Freo will be their opponent for the second game tbh.

It could be literally anyone of 16 other clubs and it’d still be a Carlton double header.

"with Carlton and Fremantle to face-off at Marvel Stadium in Round 8 before the men’s teams play in their Round 2 clash. "

I hope you're right, but the language implies both of them are playing the R2 clash, rather then just one.

If it's Carlton vs someone else would the sentence read more like: "with Carlton to face off against Freo at Marvel Stadium in Round 8 before the men’s team play their Round 2 clash?" Either that, or the Herald Sun just don't write very good articles.

Certainly reads that way doesn’t it. I’d be shocked if that’s actually the case though.

Has a WA team ever played two away games in a row? Could be a first.
We used to play a couple games in Melbourne in a row back in the 80s. Its unacceptable now I think to schedule either team to do that however it means multiple Perth games in a row so perhaps it might be a blessing? I know the Adelaide teams recently typically have a segment of games they play away in a row, but their travel over the season is much less than ours.

I will be extremely annoyed if the AFL makes us play two away games to kick off the season. In what universe is that even remotely fair?

**** me I hope the Herald Sun is wrong about that. would be ****ing farcical to give us two games in Melbourne in a row to start the season. Would be an absolute joke
