Why give a leg up to another state that has done nothing help the AFL. Take your political views somewhere else champ

NSW has done nothing to help the afl? other than save struggling vic club

take your vic bias elsewhere champ

Time for the Swans to go back with Port , it was a good alignment in the past and you only have to look at the team in the 02 Grand Final against Geelong.

thats a better idea champ

remember plugger turned out for port Melbourne

Sounding like the NEAFL club sides will get a chance to enter the new expanded VFL. Very exciting for the Canberra Demons, if they accept.

I wonder if the Swans would consider calling their VFL team 'South Melbourne'?

I suspect it's more likely they'll look at a bit more of an alignment with Uni. There's mention in the full release of more responsibility for our academies, this might include closer linkages with Uni who already serve as the main recipient of non drafted players.

I think the biggest benefit for Sydney will be more list flexibility and, consequently, more onfield stability for the ressies. Rather than being shackled by the inability to have state league players over the age of 19 unless they're assistant coaches, we'll actually be able to sign mature guys specifically for their reserves leadership, specifically on state league contracts. That'll help avoid games where we're fielding five listed players and a whole bunch of kids who aren't good enough for the state championships, and getting utterly pantsed.

The level of competition probably won't actually improve much on average.

We played two thirds (12 of 18) of our games in 2019 vs the other three AFL clubs, and that's probably the same rough split we're looking at if most of the NEAFL and VFL standalones join the comp.

And with 20 listed players every week the Lions were so strong they'd have beaten most second tier sides anywhere in the country, nobody in the AFL saw a stronger test than we saw in the Lions last year.

Of the six games we played against club sides, Sydney Uni and Southport are good organisations with experienced lists popualted with ex-AFL and former academy sides. Even with the lower salary cap, their recruiting of local talent probably means they were better competition than, say, Frankston or Coburg. Those two clubs sides managed to beat AFL reserves sides, and were probably also better competition than bad reserves sides like North's. And with a larger cap, I assume any NEAFL club sides who join will recruit and get better, too.

But crucially, it'll provide more variety, playing more different sides instead of just the Lions every three weeks. It'll help us scout other clubs' talent, and it'll help other clubs scout mature northern states players better and hopefully get more overage NSW/ACT/Qld guys onto AFL lists.

This would be the best result for us (aside from fielding our own team) I feel.

Sydney Uni are not going to fund a team in the VFL, they will simply go back to playing in whatever ends up as the peak level of local football in Sydney/NSW. That isn't a high enough level for our reserves to be playing.

You and i are agreeing too much !Too be fair to Mase , he's always pushed Sydney footy . For costs sake and im biased Swans/Port is still a great fit. Good crowds will go as well. Watch Port and then walk to the Docklands to watch us smash the enemy.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see us spread our players across a few NEAFL sides. Would likely be the most cost effective, and given soft cap restrictions means we won’t have to fund coaching staff etc for a second team. Whilst not ideal I think this model is used in the west but might be wrong. May not be most palatable but there also might be some strength in it being able to direct players to different clubs based on the development needs of players....let’s say we had a surplus of Ruckmen for example (an extreme example of course!) we could send them to two or three different clubs and get games into each of them. I am not so sure we can go with a stand alone team.

The reason most AFL clubs prefer a standalone VFL team is so they can get their listed players to work on weaknesses or experiment with positional changes. If the Swans spread their players over several teams then we lose the ability to do this and the players never get drilled in the swans game plan. I can't see this happening.
