Though both clubs are in the midst of restructuring their coaching panel after the drastic cuts by the AFL to the football department soft cap, the Swans could not guarantee Johnson a contract whereas the Giants tabled him a three-year offer, which he has taken.....

The Swans, with Johnson's former Geelong teammates Tom Harley and Charlie Gardiner as the chief executive and football boss respectively, say the decision was "very amicable".
"It's one of those situations where footy departments are tightening," Harley said. "There was an opportunity we couldn't be in a position to guarantee in this point in time a role.
"With the reduction in soft caps and reduction of roles, the industry has to be cognisant to keep as many good people in the industry as you can.

"He has some history there and goes with our blessing. He gave us three really good years looking after a young developing forward line. A positive is he continues his coaching career and his family stays in Sydney."

I’d be expecting consolidation then rather than an external recruit.

Kennelly probably back.

I get the sense the club is very comfortable with the coaching panel sans Johnson. McVeigh coached the midfield straight out of the league so they clearly rate him highly, Cox appeared to be the main guy in the box after Longmire went down to the bench late in the year, Blakey has been at it for years and is highly respected, and Kirk is now trying his hand at a more development role. Slot Kennelly back in and it's a pretty strong panel imo.

Well Shaw will definitely have his own team to coach.

I think is getting to crazy crazy brave at the moment but fair enough if Polec has issues.

I can't see where they get the currency to get a football team together though.

This reminds me I need to watch Moneyball again.

I know it might be trivial to some, but geez I wish in this era where mental health issues are more prevalent than ever, a publication such as this wouldn't refer to a person as an "AFL flop".

I find the coaches' voting curious. We were 1 smother away from drawing with Geelong. Yet they were deemed to have the 4 top players on the field, with 19 coaches votes to our 11. Does that mean we were a much more even team? Just seems like a form of confirmation bias.

I actually thought it was fair. We were the better team on the day, but Geelong had the better players. Dangerfield was obviously dominant, and it felt like Menegola and Stewart were everywhere. I don't really think we had a stand-out player, rather an even contribution of solid performers and hardly any guys had poor games.

We really needed a Dangerfield-equivalent, someone who could break the game open for us with some individual brilliance. The three most likely candidates (Buddy, Heeney, Rampe) were all on the sidelines.

Although I do agree with Ceaser88, which you can see just through our goal scorers, we had 7 and only two multiple, it would of definitely been different if we won.

IMO talking about players that could of broken the game, look no further than Papley.

So you pull a Danger out of your arse !

Pretty dumb writer imo
Talked about Dangerfield and Dusty vs Papley and Butler.
Basically said that Danger and Dusty would be equal if not better at scoring goals.
Shows a massive lack of understanding for their roles in the team. Imo, if you are too stacked with midfielders you would choose Butler or Papley over those two guys. They offer more the structure and pressure that is needed for those jebronies to shine.

Makes me so angry.

Imagine if we just a best 22 out of the 22 highest goal scorers? That's what they are basically doing with midfielders. About as dim as a light bulb made by Eddison himself

Meh. After Reg in 2016, JPK in 2017, Lloyd in 2018, Rampe last year, and Papley this year, I have run out of anger for the All Australian "honours", and now look at them as a running meme.

It's a lot easier to swallow once you realise the All Australian selectors have no interest in adhering to the idea of it being a 'team', and are more interested in using it as a ploy to simply market their often-local big names, then the media get to spend the days following fapping over those big names and the multitude of AA's they are amassing.

The All Australian team might as well just be called the Superstar Squad. Because they do everything they can to give All Australian honours to superstars*, including making up positions that they simply didn't play in. They ignore that those superstars' performance in their actual role might not've been enough to have them in the top 4 or 5 in their roles that year.

*Unless the superstars are non-Victorians, because are you kidding? They can't just make up positions that interstate stars simply didn't play in!

Well Longmire voted, so he must have thought Geelong had the better players on the field too
