Grounds are to big when women can only kick 25-30m.

The investment at grass roots level will help

but its more of a token comp by the afl as a PA stunt than anything else right now

but if people enjoy it so be it, wonder when it stands on its own two feet

the scores are whatever, afl scoring is not as high as it used to be

most of the games are just rolling scraps with no clear possession or they finally get and kick scrap to no where back and forth

but sydney will join soon, so woopie doo

bring on the actual season

It's still a brand new game for women in the grand scheme of things. Go back and look at what the men's VFL scores were like in it's fourth season back in the 1800s. Do you think they got those low scores from playing clean, free-flowing footy with great skills?

It will take a few generations for girls to learn and become natural footballers and what they probably don't need is people saying they're shite when they are just trying to develop the game as the men once did.

The old look at the 1800s men arguement makes no sense at all seriously

so lets get this right if you watch it and its awful you shouldn't say because it might hinder development?

dont televise it then? and go develop as the vfl and come back then or dont attach it to the existng teams, because you do that to attract richmond fans, pies fans etc, then people will watch and people will be critical

Because how is the game going to grow if you don't promote it? The point is you need young girls watching it on TV right now, as unappealing as it may be to a neutral, and getting inspired to play the game themselves.

The women's game started 120 years behind the men. You have to give the game the opportunity to grow and spread across the female population, and banishing it from the broadcast and not giving it the exposure it needs achieves the exact opposite.

And the 1800s VFL argument is relevant, because there's no major difference between where the men were at then, and where the women are at now. Scoring is low, and the quality isn't ideal. Just like the VFL in it's fourth year. The first VFA grand final documented had a score of 45 vs 40. The first documented VFL grand final had a score of 48 vs 27. Imagine if the league just decided, this is crap, better scrap it, not worth promoting.

Another factor is its just part time for women i have no doubt in 10-15yrs the skills will improve but the fundamental issues will still be there women lack the physical attributes compared to men if the ball size and ground sizes remain the same.

They use the same ball as men, 50 meters is still 50 meters etc, dont really agree comparing it to the 1800's tho, going forward will be very challenging how do you simultaneously run 2 competitions side by side which i assume will be AFL end goal they want AFL all year round.

Its still free entry how will the AFL be able to generate money for the womens game going forward if its really serious in providing a professional womens competition.

Would be great. I wouldn't be wasting my time on Big Footy if that were the case

thats all great and i agree promote it, but then you have to accept people will critique the actual contest, like i said invest in the next generation and its great they can play

all i mean with the 1800s is it wasnt the same game, same conditions, different ground, not promoted the same, not the same rules, so saying the men averaged 38 in year 2 so shut up about the scoring doesnt mean much to me. The rules included don’t run with the ball etc. Also how do you know the standard was poor? did you see it? it also wasn't competing against other pursuits and activities to the same degree, honestly apart from the age of the comp theres nothing similar

i never suggested scrapping it, but maybe dont rush to expand to 14 clubs and look to 18 in the first few years? the vfl had what 8 sides at first?

i agree it will get there, but the afl promote it? maybe, seems more lip service at times, games go for just over a month then its done, played in summer etc

It's not really a fair Assessment. Many things to consider such as the invention of the drop punt and handballing where it spins backwards. The actual footballs used in the 1800's and the training standards and smoking etc etc. Best not to compare really as it's not compareable. Hope they continue to grow their sport but seems you can't publicly comment anything negative about it. Can understand the constant frustration of having to defend it but I watch and try to give it a go. Quality is poor so far but improving. I've watched a lot of crap men's local footy so it's nothing different. I hope I feel a bit more positive about it when Sydney have a team.

I swam out to Blacktown yesterday to watch and support the young ladies as they lay the foundations for equal opportunity ... have to say, despite the obviously horrendous conditions, their was lots of excited young girls in their Giants/Auskick gear (couple of Swans guernseys as well), plenty of passion and many, many wet but smiling faces squeezed into that squall-beaten grandstand.
Interesting the demographic of those that just have to critique (read stand in solidarity with like-minded morons) the women’s game... but boomers are the root of all evil 🙄

Do they use the same ball? My daughter played in Sydney comp and they used the next size down.

You can comment whatever you want, but given no one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to watch it, and it’s a worthwhile cause to support, being negative about it is just pointless and counter-productive.

I know this isn’t football related but well done to the Sydney Sixers defeating the Melbourne Stars last night. Any event where Sydney defeats Melbourne should be a cause for celebration (apologies to our South Melbourne contingent. I see you guys as an adopted part of Sydney:)). Also well done to the SCG ground staff. A fantastic job to keep the pitch in the condition it was in after all that rain. You wouldn’t have even thought it had rained from the quality of the outfield. Definitely one of the best grounds in the country.

AFLW players are 9.2 times more likely to injure their knees than male players

Thats really bad stat as they dont even do this full time so they are mothers and have daily jobs.

That's quite sad really. I suspect it is to do with strength in and around the knee and also core strength not to buckle when tackled.

Incorrect
What is incorrect about that. Victoria did take the Grand Prix from SA. Mind you the SA Government did not want it. But all the Rev Heads did. That is when the Kick a Vic' T Shirts appeared. Don't tell me I'm wrong on this. I was there. People I knew bought the T Shirts

I hate the Grand Prick , it destroyed so many local sporting clubs in Albert Park. Greatest waste of money ever , please take it back
