thats all great and i agree promote it, but then you have to accept people will critique the actual contest, like i said invest in the next generation and its great they can play

all i mean with the 1800s is it wasnt the same game, same conditions, different ground, not promoted the same, not the same rules, so saying the men averaged 38 in year 2 so shut up about the scoring doesnt mean much to me. The rules included don’t run with the ball etc. Also how do you know the standard was poor? did you see it? it also wasn't competing against other pursuits and activities to the same degree, honestly apart from the age of the comp theres nothing similar

i never suggested scrapping it, but maybe dont rush to expand to 14 clubs and look to 18 in the first few years? the vfl had what 8 sides at first?

i agree it will get there, but the afl promote it? maybe, seems more lip service at times, games go for just over a month then its done, played in summer etc
Am I right in saying that you, in principle, support the expansion & promotion of the game toward women but just dislike the product that has been produced at the moment? Is that what you are getting at mate?

I guess ultimately we are investing in the future of the sport and making it accessible for as many people as possible as a first, most important, feature... Only then should we focus on the visual IMO. Promoting accessibility as opposed to the visual product is what I think the AFL is focused on and something I agree with. People will play footy, even if it's low scoring. Girls want to play sport as much as boys do. No matter the score. They just want to play and be like their sporting idols.

IMO, once there has been uptake of the sport within a generation or two of players we might see them tinker with the model to better reflect the players as they adapt over time. The playing group itself is only new, give it time to grow more naturally and stop forcing it to expand too aggressively or alter the actual game to suit the here & now... Let's focus on the long term strength of the competition as opposed to the here & now. And the long term strength of the competition (& the quality) is going to be determined by the # intake of new players in the next 5-10 years (IMO).

I think that there absolutely should be a womens league and encouragement for the sport, for any sport. I only have daughters and if they want to play footy fantastic.

I think comparing it and defending it compared the men’s 1800s game is a false narrative, the game was completely different.

I also think if you align it with existing afl clubs then you are trying to tap into the existing framework, Eg come see bitter rivals Carlton and Richmond play. Ideally for it to last as a comp it will need fan buy in on a large scale (they seem to want 18 teams quickly). To get that engagement and that buy in it can’t be above criticism because it is a good cause

I think the afl have chased after the virtue brownie points by making a comp, but it seems rushed to expand and the model
Is odd, I mean a quick conference comp In summer? Rushed expansion leading too awful footy? It’s lip service

I totally agree you invest in the next generation that’s how you fix the level, but let’s make a decent length comp, play it in the right season maybe? And how about have 6-8 senior sides so it’s a better quality product

Expand all you like at junior levels. I think the men’s league expanded to 18 too quickly as well hence issues with standard

People are too quick to make criticism a gender issue In this instance when sometimes it’s just a shit game. Looking at improvements will also help fix the next generation

My main thing was you can’t have this national comp that is tied to a club wearing the colours etc then not be able to discuss it it’s poor or not? People just won’t bother and it will be for nothing

I watched a bit of it, I’m going this weekend

The concept it fine but it needs a lot of work

So does the swans forward line

Didn’t they rank us first a few years back and absolutely no one on here bought it and wished we weren’t first because we were better when we were under the radar?

I remember bedford said it was shit

There are so many holes in this.

Geelong conceded the fewest points last year a considerable margin yet ranked 16th this year for defenders? Did they all retire at seasons end?
Seriously why read the crap , not having a go at you mate .All it does is give David King something to bullshit about.

Just saw a stat on twitter after someone asked , which team has the longest period of not being beaten by 100 points and it's us in 1998 , next was Scumthorn and the Filth in 05. Good it be that we have 8 defenders every week.

8? more like 16

but our defence has been excellent for a long period thats for sure

If the whole team plays defence like Geelong does then it doesnt surprise that they can have a "bad" backline but still have a good defence.

Geelongs midfield defence was one of the best last year, would have helped a lot in scores against.

A slow offensive tempo will also lower scores against just as much but that means nothing about the individual value of their defenders.

Lots of factors involved.

These rankings are basically just an almagamation of all their quantifiable stats from the 2019 season for every player on the list. Nothing more or less. Wouldn't take much to heart.

To a point agreed. However as good as Geelong's defence is, they are ageing. It's why I recon they took a very good utility KPP in the draft this year in De Konening (makes sense). I wouldn't rate them 16th, but I think it is somewhat justified.

We have a worst rated midfield than the Suns and Dockers

Going to take few drafts to restock in the guts.

Not sure i agree with Carlton being last Cripps, Walsh, Murphy is decent

Purely on the midfield Suns have a good crop, they are all potential rather than output though. Dockers do have the 2 time reigning Brownlow Medallist, that sort of helps.

I haven't exactly lost sleep over it I just don't agree with it
