Does the club let players pick numbers or does the club tell the player which number they are?

Obviously Kemp gets 17...being part of 17 and all that.

I would imagine the club asks them if they have any preference, and things evolve from there.

A lot of players pick numbers that are special to them, be it because they wore them at junior level, or because it was worn by an idol of theirs.

Kemp pick 17, Jack Martin took over from former sun/blue Jarrod Garlett, Pitt took his Hawthorn number, Newnes multiplied his saints number (16) by two and got 32, ok I was going strong until the two Sam's but I guess they wanted to be locker pals cause they have the best name in the world duh, Honey is a massive Trent Sporn fan and finally Phillips could've asked for 38 as his two junior numbers equaled 38 but Finbar spooked him so he decided to sit next to him for protection.

#32 used to be a famous wingers number at Carlton with Quirk and Glascott. Newnes probably fits the bill.
I always equate #20 with defenders. Lofts, southby and now Plowman.
#1 of course should be a silvagni in perpetuity.
Probably a quirk of convenience when numbers become available but I like numbers being equated with positions.

Fitzy must have used his political stroke to veto Cain Ackland getting the 3 as a ruckman.;)

Poor ol Doully must have looked on in horror.

Uncle Ed Curnow(No.35) looking after all the new lads surrounding him in the locker room.

Uncle Ed is the exact player I would want hanging around the new kids.

Showing them the value of hard work and dedication.

And throwing the lads a sly head nod to the champ in locker 30 with a "not like this nutter, like me".

*i love the nutter. Bit loose, but so are many champs. There's plenty of diff between "loose" and "Fev".

Imagine fusing the natural talent and athleticism of Charlie with the dedication and reliability of Ed.

Hmmmm....I think I just discovered how we invented Kouta.

I'm with you. I suspect locker buddies is the most important factor in number allocation. Martin is as close to Eddie as possible. Kemp next to Walsh, as midfield buddies for the next decade. And so he can learn from Walsh's professionalism. And the Sam's together as new draftee buddies. Anyway, that's my guess.
