Lynch 199

What's my point - upper body and or lower body strength and weight, length of arms, spring, speed and agility. Pretty hard to find a player even in a generation who has all those (Wayne Carey 192cm), (Pavlich 192cm) Hogan (195cm) .......the defender L Ryan (186cm who defended well on Hawkins). Carey had all the criteria to be successful.

Josh Creasey at 18yo and 194cm and 94kg appears to have quite a few of the criteria mentioned to be exceptional - time will tell.

Yeah wingspan is important. Do they measure that in footy much? In basketball it’s nearly as commonly referenced as height

Taylor and Wtgo probably know better....but as far as I know, standing jump, running vertical jump, agility run, sprint, endurance run, yo yo, kicking efficiency and clean hands tests, height (all body only), weight (all body only), and yes apparently arm lengths and hand size are recorded too.

The 'all body' weight I think is interesting as there is really a proven difference in lower body and or upper body strength, or balance of both, that is usually observable in a young potential draftee. No matter how much physical conditioning later players put on there always seem to be those few who have an excellent balance of upper and lower body weight and strength along with agility and speed (Carey).

Interesting that Jamarra-Ugle Hagen (195cm) is compared to Franklin (196cm). I think Franklin's only weakness has been lower body strength in one on one duels in the goal square for example. No doubt these days sides plan a collective spread of the criteria needed in the forward six rather than expecting one player to be able to do it all (watching Wayne Carey's highlights is really something).

I was probably a little down on our selections Wednesday night. I don't regret taking any of the players as individuals but such a poor effort on the key forward stakes was what got to me. Seriously we havent had a forward line that kicked a decent score in over a decade.

Consequently I am most excited to see how Treacy goes. Forget the discussion about the 500 bazillion defenders fighting over 3 spots. I'm wondering who gets dropped so we can play The Big Racy. If he continues with the hip and soulder stuff perhaps we can dub him Captain Crunch.

Reckon you'll be waiting a bit if he's as unfit as Duff and Quarters were suggesting.

So he's not that unfit?

I don't think we know for sure. There was a very brief suggestion from Duff on his podcast that this may be the reason why he slid.

His 2km time trial was very good however and there's an interview in the middle of the year where his coaches praised his work ethic and his hunger to learn and get better. It reminded me of the reports Tabs received when he was drafted. Fingers crossed this is the case.

Haven’t heard the podcast but I am not sure he was a slider. Just not rated from what I can see. He is a longshot as are most rookies, but he is exactly the type we should have on the rookie list.

I don't think he is a slider either. He just held his place from last year (like most/all Vics) basically even though he might well have climbed significantly if he played.

If he has the right attitude (which we seem to draft exclusively these days) I think he is a better than average rookie chance since he has enough to find a place.

Just listened to the podcast from Bell’s interview with Sports today on Thu evening.

His comments on Treacy were interesting. Aside from the his aggressive hunting the ball attitude what impressed them most was the hard work he put in over the offseason. He trimmed down (improved skin folds), increased speed and much improved his endurance (ie 2km time came right down). He said he is a hard worker and comes from a great country family.

Looking at that result of just under 7mins for 2km it is from my working out about 150-170 metres behind the elite group. When I say the elite group I mean those just in front of Chapman. He has achieved that himself off no games and minimal footy training. Vic were locked up in Quarantine for sometime during the season also.

As a comparison it would be good to know what Hughs best time was?

From memory Twomey was miles off with his 2nd last phantom last year and then the night before the draft all his mail came in and he released his last phantom that was really very accurate. Feel for him this year because it must be so much harder to get the scoop from clubs when it is all happening virtually.

* except Essendon who like to have their inner workings up on the whiteboard behind them in Zoom conferences :)

Both in Trade and Draft Period it looks like it be Vitrual was lot hard for Jurno's to get Info/Scoops on what was Happening

Individually I really like the players we drafted but can’t understand the overall strategy.
Since ‘16 we’ve drafted 14 players in the top 50 made up of 6 mids, 5 def, 2 fwds (only 1 remains, super talented but perma injured) and a ruckman. It seems very skewed.

I guess the future will see us continue with Hogan/Bennell type trades but I’d really prefer we simply use more top picks on fwds. Not every pick will work out but multiple options seem better than 1 high priced player traded in which hasn’t worked in the past.

I understand what you're saying about previous years but which forward could we have taken with our first pick this year?

You're also assuming all the defenders can only play as defenders.

Just to be clear I know zero about draftees but I did like highlights of Henry, Cook, Poulter, Stone, McMahon and Neale who were thereabouts on the night. So would’ve been happy with any of them.

I’m not sure what else to assume. Is there a long list of players that Freo (or any team for that matter?) has managed to convert from defenders into A grade fwds? Do you feel the best path fwd is to continue to just select mids and defenders and convert them?
