This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

Heard from a few fairly reliable sources recently that Freo is preparing a big play for Mihocek. Heard this before the McCarthy news FYI. Seems they believe he's very gettable due to the cap squeeze at the Pies from them prioritising Moore and De Goey.

Did seem odd, but with McCarthy gone and you guys apparently considering throwing Hogan down back, it starts to make more sense. Also have been told Pies are chasing Wright and Schache, which would make sense as both would be cheaper replacements for Mihocek if Freo do make a big offer that can't be matched.

Please don't take this as me suggesting he's definitely heading out west or trying to stir sh*t or anything like that - clubs chase players all the time and 9/10 cases don't eventuate. All I've been told is Mihocek is a reasonable chance, not that it's 100% happening.
Doesn’t make any sense to get another tall.

We have Cox,Hamling,Pearce,Logue,Lobb,Taberner and Hogan as key position players.

We need a small forward who can kick goals consistently. A Dan Butler or Tom Papley type. To me that’s the biggest hole on the list at the moment. Remains to be seen if Henry is the answer, and even if he is, it will be 2023 before he starts to really impose himself on games.

I think he will make an impact long before 2023.

Henry had no preseason and hasn't had any football, I'm expecting a preseason and actual football under his belt will see him stepping up quite a bit into next season - to me the big question is where he steps up from by the end of the season, how many lessons are learned and nerves settled.

We should try and poach that Michael Walters kid ;)

I personally think we already have the personnel, we just need to get them on the park (eg Sturt, Hogan), get them back in form (Walters), fix confidence issues (Lobb), develop them (Henry, Freddy), and make the forward line function as a unit (like our backline does).

Someone on this thread put out a theoretical question of what we were missing and my answer was a Toby Greene type. That mid sized quick footballer than is strong overhead. Mihocek ticks this box plus he's got a huge boot so he's dangerous from outside 50. I don't see him as a KPF type to challenge Tabs or Hogan. With Tabs, Lobb, Fyfe/Walters, Henry, Sturt and Mihocek as a forward 6 that is nightmare matchup stuff for oppositions.

Don't believe the Mihocek stuff for one second. It doesn't make any sense considering his age and the players we already have. It would be shocking list management.

If we want to make a big play, then try for Bolton. Offer him a lot more than the Tigers could pay him and then give up our first rounder if we can entice him west.

I don't want trades this year...maybe have a punt at Zac Williams in the free agency period.

Hit the draft...with the academy kids I feel like the next two years are massive free hits for us...I wonder how much the possibility of Kobe Farmer as a small forward next year may affect our thinking on players this year...if he's projecting as a capable small forward option to go with Henry, we could really hit the draft hard for midfielders...Western kicking goals and racking up possessions helps too...Mundy, fyfe and Walters aren't getting younger and Hill is almost cooked

I feel we have coverage elsewhere if we can get everyone fit.
If not maybe a KPB but Cox may have solved that issue now

Is Mihocek quick? He looks one paced to me.

I would rather swap Mihocek for a true crumbing quick small forward.

It’s been our biggest hole for years imo.

Good call on Shai Bolton, he's exactly the sort of player I've been talking about in my ramblings for an emerging mid who's not just an accumulator. A grade talent, class, skills, kicks goals, still emerging so lower profile than other A graders. Richmond would want a lot, we'd have to give up a first rounder which I would at this point in the rebuild where we're looking towards finals. Would round off the midfield beautifully.

Pick 6 or so for Shai Bolton? gross

Henry and Bolton are both outside mids or forward flankers. I agree we need more outside players, but I think we need a specialise forward pocket as well.

I'd keep this years pick and go a future first for him, with steak knives if needed. We're looking to play finals next year and for a sustained period IMO. Now's the time to go for trades like this. We don't need to stack up on 18 year olds unless they are special talents.

Edit: I'd liken it to trades such as Prestia to Richmond, Yeo to Eagles. Clubs looking to take the next step (which they did) and round off their midfield

You think Tabs is sh*t, yet have Larkey in the same conversation as King, Darling and Hawkins?

The crap I've read about Tabs the last few days is legitimately the worst stuff I've ever read on this board, more cringe than the slimes board.
Where did I say he's s**t? If you read carefully, I have said he's putting together a very good season. All I've said is if someone offered pick 20 I'd take it. I', probably over-rating pick 20, put wasn't Fyfe drafted at 20? It's a good pick.

Not sure we are ready to take that step. Bolton is a great inside mid, very dynamic, we’d end up like Melbourne, everyone wanting to play inside.

We need more players who can play the fat side of the ground and dominate. Wilson is very good. He was isolated on the weekend with a lot of space around him and won several one on one contests.

We need to improve our outside runners. Hopefully someone like Young could transition to a wing, or even Wilson to the wing with Young replacing him down back. A lot to like, but I’d be dead keen getting a winger.

As an aside:
Ugle-Hagan and Campbell...

Could both get bids in the top 6? Are they worth that to both Bulldogs and Sydney....Particularly Sydney?

Could we off load our 2021 first to either of these guys this year for an extra first this year?
Yes. Particularly if Papley is traded to Victoria for a first round pick. That pick would be eaten by the Campbell bid meaning they effectively trade Papley for Campbell, which isn't ideal.

Carlton currently hold pick #9. Trade that for Papley.

Trade #9 to Freo for our 2021 first round pick.

Then we have #6, #9 which becomes #8 and #9 after deficit. With "our" first being pick #9, Carlton's former pick being #8
