Cunners issue is, I think he doesn't read open play well. Excellent at the instinctive stuff, grab and dish, hitting gaps, reading the ball off hands, just not at getting to good spots to receive.

I think maybe permanent mid might be his best position

I’ll say it again, he should be replicating Zac Williams makII. ZW rests, DC takes over in the guts. Continuous zip around the contest.
Get some serious mind & mid training into him.
Training reports always have him showing his wares with exceptional talent.
Russell reckons he’s an elite athlete on many levels.
Season# 6. Time to Deliver!

2021& 22 will be significant list management years and if all goes well will propel the team to 17th flag.
We’re carrying too many occasional performers and perennially injured players won’t cut at top level.
Daniel O’Keefe & Luke Power are now the corner stones of team development and improvement, Russell will need to perform miracles too , We’re in good hands but may take 2 to 3 years yet to sort our list out, patience is needed yet , it’s onwards & upwards for Baggers, It’s a great feel.

Stocker, LOB, Dow, SPS, Cuningham , Kennedy, JSOS.

End of 2021 - who will have stepped up?

SPS - for mine, the only one who has really proven himself. Move him up the ground - this guy is Michael Long v2 (and just as quick).

JSOS - yep hard at it, bleeds blue, can play forward/mid, but needs a big 2021.

Kennedy - see JSOS (bar the bleeds Blue bit). Better mid than Jack, but injuries keep stalling him.

Cuners - the could be anything guy, who likely won't be much at all. His best is stellar, easily A grade stuff. But the 90% of games where he goes missing. Last chance saloon for David.

Dow - Paddy looks the goods physically now. Can he deliver?

LOB - needs a small miracle imo. Best of luck to the lad.

Stocker - personal issues, rumours of not being liked by the playing group blah blah. But can play and has the goods too. Hope he fires his best shots.

Reckon three of this lot, maybe four, will move on (or be moved on) at the end of 2021.
Hope it's Dow as he's got a point of difference in the midfield.

So bullish about what we have put together thus far.

Saad will do very nicely taking Simmos spot.

Williams has that toughness we need and will relish being at a big Melb. club....will quickly become a fan favorite.

Fogarty will go straight in the middle IMO....An outstanding prospect with a lot of Jimmy Bartel bout him.

Carroll looks like he could be ready to go and highlights ooze class and composure, and that left boot!

Durdin from all reports could be the next Eddie Betts......Hope so because the old one is in need of an upgrade.

We have filled the needs our list required and with a repaired Crippa and another year older Walsh, TDK , Setters and Harry.......

Martin should be better year 2 and hopefully he can give us a whole year of what he showed early this year. Could turn into
another A grader with consistency.

Caleb back.... Leon Cameron said of all players to leave GWS he was the one he most regrets...... A big 2021 would not surprise

Still very positive about Jacks upside....We need what he brings , passion, determination and guts. ( the nut does not fall far from the tree)

Newman showed us he is a top line player in what we have seen and will be pushing hard for that other HBF role.

Kemp??? Lets hope so....so highly rated by club.

And if we do finally get a fit Charlie boy back well that would be the cherry on top!:D

I am excited... Finals ???
You better believe it.....the most exciting young list with a wide open window to jump through.

I too think Fogarty has 'it'.

Developing through the Cats' system can only make him a better player. Can't be compared to Smedts or Lang (thankfully). Both were broken on arrival.

Taken at #22 in the 2017 draft (this was Dow and LOB's draft), 2021 will be his 4th season in the system.

Injuries have restricted him to only 23 games (most in his debut season) but he looks to have that well developed upper body so typical of Cats' players.

They do in 2-3 years what our players do in a decade!

Comments on his Round 5, 2018 (his 5th career game - he played the first 7 games of the season in his debut year - that says something):

Lachie Fogarty
Geelong’s new recruits are hard to separate from the rest of their side due to their elite performances. In their match against Port, Fogarty had an excellent run of it. While 17 disposals with nine contested is a decent stat, it’s Fogarty’s ten tackles that really caught my eye, all of which were completed without giving away a free. He also slotted away a goal and had five score involvements. Fogarty is developing well with Geelong and should be watched closely in the coming years.

Twomey's take on him in his 2017 Phantom Draft? Had him going at 15.

LACHIE FOGARTY
Midfielder
Ht 179cm Wt 75kg DOB 1/4/1999
From Western Jets/Vic Metro

Plenty of clubs rate Fogarty pretty highly, and his numbers do look good across the year. He's clean with his hands, smart and clever by foot and he chips in with goals on a regular basis. He's also a consistent tackler who applies good defensive pressure when stationed in attack. Fogarty might start as a small forward, but once his running improves he should be able to get into the midfield. If the Lions grab Cam Rayner at No.1, then his close mate Fogarty will appeal a little more to couple the two for a move to Brisbane.

I see Fogarty as a Darren Hulme type - with a fair bit more polish.

Go Blues!

My Cousins young fella who is Horrie Clover's Great-Grandson is in the Stingrays squad next season. Would be a good story if he made it to the mighty Blues
I hope our guys are aware.

We actually have someone on here who is related to Carlton royalty?

Hope so these rookie selections going forward are the makings off great lists

They are important even if they don't make impact in your main team.
You'll mostly find that the better teams have the better VFL teams. This has been the story for years now.

In the case of Richmond though -
2014 RD netted them Short, Castagna, Lambert & Soldo. Not a bad outing right there given the impact they've had.
2015 - Chol
2017 - Baker
The highest selected player from that group was Short @ #11

Us? Gowers @ #6 - Glass-McCasker @ #1 - LeBois @ #5 - Matt Shaw @ #3 - Goddard @ #1

Selections? Development? Being in a poor team? Maybe a bit of everything but the difference is stark.

Development appears a weakpoint. I just don't get a sense we teach young players the game craft required in the seconds to the extent of other clubs. Certain young players need to be played early. I think if Stocker, Honey or Philp for example, shows any form, we need to back them in. They need to play ahead of murphy & betts

And the man that was part of that Tigers recruiting team was Austin.

We are only now getting our development team set in place with Power, O’Keefe and most recently Baker so I expect our development program to go forward in leaps and bounds, this was all part and parcel of the rebuild which was whole of club.

I think the evidence has shown this up to be the case and hence our dive into attaining real development coaches.

Not saying we've been strictly sink or swim, but our second tier squad was always lacking the right encouragement and development at VFL level by my observation. The squad also contained probably a few too many players that didn't contribute to the whole. e.g. O'Dwyer, JGM, LeBois, BSilvagni etc and then some senior players didn't look particularly interested either; Shaw, Mullett, Garlett whereas players such as Goddard, Polson, Moore, Kerr...at least put the effort in when at the club. Can't complain about them.

There will be a few spots opening up in the next couple of years but it is going to be tough for several t make an impact......but you know what? That doesn't matter if our climb to becoming a genuine force comes about.

I could not agree more re giving these guys a go before Murphy and Betts next year. We've done the loyalty thing for them both this year.(which we should have)
I think the club would agree that we haven't been that good with development. Changes were made and then 2020 happened. Set us back at at crucial time and possibly cost a couple of players their careers.
A proper VFL team and good people will see results now I think. Unfortunately our big rise may be delayed by a year until the new system starts to work.

Agree Harks.

I think that the club will benefit from a basic game plan that lasts more than a year or two. If we keep the same system it makes it a lot easier to recruit for specific needs.

We then play the newbies in the correct spot in the two's and develop their specific craft that they were recruited for/ or earmarked for.

Those past names never had a chance at our club in the past. I think we are starting to get our systems right.

I think our development has always been strong through the rebuild

Saints were moaning about development prior to their rise, same as the Lions, which we have been ahead of through similar rebuilding timelines

It really hasn't been, at least not for my direct observation.

Bolton was far too 'educational'
That may be fine for some, but it was always stop/start at training. Too many words, not enough action.
Too NFL and not enough AFL.

It's hard to judge just how good a coach is from a distance, but Fraser just didn't seem like the right guy for our young squad.
There was little verve or bounce in his delivery to the players. No one seemed to be truly invested in what he had to say.

Now, there is a lot more to player development than for the principle coaches alone.
Maybe we just won't know what good development is, until we really see it......and I don't think we've really seen it.

Development is one of the main reasons Bolton got the gig, and he did a good job in his first few seasons but ran out of steam in the end. I've always felt that the quality just wasn't quite there, dating back to the turn of the millennium. We are getting closer now, though the question mark on Charlie has me wondering if we have enough yet.

You have Newman ahead of Docherty, was this a mistake?

There is no coincidence that the strong vic clubs over the past decade have also had strong VFL sides. I am hopeful now being stand alone we can build a strong cohesive unit playing 2s that when they step up they slot straight into a role.
