Thoughts on Isaac Smith to Carlton.
I realise he's 30, but he brings something we really. Outside run and a good ball user.
He also bridges a gap whilst we develop other players.
As he's a UFA, we don't have to trade with Hawthorn.

I would because he can show our younger players what it takes to train at the top level in order to be successful.

We need a guy who has been there, done that.

If he says something, none of our guys can turn around and say 'Who cares? What have you done in your career?'

A forward line of Charlie, Harry, Gov, Martin, Fisher and Stephenson would be so scary yet exciting.

25 goals one week and a combined 10 touches the next.

I’m not sure we are in the position to take a punt on Stephenson as good as I think he is.
That’s my worry, I’d love to
But probably not worth it. I imagine Collingwood would want a pick around that 10 mark in this compromised draft.

They won't get that.

You don't get picks of that value for players you don't consider as part of your starting 22.

It was a big reason why the industry was valuing Jack Martin as a second rounder.

It's a completely different story if he was playing all year and just been out of form. That would show how much they rate/value him.

I'm all for it. Split our first. Most likely pick 7-8 and try to trade for 2-3 players such as Stephenson, Saad and Graham.

Regarding JSOS vs McGovern, I don't think there is a debate to be had, personally. Teague likes a three tall forward structure and whilst McGovern can be one of those, Silvagni simply cannot. He might bring the effort, football nous etc but he absolutely cannot play as a tall forward. He can't mark the ball as a leading tall, nor hold his ground to win one on ones. Additionally, bloke can't kick straight for goal - and he's one of many in that regard.

Reality is JSOS can't play the McGovern role, and as such I'm not sure he gets a gig in the forward line at all.

I'd argue most EDFL reserve players could play McGovern's role.

But agree JSOS hasn't shown to be a forward. Better up the ground.

So will probably play forward pocket. :p

Martin wasn’t contracted, Stephenson is that’s the difference. We would have never got Martin for a second had he been contracted. They won’t just push him out for a late first in a year like this, it would be completely pointless. look what we gave up for Marchbank and Setterfield, Stephenson has ten times the amount of runs on the board as them.

It does make a difference, but a contract can work against you if you're trying to relieve your salary cap.

Collingwood's cap is tight and they're looking to bring in a key forward such as Brown. That may force their hand and work against them.

In saying that, I'm looking at it through the eyes of a Carlton supporter. Even so, Stephenson's trade value would be a late first at best. Don't think they get much more for him.

The fact of the matter is they don't rate him as a starting 22 player. That impacts his value.

Collingwood need to let Stephenson punt on himself again. Just a same game multi dabble +25 posessions and 3+ goals a game he will turn into Judd.

They’ll have Ried, Pendels and Beams off the books very soon so they should be able to find the coin rather then push out one of there very best talents. They set the price, trading him for a late first would be like us trading someone like Dow for a pick in the 40’s. It just makes no sense to lose a great talent who is a proven player for a late first when they draft is so compromised. Even if they were going to on trade the pick you aren’t going to get anyone half as talented as him for a pick in that range.

Against the grain but I think Teague is right. In the small pressure forward position Eddie is still best 22. Along with Gibbons and Fisher, these three are probably our first choice. But its clear that while his pressure is still good, other aspects of his game have fallen off a cliff. We need players like Honey to push him out and keeping Eddie on the list at reduced cost isn't a terrible move. We should look to either draft, trade for a SF or look for Honey to continue his development and take Eddie's position very early next year if not for round 1.

Would have liked to see Teague asked about his justification for keeping McGovern in the team. If he justifies that Eddie is still best 22 based on output wonder what his reasoning there is.

That's not the point though, you could shuffle players down the line

The only players Betts is keeping out are Owies, Honey and possibly Philp
Guys like Fisher, Cuningham and Martin need to played in the midfield.
We literally have no specialist small forwards asides from Betts.

Jed Anderson has this to, also younger and OOC

Anderson no doubt has grunt, but makes some of our worst kicks look good.
I think the combination of skill, grunt and winning mentality that Smith brings is what we need.
Even if he could only play 2/3 of games due to load management.
He is almost 32, but has been durable and I think could easily play 2 more years.
Wouldn’t necessarily mind Anderson in the team, but IMO it’s not a choice between the two.

Of the older brigade, I think we need to take the scapal. In pure culture terms I would have kept Kruze and Simmo because they always put in 100% at every contest, but as those two have decided to hang them up, I think we should retire Murph and use Eddie as a mentor (either on the list or under the soft cap if we've got room). let's clear the decks and move them on. We've got our captains for the experienced heads and players like Walsh, Weiters and Ed curnow more than set the tone.
