Thoughts on Isaac Smith to Carlton.
I realise he's 30, but he brings something we really. Outside run and a good ball user.
He also bridges a gap whilst we develop other players.
As he's a UFA, we don't have to trade with Hawthorn.

Would bring him over for sure. Proven player from a successful team.

I likey.

Nothing wrong with a Senior bloke with 2-3 years left to keep the seat warm for our developing players.

Not making any excuses for our season and at best, I'd rate it a 5/10 and feel it may have been closer to a 7/10 had we been a little more resolute.

We have to remember though that for one reason or another, we had next to no input from CCurnow, Marchbank, Newman, Dow, Kreuzer, Kemp JSilvagni and Stocker. It was also the first year back from a long layoffs for Docherty and Williamson.
Just trying to keep some things in perspective, given some obvious disappointment after yesterday game.

I put this year to bed a couple of weeks ago and looking forward to the pre-season already....now just to nail Wiiliams and.....
and Toby Green, Viney, Maynard, young key defender and ruck. And also SOS back for one last trade period. Only can hope.

LOB has been playing 10 a side scratch matches all year. Then he comes into the 1’s and forced to play back pocket due to Doc injury.

Give him a few weeks and don’t pass judgement after 1.

The speed of the game would have been twice as fast to what was in the practice matches
Let's not be so lenient, there has to be some baseline of expectation. He was playing in a nothing game against the bottom side. When will the excuses stop for LOB? Has shown very very little in his entire body of work date. No defensive running and very unreliable disposal.

An emphatic yes from me.

Still playing decent football and brings a few things we desperately need - I would very happily give him a 2 year deal.

Also, his kick for goal was sublime. Great kicking action. We need to give him a bit more time and hopefully he stays in against lions.

Stephenson is out of favour at Collingwood & could be on the trade table. Could we be interested in him as our small forward?
He has the speed and is a good kick for goal, but goes missing for long periods in matches or my liking. Also a bit timid with his attack on the ball.
But has a reasonable strike rate when kicking for goal...

If we put a 'hard line' through his name pre-draft, I doubt his off-field behaviour would have done anything to change that view over the last 3 years.

Clearly not the smartest bloke with his betting scandal and maybe not a 'good bloke'.

From what i've read on Collingwood's board though, essentially he's out of favour because he's not the most professional guy or hardest trainer going around, he goes missing a lot throughout games and doesn't have a big appetite for the defensive stuff...as in he's only really interested in kicking goals.

He's obviously super talented, but seems like the kind of player who coasts on their talent. Not sure i'd be that keen to bring him in.

Sounds an awful lot like Stevie J at 21yo....and Jordan DeGoey....and Dustin Martin...and Christian Petracca.....and quite a few other extreme talents at 21yo.

Yep. Personally i think Dow will make it and i have doubts on O'Brien. Others will have their own opinions.

But people should understand that every week a player was out of the senior side this year was an extra week they got further behind the tempo and match fitness. There have been no reserves matches and no proper training. By the time Dow, Cottrell, Poulsen and O'Brien got given a chance they were pretty much fodder to disappoint.

Imo, we haven't managed our selection well for development this tear and ended up having a nothing year result wise as the "reward" as well. Quite disappointing in that regard.

But in saying that it has been a hard year to manage and it is easy to point the finger.

Next year is judgement year now.

Not a point there I can disagree with, but that doesn't make me, nor you, right.

Given odds though, I'd side with this evaluation. i.e. Next year is judgement year. Absolutely so....and it could cost a coaches position. Yes....it could.

It's funny. I had a look yesterday at the 'pre-agents', and what does the AFL Exchange podcast released today discuss? :)

Lachie Neale was a pre-agent when he left Fremantle for the Lions. Brad Crouch was a pre-agent at the end of last season and clearly wanted out but nobody wanted to give him the contract he was after.

I think it's a pretty reasonable assumption that some of these guys will be exploring their options seriously already, and that talk about them will ramp up over the coming weeks.

Here's the list the AFL released a couple of months back:

https://www.afl.com.au/news/462480/are-these-almost-free-agents-gettable-meet-2020-s-pre-agents-

Adelaide – Matt Crouch, Rory Laird, Brodie Smith
Brisbane – Dayne Zorko
Carlton – Patrick Cripps
Collingwood – Jamie Elliott
Essendon – Orazio Fantasia, Zach Merrett
Geelong – Jake Kolodjashnij, Joel Selwood
Hawthorn – Luke Breust
Gold Coast – Sean Lemmens
Greater Western Sydney – Matt Buntine, Josh Kelly
Melbourne – Max Gawn, Christian Salem
North Melbourne – Luke McDonald, Trent Dumont, Jack Ziebell
Port Adelaide – Robbie Gray
Richmond – David Astbury, Kamdyn McIntosh, Nick Vlastuin
St Kilda – Jack Billings, Luke Dunstan
Sydney – Aliir Aliir, George Hewett, Luke Parker
West Coast – Dom Sheed
Western Bulldogs – Marcus Bontempelli

Some seriously good names in that lot and I can make a genuine case as to why we would or should be interested in just about all of them.

There's a good 10 or so on that list I'd be very keen on. Add one of them and a FA like Williams and it'd be a great off-season IMO.

YES PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Late first/early second probably gets the job done. Will have an immediate impact for us.

Excellent disposal by foot. Genuine leg speed and has the capacity to have a run on the wing, however, we'd probably want to play him as a deep forward.

Would potentially allow Jack Martin to spend more time in the midfield.

If the club makes the call on Simmo, then the same call should absolutely be made on Betts.

Simmo having more impact on games at the moment, but the time is right for the team to move on.

Betts losing his feet, fumbling and dropping marks far more than we'd like. Love his attitude, and no doubt he brings some leadership and organisation to the forward line (though how much has to be in doubt given our performances this year), but the skills have to be up to scratch.

Keep him on in an Indigenous support role, with the capacity to work with the forward line as a part-time assistant coach. But calling time on Simmo while retaining Betts looks far too much like favouritism from the coach.

Both should go along with Kruz and Cas to start with.

A forward line of Charlie, Harry, Gov, Martin, Fisher and Stephenson would be so scary yet exciting.

25 goals one week and a combined 10 touches the next.

I’m not sure we are in the position to take a punt on Stephenson as good as I think he is.

That’s why I liked Owies didn’t seem out of place with The increase in tempo
