A few have mentioned us as being a risk averse club, specifically in respect of not selecting Winder.

It depends how far back one wishes to look, but I think we have been one of the more expansive clubs in this regard, particularly when you consider the tiny margin for error we had to play with during the 'rebuild'. I'd mentioned in another post we have more than a decade's worth of high risk selection, the vast majority of which failed to salute.

Looking at the SOS era Samo was a risky selection over the relative known quantity of local boy Brodie. We went for the high potential upside (and rough edges) of Dow over the more rounded player in Cerra. We've run a high risk trade strategy, trading out some of our best performing players for draft currency, we waded in to live trading earlier and deeper than anyone else. We didn't have a lot of joy with free agency until this year, but not through lack of trying. Gibbons was a huge risk given he had been passed over a dozen or so times by every club.

Whether we have taken the right risks...or the risks people would like to see us take, particularly towards the back end of drafts/rookie lists, is another argument, but hard for anyone to stand behind the statement that we have been risk averse.

Why would one want to court risk when rebuilding, although that Shaw, O'Shea, Mullett trilogy of terror, was even for then......way too safe....and wrong.
Time is ripe for risk now, but we still had holes to fill and that's what we did, via trade and draft.

For me...we're still missing a Betts type....not Betts himself, because Betts isn't quite Betts any more :) but a small, goal-kicking, crumbing type that takes advantages of the spoils in the forward line. I don't quite see that in Durdin, but the sample size is very small.

Re. Winder - Happy to hear what he would have offered us that others we have, can't

I think we have a little. Differentiate the SOS bloc of recruitment (2015-18) with the next bloc of selections, and yes I know SOS was still around last year (2019-20).

SOS was definitely willing to expose the club a bit with his selections. In that bloc of picks, he took (between the draft and trades) 1 KPP for 1 small. He went for smaller, more talented with supposedly higher ceiling with the smalls, which left us a bit bereft when a) they didn't come on as quickly as we'd have liked, and b) 2017 hit us with a ton of bricks and we didn't have the depth to cover the injuries.

The players we've gotten in from 2019-20 have been collateral in case Stocker, LOB, Dow, SPS, Cuningham don't make the grade as AFL midfielders. I'd say that's a bit risk adverse, personally.

2015 draft Weitering 196cm McKay 200cm Curnow 193cm Silvagni 193cm

Would be nice to see Cunningham SPS and Stocker play midfield. They were recruited as mids.

You did see this part of the post:

I'd agree about Cuningham, SPS and Stocker.

41. Carlton - Jack Carrol (our final pick)
52. West Coast - Luke Edwards (West Coast's First pick)
57. West Coast - Isiah Winder

Yes, he does possess a skill set we, and a few other clubs would need, but I would question the 'immediately' argument.

Round 4 and onwards

52. West Coast Eagles - Luke Edwards (general defender, Glenelg)

Fremantle - PASS

Sydney Swans - PASS

Richmond - PASS

53. Essendon - Cody Brand (Key defender, Calder Cannons/Vic Metro) [matched Western Bulldogs’ bid]

54. Fremantle - Joel Western (Small forward/midfielder, Claremont/WA) [matched Western Bulldogs’ bid]

55. Western Bulldogs - Dominic Bedendo (general forward, Murray Bushrangers)

St Kilda - PASS

Brisbane Lions - PASS

56. North Melbourne - Eddie Ford (Midfielder, Western Jets/Vic Metro)

Port Adelaide - PASS

Gold Coast Suns - PASS

Carlton - PASS

Adelaide Crows - PASS

North Melbourne - PASS

57. West Coast Eagles - Isiah Winder (Small forward/midfielder, Peel Thunder/WA)
I think at one point the Eagles were set to only take one player at the draft, so that should speak to the expectations of West Coast, and what transpired.

Eddie Betts is a rookie
There we go, thank you.

That makes me more dismayed with the above, though. Club is clearly pushing the TPP limit, and it's cost us at least one draftee. I know we're front-loading a bit, but the list isn't good enough to warrant us being that constrained.

You are making assumptions on both points

WC were always taking 2 players, but were certainly surprised as to the names

We have more than enough cap space, if anything, delisting out of contract players would have released more cap space, so it had nothing to do with the number of selections at the draft

Betts was put on the rookie list as per the Covid rule that means that $80K of a rookies salary is outside the salary cap. It is not in any way a reflection that we are near the TPP limit. Probably just allows us to front end someone's contract by $160K (bearing in mind Kennedy is the same) to help out with our salary cap down the line. Be silly if we didn't use this "loophole" as did many other teams.

Interstate clubs passed on winder multiple times, could be coincidence of course

I believe that the overwhelming majority of us believe that both Saad & Williams given a relatively injury free run (fingers crossed) would finish top 6 in our B & F.

I think people underestimate how much having this happen will impact on our ladder position. Particularly when we have the cattle that we have. There was a massive thread at the time as to how the Tigers overpaid for Prestia with pick 6 and it bought great mirth to all and sundry. Not sure many are laughing now. Professional players who turn up week in and week out in that age group are just so important. They bring others along for the ride.

Bring on 2021.

One genuine KPF signed for the reserves in Toby Wooler.

One medium defender in Harry Reynolds.

Plus a mix of grunt and pace through the midfield and forward pockets.

Hope to see one more KPP added to ensure our reserves can maintain a proper structure if Levi or Marchy are needed.

Great to see we had a plan and targets and executed flawlessly. Got everything we want. We knew months ago we wouldn't be using pick 8 in the draft and the club planned it to perfection. Wacky draft year, no one knows anything and in another year our kids could have gone in the top 20.

Big win for us and everyone is wrapped

Yikes.....Fisher - gotten worse each season, JSOS hasn't gotten past being a bit player, Charlie can't get fit and setters has gotten better each year.

Fisher and JSOS are the types we need to lift to get better, and lift considerably

To be fair I think JSOS turned a corner in the 2019 pre season where he really upped the anti with his fitness and especially his running and as a result had a very consistent 2019 season and probably showed others like Setters how much a big step up in pre season can set you up for a good year.

His 2020 season was ruined by injury, first with the Merrett back fist knuckle punch to his ribs and subsequently the knee injury that followed, but I think he is one that showed enough with his 2019 pre season and season.

Plowman, Jones, Petrevski Seton
Docherty, Weitering, Saad
Williams, Walsh, Setterfield
Silvagni, Casboult, Martin
Fisher, McKay, Betts
De Koning, Cripps, ECurnow
Murphy, Williamson, Newnes, Fogarty

XXXX, XXXX, Parks
Kemp, Marchbank, Newman
Stocker, O'Brien, Cottrell
Honey, CCurnow, Cuningham
Philp, McGovern, Durdin
Pittonet, Dow, Kennedy
Philp, Carroll, Owies, Ramsay

No Gibbons in either of those teams?

I also think one of Newman or Marchbank gets a spot in the seniors. We are much better off playing at least one of SPS/Willo in the midfield rather than in defence.
