Correct.

To simply judge Betts on his on field performances is unfair, given we know he hasn't just been brought back to add value in that capacity.

I don't believe we would have won many (if any) more games had we had Butler in the forward pocket instead of Betts.

I don't think it's something you can just ignore. It likely constitutes a significant reason why we went for one over the other so it has to be considered, though you're right it is difficult to quantify.

The other thing worth mentioning is money, which would have also been a consideration, but we're not going to know the exact figures.
I suppose the question becomes, who here thinks Butler's goal tally would be the same at Carlton that it is at St Kilda? Would it be worse or better? How much worse or better?

I think it would be worse, but not by much; both Teague and Ratts love the slingshot. I think he'd still have kicked plenty of goals, and that he'd be in decent knick. However, I also do not think it will last, nor would it have lasted if he was with us.

Don’t think we can question what Eddie brings culturally but his last three weeks have been poor. He’s probably played one reasonably game so far this season. His best footy was unbelievable but unfortunately Eddie isn’t taking this club forward. He plays a difficult position which requires repeat speed and effort. It’s evident he’s lost that. Teague needs to put his friendship and emotion aside and do the right thing by the club and play our future eg Philp, Fisher, Dow, Owies etc

Dont think Will Brodie is needed given we have kennedy setters jsos alrdy.

The other 2? Yes pls
If aquiring Brodie adds pressure to those guys mentioned above then it's my belief that the team will be all the better.

JSOS has more of the run with tagging role (eg. Ed Curnow) than the others. His stints in the midfield so far have given the impression the coaches haven't really let him play the inside, hunt the ball style of play.

Will Brodie:
(Below is taken from bigfooty Will Brodie forum)
Only played 8 games last season but finds the ball with ease. Has been working on disposal and defensive efforts, but still not enough to get an opportunity in the seniors since Rd1.

Potential is huge. But no idea if he fulfils it.

Reserves match reports this season

Will Brodie:

Will impacted the game well playing a mix of midfield and forward. He had nine score involvements and looked very dangerous when playing in our forward line. Will is usually very strong at stoppages but was beaten this week inside so will look to focus on this Thursday against the Dogs.

Will Brodie:

Wiz played most of the game as an inside midfielder for us. He won some good balls around the contest but was inconsistent at stoppages due to body work and handball execution. Will sets a high standard for himself so will be wanting to have more of an impact in this area on the weekend.

Will Brodie:

Will had another solid game this weekend as an inside midfielder and is winning the ball well at stoppages. He’s been working hard on the defensive aspect of his game and it was pleasing to see a few examples of excellent defensive work-rate from Will. This will need to remain a strong focus to push for senior selection.

Will Brodie:

Will played as an inside mid and continues to have a positive impact at stoppages. He was strong offensively and help set up seven scoring shots. Will continues to play with strong defensive intent and needs to be consistent with this to earn an AFL recall.

I think Brodie has the potential to be as good as Setterfield.

Depends on how they rate Kennedy internally, remembering Brodie doesn’t have the same versatility and will most likely cost more in salary.

All for improving the list wherever we can but would look to fill other needs first.

Been a fair while since i have posted anything and just wanted to say how happy i am with the current team as a whole albeit a few games which is understandable from a team that finished bottom 3 last year. Been some terrific moments and some horrible ones so jusy need to work on consistency in effort and hardness at the ball as well as our efficiency by foot.
When we are tackling well we normally win

Having said that, a team can always improve and I would like to see us make a play for 3 players in this seasons trade period.

Tom Papley - bull forward who can play well through the midfield and hold his own. Maybe used in tandem with Martin and Gibbons.
Cost: 2 x firsts and a second coming back
(High price but similar to that of Brad Hill)

Will Brodie - inside midfielder who seems out of favour and not in the best 22 even with Rowell being injured. Not speedy but not slow and could give good service alongside Cripps, Kennedy & Setterfield.
Cost: a late second or early third

Jack Petruccelle - small zippy forward who needs a lot of work developing his game. Who better than Eddie to help him improve and take his game to a new level. He would be able to release Martin, Gibbons and even Papley to rotate through the midfield without effecting our structures.
Cost: 3rd or early 4th rounder.

Thoughts?
Is will brodie a good kick?

Will Teague look at Adelaide for a few bargains?

He’d be thinking he could get the best out of a Laird, Smith, MCrouch etc. Proven footballers in some horrible form.

Wouldn’t mind taking a punt on one at the right price. Teague would know best. Laird my pick of the bunch.

TEAGUE should prioritise players from winning cultures

Brodie would need to understand where he fits in the scheme of things on the AFL pay scale, and that the gig is up from the pay overs to keep you @ GCFC days is he wants to play regular games.

Kennedy is poor off the boot & was brought across to midfield. He was more damaging as a forward at GWS & that’s showing up here as well. We need strength through the midfield, though some class for the receivers & kicking skills on the outside required.

I would take Smith. He can play HB, wing or onball. But he's a bit older.

Probably would have a benefit. Fair assessment.

But in terms of priorities I dont think another big body mid who is perhaps marginally better than kennedy is one.

Bringing in Jeremy Cameron would put more pressure on Charlie McKay McGovern and Cas too - but obviously no one would even think of doing this.

Moving from pillaging GWS's stocks, to the Crows.

Watching Cerra and Brayshaw do really well...as well as Rayner start to pickup this year has been heartening.

Think both Dow and LOB will be good players. Just needed a bit more time.

Hopefully the 2017 wasnt a bad year, just the players needed tume.
That draft year just seem to be finding their feet after a very slow start. Coffield and Clark also looking the goods atm.

Lets hope not.
Perryman and Caldwell another good game. 20 and 15 disposals. Both at 80% DE.
Really bloody strange side GWS. All their best players and best ball users got a ton of the ball and looked like their midfield absolutely dominated yet they can only manage to generate one more scoring shot then GWS.
If they don’t win it this year it wouldn’t surprise me if they make some really big moves.

Agree.
Something isn't right there

Paddy will always be compared to Cerra, especially around here. He is who I and many wanted.

I think Paddy had the highest ceiling of the players available. Can see the method behind the pick but he always had a bit of boom or bust about him. Still only a 3rd year player.

Much more confident in LOB who seems only size and strength away from holding down a spot.

There was very little splitting Dow, Cerra and LDU in that draft. The actual draft order could have unfolded in many ways.

For that draft, the top 4-5 picks appeared to be more about need. We needed pace so Dow was the best fit.

I think a lot on here would have had LDU ahead of Cerra too. In saying that, Cerra had his fans on here, but I don't think there were as many as there were LDU fans.

Still too early to call, especially as Dow has had a few injuries of late. Just needs to get a solid run at it.

It’s very easy to forget just how young these guys are.

One Jacob Weitering was running around in the 2s struggling to find a kick as recently as 2018.

Paddy deserves the same time. He definitely has it in him. SOS doesn’t pick spuds :p
