Were our expectations to play Simpson, Murphy and Betts week in week out?

Especially on current form, I wouldnt be oppose to Betts being managed this week.

Surely you think you have an idea of where we are at or which area needs work? I know you have been big on the fact we have recruited a lot of mids and how they all fit, but what about other areas? Small forward and small defenders? We haven’t drafted many and the ones we do have a cat B and rookie selection players. Does that mean, we will just be more selective come trade time, quality over quantity?

The club may well have an idea and as much as I put forward the seemingly obvious needs...which coincidently is exactly what Liddle put forward....I'm just not sure the way I may have been in previous years.
The main point for the CFC is not so much what we may have in the future but for what we need right now and whoever misses out thereafter - bad luck.

Go through the list and we'll find that it's unlikely that all our first rounders post 2015, who happen to be midfielders, can co-exist.
Since 2016 we've drafted/recruited - Setterfield, Kennedy, SPS, Fisher (just out of first round), Dow, O'Brien, Walsh, Stocker, Kemp and Philp.
That's a lot of emphasis in one part of he ground and I know we can turn this into that.....but it just doesn't play out that way as much as we'd want it to.

It's also why I'm adamant that you cannot simply recruit for talent but for needs. Sometimes the need should take precedence over the talent.

Think we need to land a top level centerman. I just feel we have a lot of reasonable players in there but probably lack that player who has burst, hardness and is a big impact player. A lot of the top sides and sides who are just average but overachieve have a player or two like that in their side. We have Cripps who is a great grunt player but we need that damaging mid. Yes we need a top level small forward with a complete game too.

I don't think taking from the middle shelf is going to get us far. Fringe players at other clubs are probably going to be fringe players at Carlton, we just have a lot of that level of player who aren't really cemented solidly in our best 22.

I can't see money being an issue. We could easily shift Kreuzer, Murphy and/or Simpson's salary off our books without it being much of a hit plus it's been rumoured that we already have an open salary cap.

I would expect us to be very accurate. I'm just not confident the players we need will be available. With new people in charge and some good resources to get players it will be interesting to see what comes about.

Would be happy to trade early draft picks and some players. I feel early picks will have good value this year but the rest will be much of a muchness, a real lottery.

Case against would be if we're replacing Cunners (inj) with one of Owies or Honey. Might be best to introduce one of those two along side Eddie rather than both at once.

18.20 - 20.20 is where it's at and in particular;

"If we're going to make big investments, we need to be clear that they're the right investments and that we don't have the answers to some of those questions sitting right under our nose.
We have to understand what we have on the list"

All that needs to be said and again - It may sound easy enough but it's not.

Might also be setting some groundwork for negotiations and/or public perception... We're happy to go after insert-player(s)-here but we're also not so desperate as to pay way overs or sell the farm as we're stacked with young talent.

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Excellent post.
I was initially puzzled at the comments, as to my untrained eye I’m not certain we have the natural improvers in all areas of the ground from the VFL side.
But you make a great point re the negotiation side of list management. What point would it serve for Liddle to come out and say “We are dead set on recruiting a ready made (insert position here) this offseason...” as it immediately lessens our hand at the trade table.
Best to portray ambivalence at this stage and pounce when the opportunity arises.

Don't read too much into this as a negotiation tactic.
It is more what you hint at in your first para and also what HARKER has been saying....we don't really know right now what we have. Or more relevantly, we don't know what we will have in one or two seasons time.

The comments around moving forward might be true and still involving Papley, he hasn't actually ruled it out, more or less just saying we're not dwelling on the past and are looking forward.

I'd definitely be in discussions with restricted free agents Williams and Viney. Share your sentiments around Crouch and Viney, while Wines is kind of a different conversation as we'd have to trade for him. While all three are inside mids, Viney is the one I'd describe as 'combative', which is something that we don't really have at the moment (aside from perhaps Stocker in time).
I interpreted liddle's comments as Papley is improbable

It is so tricky when it comes to players like Murphy, Simmo and Kruzer. All three have stuck with the club. But in all honesty I think what happened to Daisy was simpler as he was a two club player and you could argue he was better or equal to all 3 performance wise in his last season.

Unfortunately players can't perform forever. In reality I would ask the question if we let all 3 go at year end would they likely be given a chance at another club considering age and performance? If the answer is no you have to move on.

I think it is simple with murph, kreuzer and simmo. Better a year earlier than later. 2 or 3 of murph, kreuz betts and simmo should retire. Reduced list sizes and the fact that our ceo just highlighted 6 players whose performance can not be guaged for lack of opportunity should dictate the retirements.

Draft talent, trade needs

Wouldn’t have thought so. Liddle had every chance to rule it out and recent reports from Sam McLure (who gets regular leaks from Carlton) are that we will be going hard for Papley again.

Longmire and the jokers at Sydney are just very touchy and sensitive about anyone commenting on their players. Have to play by their stupid rules if we want Papley.

In the most but to adopt this stance without taking particular circumstances into account.....is silly. It really is and I've shown you this many times over.

You have shown me nothing

1st and 2nd rounders are purely best available, from there it depends if there are sliders, mature age types for depth, raw prospects and maybe needs

If Honey comes on, we don't need Papley.
If Dow comes on, we don't need Crouch.
If O'brien comes on, we don't need Kelly.
If Stocker comes on, we don't need Viney.
If Kennedy comes on, we don't need Wines.
