People banging on about SPS being played out of position and needing to go in the middle can any of you tell me apart the doggies game last year where he dominated or played well regularly in that position? If not I suggest we move on from the discussion and realise he just might not be as good as we hoped he would be.
Round 7, 2017 against Collingwood. That was - in some ways - a better performance from fewer possessions. Made kicks and hit handpasses that no-one should be able to find a target. Clearly best afield. He's played other games in similar fashion, but none quite so good.

You're welcome to your opinion, but it's wrong.

What's he responsible for
“ https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/557640/carlton-welcomes-austin-as-head-of-list-management” said:
Austin arrives at Ikon Park from the Whitten Oval, where he had two stints (2006-2008 and 2018–present), most recently as the Bulldogs’ National Recruiting Manager.

In between his time at the Dogs, Austin played a pivotal role in building the Richmond premiership list as the Tigers’ List Management and Recruiting Officer from 2012-2018.

He was also the recruiting officer and opposition analyst at Port Adelaide from 2009-2011.
If you want can look up the players the dogs got between 06-08 and 18-19, the Tigers 12-18 and Port 09-11.

I’m not sure exactly who he’s ‘responsible’ for landing, how much was done by others at the club, etc. but that’s where he was before landing at Carlton.

I think the worry is for a guy like Fish...Teague said in his pre-game last week that Fish wasn't happy being told he would be played as a forward...whilst he also said that he turned that attitude around, if Fish genuinely wants to be a mid, and we don't want him as a mid, there will be a number of clubs that would promise him his desired positional change I would have thought...

But you are right that we have bigger fish to fry (pun intended)...
This is exactly what I was thinking when heard it from Teague

Hypothetical for you all.
When it looked that we may finish just out of the 8 and therefore end up with pick 8-10, I was all for trading that pick for an established player in a position of need.
A lot would have to go right for us to finish there, so there’s every chance we end up with a top 5 pick.
My question is: should that change our willingness to trade the pick? Not sure about mock drafts with no junior footy being played, so there may not be a Rowell/Walsh in there. I also know the draft is compromised with Academy/father-son selections.
But it’s an interesting dilemma.

Papley is an out an out star of the league. We just have to get him! Mere stats do not show his impact on games. His presence, follow work, pressure etc has destroyed GWS tonight. Unlucky not to have 3 goals.

If I have to watch him tear it up play for another team over the next ten years knowing that we missed our chance.... it will feel like Eddie Betts or Josh Kennedy all over again

What I reckon right now

Delist
Lang, Finbar, Goddard Polson Moore

Retire
Simmo

That’s even before Eddie and Kruz work out what they want to do

Murphy will get another year

6-8 minimum changes

Sounds reasonable.

If list sizes reduce, 6-8 delistings/retirements will probably allow us to bring in 1 player via trade and 2-3 through the draft.

My favourite rampaging sainter nut job Facebook page has said we are interested with Collingwood youngster Nathan Murphy. Anyone know much about him?

Can play. He's your 3rd tall. Knows how to find the goals. Well at least he did as a junior.

He's versatile too. Can play both ends of the ground.

Would be a great get, but Not sure Collingwood would want to let him go though.

Why?

He's not our player. The opportunity may well have passed us. He clearly still wants to come back to Victoria; there is but a single reason Sydney are trying to direct every single entry they have through a small forward, regardless of his skill level.

This isn't a situation in which we don't know what we had until it left, because he was never ours to begin with. There is no sliding doors here.

So when are we getting a draft thread? Surely we need one to start learning the names of possible inclusions. Might be hard to find footage of underage players but it would be good to know the small/medium forwards available and where they were projected to go.

Whos Murphy from Collingwood? Has anyone seen him play, what position?

Just read, he’s a third tall, not sure how that suits us, but we will see.

This years 1st and a 3rd will get it done. Papley and Sydney would have had a discussion last year after the trade didn't go through. Papley is an ultimate professional in 2020 and Sydney will release him from his contract. A pick 4-6 plus a 3rd is sufficient

Don't think so.

We will cough up 2 x first round selections if Papley comes to us.

Some will probably cringe a little, but we'll just have to move on with it.

On a side note, get pumped if the rumour around Nathan Murphy is true. He's got some serious talent. To be honest, I'd be more excited about Murphy than Papley. His upside is enormous.

Two first rounder, one of those being top 10 or top 10 and a player. They'd be mad to let him go for anything less when he's contracted till 2023.

If it was 1st and a 3rd, do that in a heartbeat, don't expect miracles from him in Navy Blue if it was possible, 30-40 goals would be very very nice.

Desperately need a highly skilled small to get those crumbs.

I'm not confident we'll get him, but I desperately hope Papley is doing for the Swans what Gibbs did for us.

Request a trade, return to the club and put in a career year, and then request a trade again at the end of the season.

i don’t really like this comparison haha

This is dumb.

Here are some players, their height and their weight:

Dion Prestia: 175cm, 82kg.
Trent Cotchin: 182cm, 86cm
Jack Viney: 178cm, 84kg
Tim Kelly: 182cm, 81kg
Josh P. Kennedy: 189cm, 97kg
Steele Sidebottom: 184cm, 85kg
Luke Shuey: 183cm, 90kg
Taylor Adams:181cm, 83kg
Shaun Burgoyne: 186cm, 89kg
Dylan Shiel: 182cm, 83kg

SPS is 182cm, and 78kg. He has spent his entire ******* career except for right ******* now as a midfielder. He was recruited as a midfielder, has played exceptional games at AFL level as a midfielder.

So, what is the key difference you're seeing here? It's pretty ******* clear: all of these older, more established midfielders are much, much heavier. Viney is 4cm shorter, and 6 kg heavier. Shuey is a cm taller, and is 12kg heavier. The question becomes, why is this so? Is it merely the effects of time?

Harry Perryman: 184cm, 80kg
Oliver Florent: 185cm, 81kg
Jack Bowes: 187cm, 85kg
Will Brodie: 189cm, 89kg
Jack Scrimshaw: 193cm, 88kg
Tim Taranto: 187cm, 87kg
Will Setterfield: 192cm, 87kg

These are the midfielders from the same draft. Some have only played as flankers to this point, some have taken their place as full time mids; what's the difference, you ask? The players who have taken on full time midfielder roles - Taranto, Brodie, Florent - have achieved AFL midfielder weight ranges. SPS hasn't.

We knew this was an issue, given we went for no taller/bulkier mids other than Matt Kennedy (190cm, 88kg) and Setterfield, and it's only very recently those players have started demonstrating their quality. There's also the fact ably demonstrated by GWS that when you cause players to bulk up quickly, you get soft tissue injuries; I'd be interested in hearing from someone with expertise in this area, as I am not an expert and could be confusing correlation with causation.

SPS can tackle, and he can find his own ball. He is an AFL quality first or second ring midfielder; someone who can get their own ball, but is just as useful on the fringes of a stoppage to either receive the ball or to distribute it. What we need from him is for him to put on some more muscle to allow him to get stronger, and for Teague to move him back into the midfield, either in the seconds or in the ones; I do not care which.

You forgot to mention he lacks half the effort & intensity of all of the players you mentioned. DangerousD's follow up is spot on, as he addresses that though also points out he has only put on 2kgs in 4 years. That isn't going to cut it, he gets bullied when he goes up against bigger bodies.

Sooner you accept it, sooner you'll be able to move on. I did, I feel much better.

I think they're angling to try and sell him to the highest bidding Melbourne club, of which we are only one. Think about how he'd sit in Geelong's forward half, WB's forward half.

I think the clubs that either couldn't get him or wouldn't be interested would be Richmond, St Kilda, Essendon and Collingwood. WB need literally anyone who can kick a goal; our interest is plain; Geelong need young talent before the music stops, and so do Hawthorn. I don't think he'd go to Nth, but if they offered him a million a year across six years and offered Sydney 2 firsts, they'd both be mad not to take it.

I think this is very much a case of buyer beware here; not because he's not that good, but because getting him is going to hurt.
