Wasn't there further issues with getting the teams & staff into WA as McGowan was holding strong on their border restrictions?
Yes, as well as WA continuing essentially the strictest border control in the world until they win their next election in March.

I really hope the AFL do provide list sizes ASAP. Say they do reduce by 5, would be really good to see the players on the fringe get a game to earn a spot.

Any reduction to the list size could mean in the ballpark of 10 changes at season end when you factor in the draft.
38 + 2 seems most likely. Cuts a coming and some decent talent will miss AFL lists around the place.

Realistically the total number of AFL contracts will be the same as what it was in 2010.

18 clubs by 5 less players is 90.

Gold Coast and Giants at 45 each is 90.

I'd personally like, 38 + 2. But with tighter parameters around the Rookies. Ie. Less than 10 games played.
Then an extra 41st list spot for a veteran. A 250 game clubman as a reward for loyalty.

I think I’d be okay with Dow not having acceptable endurance yet if I still saw him chasing hard.

I made a point of watching him a few times last Thursday. He jogs everywhere. When his man leaves a contest, he jogs behind not trying to catch up. When his man leads he stays in the middle filling a “hole” while his man gets the footy.

If you blow up because you’re exhausted, fine you gave your all. But he looks like he’s not even trying defensively, and it’s a problem that needs quick fixing

Just get rid of the rookie list rather than having rookies with weird caveats like can’t play more than 10 or can only play if someone moves to the LTI list.

3 - Dow
4 - LDu
5- Cerra
6 - Stephenson
7 - Hunter Clark
8 - Coffield
9 - Naughton
10 - Lachie O'brien

I remember this draft, and being super keen on LDU who is probably ended up a bigger bust than Dow.. With the exception of Naughton, none of these players are setting the world on fire.. and with McKay & Charlie Curnow its understandable why we didnt take Naughton.. I just think this is a pretty ordinary draft year and Paddy is being unfairly judged based on draft position.

FWIW i would give him a role to play in the midfield every game for the rest of the year, and if he comes on excellent and if he doesnt we cut our losses and look for another opportunity for him, we should be able to get an early second round pick, or potentially say Geelongs first for a swap of our 2nd, which might help us land Papley or Williams.
we had pick 28 in that draft [Matthew Kennedy] Liam Ryan would have been perfect for that pick ; Sam Taylor & Noah Balta also there for Pick 28 instead of the Kennedy waste

For an even more fun time, go back and look at our 2000 to 2010 pick compared to who was available. We could have three- pleeted a three-Pete!

Unfortunately the 2021 List Size Cuts are going to leave little room for sentiment...

I think Murphy gets a 1 year deal.
Retire Betts, Kreuzer and Simpson.

Delist... Finbar? B.Silvagni? Polson? (has he done enough to hold on? Goddard?

The only issue is a 2 year deal would be a lot for some of the lesser 18 year olds.

Yeah, draw the line for 2 year contracts in at some point in the draft.
3rd round, 4th round?
No need for different tiers on the list beyond that. The rookie list now just means a salary cap discount and an initial 1 year commitment, it is not what it was brought in for.

I’d like the rookie list to remain and for clubs to be able to fill it out with as many players as they can afford. Would give lower clubs a free hit at 2-3 extra kids instead of overpaying average players to scrape the minimum.

I think a 38/2/CATB set up is most likely. The Suns have a list of around 50 and 40 odd contracted players so it may prove some difficulty.

Suns have a free hit based on their concessions. Despite COVID, they would challenge the AFL if they chose to reduce the concessions in any way. Therefore they are an anomaly in 2021. 38 and 2 will test the depth of some in an effort to support a reggies side, depending upon what that looks like.

There was a really frustrating passage in the 1st quarter where Jacob Hopper beat him in a 1v1. Hopper got the footy ran about 10 metres while Dow jogged behind. He kicked it to the wing/HF then chased his kick and got the handball receive. Dow hadn't moved more than 15 metres from where he lost the initial contest.

I wasn't aware Dow has suggested he is home sick. When did that occur?
Why be so condecending? It is an absolute valid comment. There was a lot more to it than your so called home sickness. But I forgot, you're in the inner sanctum of the Lions, so you must know what you're talking about and that gives you the right to be a condecending

In an alternate universe, Dow is drafted to GWS at pick 3. Averages 14 and 17 touches in his first two years before being sent forward and then to the two's in the following year as he can't crack the 22. But he has shown glimpses of explosive pace, contested work and a side-step to match. This board is probably pleading to throw our first rounder at him. Grass is always greener.

Understand it has been a poor year, but the injuries haven't helped fitness wise. Needs time to develop and he should either be in the midfield or in the two's, he's not a forward. Would be irresponsible to trade at his lowest value.

Yeah there was definitely more to Schache leaving than just home sickness... How about the fact that he's just not performing well enough? Hasn't shown much at the Dogs this year either. Still he could come good, but nowhere near the best forward of that draft at this stage.

I agree with this. Atm I think it’s mostly frustration talking seeing nearly all the top ten this year show very good improvement or atleast someone like Stephenson has played to a really high level already. Even LDU who along with Dow and LOB has been the least impressive had his best game on the weekend and was Norths best player. In a year like this though you don’t go giving away players like Dow for a packet of chips.

In saying that I don’t have an issue at all with people writing him off. I follow the draft and always have a fairly strong opinion on that (though I have learnt to not be so matter of fact now days) if I’m going to have an opinion on a 17-18 year old then I don’t mind people having them on a third year player with ten times the insight we had before they were drafted.

Diesel on morning radio saying dow needs to play like a Man go in harder. Teaguey doing the right thing making him earn games. Also said wasn’t desperate enough. Said jobe watson And josh kennedy early in their careers were told the same thing. Also said sometimes you do that in one game and off you go. Let’s hope we get diesel in for a chat to young dow. Reality check for the young boys drafted you only play if you earn it. He has been really bad this year.
i mean we have Richmond ppl coming in here thinking they have a chance of developing him and getting him cheap. I remember the days they took ben lenon in front of cripps 😎.
Hope dow gets his finger outta his arse and starts bashing and crashing.

Not condescending, and I am not in any inner sanctum nor have I ever suggested otherwise.

What more was there to it? I recall there may have been mental health issues. You seem to know so please, do tell.

Sounds like Caldwell!
