Still enjoying this fascination with Papley

Now we are leaning on, if Papley was in a better side, his output would be better. That can be true to some extent, but it is minimal and certainly doesn't change his value, which it seems has gone down to a more realistic value

Couple of weeks ago, Taberner and Dixon were averaging the same number of goals, yet, Dockers were averaging 11 less inside 50's

Does that mean Taberner would kick more goals in a better side and or is worth more than a Dixon? Clearly not

Reality is starting to kick in, Papley is worth +/- a mid first only

Interesting part, he still isn't the best valued and or most versatile small forward

I'm still keen on Papley, but at the right price. I'm happy to pay, but not sell the farm.
He brings so much to the table that we lack, and he'd have an immediate impact on our footy club.

Papley is an agitator and gets his way under the skin of opponents.
Gibbons is similar in this way but doesn't have the weapons to back his mouth.

For me at least, I see Papley adding a lot more to the whole, than just being a target in our forward line.
He'd be someone who'd put others off their game. Think he'd make for a good ally alongside McKay, McGovern and Martin. Pretty confident of that.

I understand especially that he requested a trade to us, but I hope our list management aren't so focused again on one player and then we miss on a Butler type

The pick was always available at our discretion.

Have a look at the footage. Adelaide were trying to force the trade upon us.

Once again, refer to the example above regarding Harry and Charlie as to why you might switch the order in which you draft with a pair of picks in a tight range.

I love watching this footage with SOS.

Wouldn't go that far, he'd still have been awesome for us, Cameron has just decided to play him forward for part of the year and has thrown everything out of whack.

If it’s that fair enough. Maybe there are just players from other teams that are in form slumps, like our own captain, because of the nature of season. It can’t be easy to be away from home for so long and playing games on shorter than usual breaks. I reckon if the season returns to normal in 2021, so will the form of a lot of these guys around the competition.

Why is there an assumption that we would have taken Duursma? For all we know we could’ve rated McHenry or Collier-Dawkins higher. The only thing we do know is that we rated Stocker at 6.

The mental gymnastics are just that, mental.

If you watch the vision we clearly wanted Stocker. Had we wanted Duursma we wouldn't have done the deal with Adelaide.

How does Papley compare to De Goey in terms of fulfilling our strategic needs?

I reckon if Grant Birchall reaches his trigger for an extra year then one Alex Witherden will be very very gettable for an up and coming young side, in case anyone knows of one. 😁

I thought I read somewhere that Birchall has reached his trigger for next year.

His bow and arrow celebration is 100% pure unadulterated cringe. I know he's handy, but watching him pull that contrived garbage in navy blue would have killed me.

Stephen Coniglio has been dropped. Bullet dodged confirmed.

Just shows the importance of internal growth and development at a football club.

You can't rely on one player to be the messiah.

At 49 I feel like my soul just left my body.

To summarise, you think that Carlton should do the right thing by Paddy Dow by trading him (at the low) to another club so that he can go on and become the superstar that fate has always promised him to be.

FMD

Here’s a plan B:
Lock him into a five year contract on minimum wage and make him cut up the oranges every week. Recruit Tommy Raudonikis (NRL) to be his life coach if and until he HsTFU.

My post was looking at the situation from Dow or Dow's manager's perspective, not our clubs. Saying that it may be in HIS best interest to seek a trade away from the club for a chance to fulfil his potential.

Your suggestion about locking him into another five year deal would only breed further complacency and lack of urgency. If he can't harden the f up under Diesel as a specialist coach for 2 years, i dont see it happening at our club. Let's be honest, right now, his mentality and lack of intensity does not make him an AFL standard footballer, and until that changes, he won't be. He has played 42 games, he should know what intensity is required.

Which leads me to my point, I believe he needs a change of club and environment to force that learning curve and maturation. Get him out of his comfort zone he is sitting in at the Blues. So from a Carlton perspective trading him would mean getting value while we can, whilst Paddy can go on and try to restart his career.

Again, looking at it from Dow's perspective it would be better for him to recognise this before he is 26 like Jack Watts when he moved to Port.

Tim Kelly's issues weren't around not being able to play the game, nor not being elite

He couldn't kick for sh*t.
Missed many many targets.
Gets an AFL opportunity and in the space of a preseason turned it around.
Watch many WAFL games.
You'd think 'How the hell is this guy not playing AFL?'
see him kick
'That's why'

If Kelly can come good, then I am hoping Dow can.

Difference is Kelly went into an elite system that is renowned for turning players around.
We are not Geelong.

I know I said earlier about his form mirroring probably a lot of players this year but for $1M this year alone, getting to the point where he’s been dropped isn’t a very good look and it must be worrying for their supporters and the club as a whole that this could be Coniglio moving forward.

GSW would want this contract to work out otherwise they will have a Sydney situation on their hands. Lance Franklin played 10 games last year, 0 this year and he’s getting $2.5M for the next 2 years. I’d be worried giving anyone $1M a year let alone for 7 years when they’re 26 to begin with in the case of Coniglio.

GWS have shot themselves in the foot and i love it. His heart isn't in Sydney and the captaincy doesn't sit well with him. 2 big mistakes have left them and now him vulnerable.

People will say the same thing about us if we offer the big bucks to Papley.

They'll say we shot ourselves in the foot twice.

The first time being McGovern. The second time being Papley.

So we should just give up. Why bother?
No. But how long do we persist?
Trade him out while he could net us something? or hang on to him and take the risk only to trade him for nothing or delist him?

EDIT: If trading him out meant we could get a pick to acquire a proven player, would you not do the deal?

Correct alfo, basically saying if Geelong can turn around a 23 (?) y.o player that 'at times' could not hit the side of a barn in one preseason, then surly we can turn Dow 20 y.o around in 2-3 preseasons.
If no improvement at all by end of next, then maybe he is a bust??

We've got picks to trade to bring in players.
There is absolutely no need to trade out our young talent.

I wonder if Sydney are asking the same question about Papley given his recent form slump.
