If the season doesn't go ahead, there will be one positive to come out of it.

Draft picks could potentially be awarded based on the 2019 ladder.

That would give us picks 3 and 22 (pushed back one due to pick 11 compo) in the first and second rounds.

Those two picks would be sufficient to get just about any trade across the line.

Youd back the recruiters to go to the draft with 3 and then back us to move up in 2021 and offer up our future first in 2021. Thats the dream right there.

Dont know if it would happen like that though. Although the afl would be happy to give gcs' pick 1, so maybe they do run it that way.

Plus which kid is worth pick 3? Not sure we will get to see them play from here on to prove themselves.

3. Draft
22. Trade
Future 1st. Papley
FA Zac Williams

Two players we should really go hard to recruit at the end of the year are:

1. Jackson Hately - We need to make this young man priority number 1 as he is exactly what we need in the middle to pair up with Cripps and Walsh in the future, have a look at his stats in the 2 Marsh series games for GWS he is a beast and a ball magnet that can use the ball, win clearances and deliver the ball inside 50, looks to be ahead of Caldwell in terms of development so I would prioritise him first, GWS just added Tom Green as an inside mid pushing Hately further down the list once again, even with the Taranto injury he probably won’t get the opportunities that he deserves and just to prove me right they played Green ahead of him in Rd1 which is exactly my point, we can offer him game time at the top level in spades and seriously who wouldn’t jump at the chance to team up with Cripps and Walsh for the next 10 years. Plus it wouldn’t be a Carlton premiership team without an elite SA in it.

2. Isaac Cumming - Elite ball user with pace and a huge leap mainly plays across half back but again his opportunities are limited although increasing, GWS just recruited Lachie Ash who plays the same position with very similar attributes except he doesn’t have the leap of Cummings, he might take opportunities away from Cummings leading to us being able to steal him away, could play wing as he has improved his endurance since being drafted and as mentioned is a great ball user with speed just what the doctor ordered for us, or he takes over from SPS, so he can go back in the middle where he belongs, and becomes Simmo’s long term replacement down back.

I think we should still keep a close eye on Caldwell as he has some great attributes as well but Hately should be our priority as a mid to help Cripps, another to keep an eye on is Xavier Ohalloran although he’s not a priority.

GWS still have a plethora of great young players that are being developed in the NEAFL and are ripe for the picking and are all in a great age range to come in and really boost our development by having an immediate impact, if we could snare Hately and Cummings it would straight away make our side better and solve a lot of our immediate midfield problems especially Hately who is cherry ripe to burst onto the scene.

We can’t sit on our hands waiting for Dow, Fish and Setterfield to step up and Philp and Kemp need time to develop we need to be proactive and outside of getting the ever illusive A-Grade midfielder in the trade period this is what we need to do to move us up the ladder in a more timely manner.

Sos has gone Murph, from now on we'll be getting our players from Richmond.;)

Unless the initials are DM I’m not interested, seriously though the above mentioned aged players are what we need to get the team moving in the right direction, don’t care if they come from the Cubbadubba Rubber Ducks reserves team as long as they are good ball users preferably with some pace as well. 👍🏽🤪

Agree re Hately and Cumming. Both would fit nicely into our list. If they came on the cheap, it would be a no brainer.

Still need 2-3 senior players come through the door at the end of the year as we will see a few more disappear from our list. But a couple of talented kids would be nice also.

Based on the preseason games and round 1, we definitely need another mature aged mid.

In saying that, I'm really hoping that some of the younger guys in Philp, Ramsay, Dow, O'brien and Setterfield use this time to fill out their frames.

Would make us an entirely different outfit.

I agree on the senior player need but don’t mistake Hately for a Dow, Setters or the like as he has the ability to come straight in and produce the sort of numbers we would normally associate with a more mature talent, and although he is effectively 3 years younger than Setters he is more developed, hence the want on my part, he also has the size to compete as well being 190cm and is listed as 83 kg although I suspect he is slightly heavier than that now, take a look at his output in his 2 most recent games in the Marsh series as they are the sort of numbers we where all hoping to see from Setters in the Marsh series games but he failed to deliver anything near it.

GAME 1
D K. HB. CP. DE%. M. T. GB
25 10. 15. 11. 96%. 5. 2. 1.0

CLR. CC. I-50. GA. TOG
8. 3. 4. 3. 76%

GAME 2
D K. HB. CP. DE%. M. T. GB
29. 11. 18. 9. 82%. 6 0. 1.0

CLR. CC. I-50. GA. TOG
5. 2. 2. 1. 72%

As you can see the stats are impressive especially the DE% which would be a nice change for us, he is also a very good mark so we could actually rotate him and Cripps between forward and midfield without the massive drop off we currently have when Cripps rotates forward.

The gap between the the good and bad games with Setterfield is way too large at the moment. Important he can work his way into games if he's started slowly. Hopefully he uses this enforced break effectively.

Admittedly Setters has only played a full season since his acl injury which going off past players it usually takes a good 12 months of playing to get back to anywhere near your best, considering that he was still developing his game when it happened this almost certainly adds to the time it would take, it’s just disappointing when he puts in the sort of performances he has so far this year in the Marsh series and then Rd1, we were all expecting him to really take the next step and start to effect games from the midfield.

I just hope when next we see Will he puts in at least the effort we all expect from players that pull on the jumper as so far this year his effort has been abysmal.

2020 Jack Martin
Wait 1 game...
2021 Tom Papley & Ollie Wines
Just cannot warm to Wines. Probably 750k plus and will want 4 or so years. Not to mention Port will want a top 5 pick for him or 2 top 15 picks.

If we end up with a top 5 pick, just hit the draft. Use next years 1st on Papley, use our 2nd to try for Hately/Cumming. Or sort a package deal to get them both.

Ill throw up if we go after Wines

Rumours that AFL will cut list sizes back to 35 will make list management interesting- instant higher value for developed players a heap more pressure on young players to hit their stride fast or out. Value of draft picks goes down - a lot. Also wondering what effect that the legal validity of any player contract is now- if they are forced to take pay cuts....lots more incentive for Clubs to cheat salary cap system too ..oh wait....that never happens.

Just some random look forward thoughts.

It seems a bit unusual. Why? This crisis has wiped out this AFL season -most likely completely, but only a huge pessimist would anticipate that next years season would be affected. So what good would a reduction in list sizes do next year/ Unless it is the AFL using this as an excuse to make changes that they have been thinking about for a long time.

Some good food for thought JaB.
Off the top of my head, I would have thought that with reduced list numbers, the value of high draft picks would increase, if you could only add say an additional 1 or 2 to your list. After that, the value of lower draft picks....even 2nd rounders...could go down considerably, as there'd be little opportunity to develop the Finbars and BSos's of the world.
Speculative and rookie picks would be gaaaawn!!

I'm not a buyer of the "use it as an excuse to make changes" thought although I wouldn't be surprised - because it is going to be really hard for Cubs to field VFL sides and develop players....I think losing a year's revenue isn't the alpha and omega of the situation either - but it is all speculation I am not familiar with contractual terms let alone any fine print ....the other thing to consider is that we are guessing about the duration around controls regarding social contact and workplace arrangements...I think we have to assume that until a vaccine becomes available OR a preventative regime as being explored via the malaria drug - situation today is situation normal and season 2020 as well as 2021 gets wiped.

I reckon unless teh kid(s) are absolute guns the first rounders become worth second rounders and the rest become worth not much.

We don't need more midfielders right now, unless we can acquire a genuine star of the competition: we need to take a serious crack at developing what we have, and we probably need a better midfield and stoppage coaching setup to accomplish this.

We do need to look into key defensive, small defensive, small forward and ruck options to develop, however.

To highlight this, here's my guess at a depth chart, including where I see things falling with delistings at the end of the season:

Legend:

To be clear, just because I've tagged someone for a particular midfield role, doesn't mean I think they can play it (or all facets of it) well at an AFL level, it merely reflects their mentality when placed in the midfield.

Hope you are wrong about 2021. I have begrudgingly accepted 2020 is gone- not ready to accept 2021 gonski

With the potential reduction in list size to 35 or so, players most at risk are:

Simmo, Lang, Eddie (although I hope he sticks around longer), McCreadie, Polson, Ed, BSOS, Finbar, Moore, Owies, Goddard, Cottrel.

Wouldn’t have thought any of these players have a contract beyond this year.

Also don’t think we’d be losing much relative to other teams so would help level the playing field with our depth level at the poorer end.
