No way of knowing for sure, I’m confident to put a line through Kennedy and Gibbons, I doubt they will even be on the list next year but a few of the others have a chance. Cross Kemp out as he has yet to start proper training or debut, Dow, Fish and LOB have all shown in patches that they have qualities that could make them very good players, I doubt they will be A grade, but there is a lot to work with.

I don’t think Gibbons is deserving the chop. He is no star. He is though a decent foot soldier. The only slight being that his preferred position or the position that he has the most impact in, is one where he’s down in the pecking order. His career ultimatum is basically to become an effective small forward (which he won’t) or be far down in the pecking order for a midfield gig.

Other than Kemp who is untried at AFL, I cant really see A graders developing out of that group for a host of reasons.
Setterfield - Zero urgency and doesnt like contact. I dont think he will be the big bodied mid we were all hoping for.
Dow - Terrible disposal, draft fail.
LOB - Cant be an A grade mid if all you can do is run. Maybe a outside running wingman but needs to put on size. Looks like one of those types who cant keep weight on.
Kennedy - If he aint now never will be (23 yo), cant even get a game let alone be A Grade.
Stocker - Largely untried but something seems NQR here.
Fisher - Soft and doesnt put in for 4 qtrs. Too one sided and oppo have worked him out. Has no right side what so ever.
Gibbons - One of those too good for VFL not good enough got AFL types. Great work ethic but I dont think he will be A grade.
agree on all except i dont think dow is/will be a draft fail. i think he is going to be a very good player eventually.

Caldwell on the other hand has a bit of work to do to get game time with that list. Might be one that falls out.
Hately would be my preference if we where to go to the GWS well again as he is more advanced than Caldwell, his numbers in his 2 pre season games where outstanding playing as a big bodied inside mid, Caldwell probably has a better outside game but atm is a fair way behind Hately.

He needs to vastly improve his disposal though. I have a fundamental problem with kids who get through the system not being able to kick a farken footy properly. I cant see them learning how to at 18+ at an AFL club. Thats primary and high school stuff.

Yes!
Throw Petrevski-Seton, Philp, Ramsay, not to mention Cuningham and the older Martin if we so choose, in to the mix.
I think SPS will certainly be an a grade player and is looking really good at halfback where he is developing his game, will end up back in the guts and will be an exceptional player for us for years to come, has the makings of becoming a Shaun Burgoyne type player with his silk with both his ball use and his movement, would be flabbergasted if he didn’t become A grade.

Dows disposal issues are all confidence based imo, if you go back and look at his first year his disposal was pretty good, at some stage he has lost confidence in it but I think he has looked better so far this year and while he will probably never be at SPS level he can certainly get it to an exceptable level, the loss of Diesel won’t help.

Gibbons has been an integral part of all our best games with his work as the high half forward extra number at stoppages, if you go back and watch our games where we have moved the ball well down the left side Gibbons is always involved in the chains and a lot of times starts them from a stoppage on the wing by playing as the extra on the outside.

Fair points there

Asked this of someone else earlier; will ask you now as well: How many A grade mids are there across the league, under 23 years of age?

There aren't many.

Yet apparently most of our kids are a write-off because they haven't reached that mark. Give me a break.

Most of these kids are tracking very well, but are still very young and inexperienced and therefore inconsistent. Some of your comments are absurd. Dow a draft bust.

Gibbons doesn't belong on this list either. A very different case to all others named - not many actually expect him to be anything more than a contributor at senior level. Kennedy too - who actually expects him to be A grade?

I am anticipating a reduction in list sizes for next year and that he will be on the chopping block, this doesn’t meant that he won’t feature next year.

Yeah not sure that would be the case, only played in 1 of the giants pre season games and didn’t really have an impact, think he still has a way to go but he definitely has talent.

Didn't see the game but I'll take your word for it.

I’ve thought his kicking has been very ordinary from his first game for Carlton. But l don’t believe it was too bad in u18’s.

Dead ringer Burgoyne...

Nup. Pre draft, after considerable viewing, I had Cerra significantly in front on the score of disposable, particularly kicking. This was when Dow was
being strongly rumoured as "our man". I was pleasantly surprised with the promise he showed in his early games for a raw kid, and was less concerned
over the decision, however, he has not progressed sufficiently with his time in the system.

Observing from the periphery, I put the majority of this down to Bolt's policy of playing the kids in prime roles at all costs. He has the package to be an excellent player, but is still seemingly in the entitled category. Plenty of good reports pre season, but output still questionable. Not privy to the inner
sanctum, but would love to see Stocker given as much leeway and chance. Every time I see footage of training, I see explosive beast Jones at the tail of
the running drills. Some players don't switch on until there is a ball in their hands. We are screaming out for a Stocker type, combative with high quality
dual sided disposal. By no means do I write off Dow, but struggle to see why Stocker is forced to tread water when the two are compared.

This business with Stocker reportedly being miles away from ready just doesn’t cut it.
He has now had 2 pre seasons under the vaunted Russell and whilst obviously not expecting to see the fully developed finished product at this stage, a player with his needed attributes should be in the frame by now.
So why isn’t he ?
Does he not work hard enough ?
Does he not fit the group dynamic ?
Many questions ... time for answers ...

Burgoyne's athleticism was unreal at the same age. SPS is class, but let's not get ridiculous.

You've described 99% of Gibbons' output when in possession. He just gets utterly lost anywhere else on the ground, and has to outsmart his opponent to get free on the wing or in the 50.

If you're being serious about his value, he's in the bottom third of our list.

Russell gets a massive tick just for getting Doc and Willo back out on the park, that alone is well worth the price of admission imo, thank the heavens he had the wherewithal to look to cricket and Pat Cummins as a means to fixing Willo’s continued debilitating back issues, having this kid fit and firing is huge for our development as he is right up there with our best young talent and even has the potential to be one of our best in the future, and well Doc speaks for himself. Thank you Mr Russell👍
