I'm confused, I didn't think you could use multiple late selections to match bids any longer. Cant you only take as many selections to the draft as you have list spots available or can you do it via live trading on the night?

It seems to me that the Giants matched a bid on an elite draftee with largely meaningless picks.

Those picks they matched with had to be in the live boards at the time, so they were legit to be used in a bid.

I can only consciously recall Fremantle having a deficit of any note when Carlton bid on Liam Henry, Fremantle did not have anywhere near enough points to match bid on picks they had late in this draft, so in real time did a live trade with Port to get more points of draft picks this draft for a future 2nd rounder. It meant they reduced the deficit held over next year quite a bit. I think I remember working out it would mean Fremantle first round pick next year is likely to be 3 or 4 picks down the order to make up the deficit.

Jumped on Kayo to find where this bid happened in the live telecast.
So pick 9 Carlton make a bid on Liam Henry.
Pick 9 in Draft Value Index equals 1469 points
A 20% discount for Fremantle nominated NGA player means they need 1459 - 294 points to match the live bid. That is 1175 points on DVI of 2019 draft picks.
They had four live picks of 49, 58, 66 and 73 on the live board at that point of the draft.
What happens if they match live bid on Henry at that point is pick 9 is theirs for Henry and their other three picks are all pushed back to picks 85, 87 and 88 to still have four picks in total for the draft.

Picks 49, 58, 66 and 73 were worth 546 points on DVI system.

To match the live bid at the time will cost them 1175 points. If they match at that point their DVI deficit going into 2020 draft would have been 629 points. That would have meant if they would slide about 9 spots back in draft order of first round next year if they match the mid at that point.... Hence the live trade with Port at that point to acquire more DVI points from this 2019 draft so reduce the cost carried over to next year's draft.

Fremantle Live Trade with Port Adelaide is pick 66 and their 2020 Second Round Draft pick to Port
for
pick 52 and 55 of this live draft.
DVI shows pick 52 and 55 worth 453 points in total.
Pick 66 they give to Port with is worth 80 points on DVI.
They acquire 373 more points to use for live bid on Liam Henry at that point.

I assume their original pick 73 simply went off board at that point as they only had four picks for draft in total allocated.
Picks 49,52,55 and 58 equate to 910 bidding points.
So live bid needs 1175 points and a deficit of 265 points to carry over to 2020 AFL draft.

Rather than slide back about 9 spots in first round of next years draft they have reduced that slide to about 3 spots in first round of next years draft by doing a live trade with Port to acquire more bidding points to reduce the deficit.
Hence why they were willing to sacrifice their second round pick of next year's draft in the live trade with Port.

When you match one pick with multiple picks, the multiple picks don’t disappear into thin air. The first pick gets the points from all the other picks and moves up to where the bid was matched, while the rest have 0 points remaining and move back to the end of the draft where they are put back in reverse ladder order by round. They still exist but they have no real value anymore.

Pick 73 on DVI is worth 9 points but Fremantle only could have four picks in draft so by getting two from Port for this draft, their own original pick 73, is no longer required. So those 9 DVI points went away for them in matching as they do not have that pick anymore. For Fremantle's sake it does go off the board but for the league itself the total picks for draft is not reduced by one pick.
Port must simply get an extra pick at back end of draft so the same pick numbers in total the league have allocated stays the same for this draft at that point.
That is way I read it when look at in in full.

GWS had 6 available list spots, so took 6 picks to the draft.

Drafted Ash with their first pick, matched the Green bid with their next 5, so four of those picks shuffled to the very back of the draft.

They then traded a late future pick for a fourth round pick and drafted Riccardi, then drafted another player with the last pick in the draft, and passed on their last two picks, to run with a 38 player senior list, and have two extra rookie picks.

So for example if Fremantle finish same spot on ladder as this year, via ladder they should be pick 6 in next years draft but due to deficit of points the DVI difference between pick 6 and 9 should make up the points they owed to match on Henry and the clubs that were going to have pick 7, 8 and 9 would move up one spot each for Fremantle to go back to pick 9 to pay their debt for matching Henry in round one of this 2019 draft.

I think GWS will also have a fair sized deficit. But as they don't have a first rounder, it will just mean their second rounder gets pushed back to the fourth round.

GWS used picks 41, 56, 59, 67 & 71 to match the Green bid at pick 10. Total points 862.
Pick 10 with discount cost 1116 points.

Therefore, 254 points comes off the 2nd rounder that they now hold.

So it seems like Fremantlle will have a deficit of 265 points and GWS a deficit of 254.

Lore's table above is based on clubs finishing same spot as this year so for example it shows presently Fremantle would get pick 6 based on ladder position being the same. If GWS were runners up, their first pick of draft due to trading their 1st rounder would be pick 36 in round two.

But then both clubs need to pay their debt from matching the bids in 2019 draft and not having enough DVI points at time from that draft alone.

Fremantle with a pick 6 worth 1751 points have to lose 265 points and have a pick worth no more than 1486 on Draft Value Index
Pick 9 is worth 1469 points so sliding back three spots in first round of next year's draft looks about right.

Giants with a pick 36 worth 502 points have to lose 254 points and have a pick worth no more than 248 points on DVI.
Pick 52 is worth 246 points so sliding back 16 spots in draft order looks what should happen to them in next year's draft.

Be interesting to find out next October if that is exactly what happens.

Who knows what they will do but you would think half way would be as acceptable as any other way.

The shorter the season though the more questionable I guess it becomes whether you can use it. I think anything over 1/3rd of the season probably.

Everything I had was correct bar one: Collingwood has North Melbourne's third round pick, while GWS retained their own.

The rest of what I had is the same as what the AFL have got in that article.

Gotta be some kind of miracle that what I had wasn't more inaccurate than that.
