Afl is spending more money than any sport in history propping up expansion teams in area where game has been played for 100 years & been live on FTA for 40 years.
Now you going to take over world!!! Not enough money in existence
As you pointed out, AFL does not allow investors. So the money AFL is spending is money it's generating.

A league has investors, not because this is a good thing, but because it must.

It cannot generate the money it needs itself.

Lucky for them, there is never an end to vanity investors. People who don't care if it's a good investment or bad, so long as their name is up in lights (that and the property concessions).

Now that the A-League has completed its season with a grand final that barely anyone watched, they have to think about their future.
SBS is reporting that the clubs are looking to reduce wages across the board, not just those who are off contract, but for even those players with contracts.

With the salary cap likely to fall from $3.6 million to $2.1 million next season, the clubs are pushing for a 12-month agreement with the players, the current CBA having expired on September 1.

Clubs also want to reduce the salary cap floor from $2.88 million to $1.7 million in alignment with the diminishing distributions.

Club chiefs have told the PFA their over-arching imperative is “ensuring the survival of all 12 clubs and the competition”.

Owners have lost over $500 million between them since the inception of the competition 15 years ago, and some keen observers note they have “more to lose” than the players in an increasingly torrid standoff.
Thank goodness there are more wanting to "invest" in Australian soccer.

The ongoing NRL wage (cuts) are back in the news:
'The NRL has told the players union that the COVID crisis is set to wipe $400 million off the game’s bottom line as it attempts to find some common ground on the salary cap for next season and avoid another bitter pay dispute.
...... the figure encompasses this season and the next two, taking the game through until the end of the current broadcasting cycle at the end of 2022. At the heart of those losses are the discounts provided to broadcasters for the next two seasons and the absence of gate receipts and potentially sponsorship for clubs.'

' The figure has been put to the players’ union as part of talks designed to end the painstaking search for a salary cap figure that sits well with the NRL, the clubs and the players.

The NRL had initially hoped to have the cap for next season in place by the end of August.

However, it now appears likely the end of this month is a more realistic target as the parties haggle over whether the cap should be reduced by five or 10 per cent, and whether squad numbers should be sliced.

........ club chiefs have become increasingly concerned with uncertainty over the future.
Many are attempting to piece together budgets for next season, yet they are forced to do so with no knowledge of what they must pay the players or what the club grant will be.

They are plucking figures from the sky as the NRL and Rugby League Players Association drag their heels on the future.

I may be wrong, but didn't V'Landys indicate at the beginning of the Covid crisis that player wages/list sizes wouldn't be cut and the reduction in revenue would be absorbed elsewhere, or something to that effect? I'm sure I remember the discussion in this thread.

No disrespect intended, I'm genuinely interested here, as I'm a big fan of the discussion of the nuances of the competing sports codes in Australia/the world.

What is your actual point in all of this? Soccer is in a better position than Australian Football? Are you here just to troll AFL fans or...?
Still waiting for a response to this.

You are dead right. Vlandys himself directly referenced it in self assessing his performance against the AFL

It was relayed with full credulity by the media boosters

The clear takeaway is , as was already obvious to many, the man is full of sh*t

I won't hold my breath on the Sydney media calling him out on it then, either

The low class Sydney media (just like the NRL) love him because they like being in the company of another loud mouthed bogan!
He is riding for a fall and it will come sooner rather than later. People like him tend to get bored very quickly when the media spotlight is not on them all the time!!

Perhaps you could link what Mr V'L said & relate it to what was reported.
Amongst others there's this - https://wwos.nine.com.au/nrl/peter-...for-2021/1dbf4a63-0474-46d5-81f7-b6b9b2f4df66

Going back to last year, all the 'office gossip' I heard in Sydney had V'L pinned as nothing more than a News Ltd tool, hence why the Sydney News Ltd media relentlessly campaigned to undermine the previous NRL chairman Smith while promoting V'Landys as his successor, and, having achieved this, V'Landys promptly 'negotiated' a long term extension to the Foxtel deal - but without providing any details (for the first time ever) as to its worth. Let's just say that News Ltd are very happy with their investment in their man.

Dug back and pg 49-50 of this thread was the discussion I recall.

SMH A. Proszenko 30.5

Proszenko said

"The NRL is set to increase its cost cutting campaign to at least $70m next year...Given the new broadcasting deals are worth less than the original ones...expenses will need to be slashed at Rugby League Central to free up spending".
$100m of emergency funding will made to NRL clubs in 2020.

On 11.5 in the Daily Telegraph, P. Rothfield said, in "Monday Buzz How The NRL Will Cut $50m a Year", the NRL will be permanently cutting at least $50m per year from its HQ operating costs (which were c. $183m pa in 2019).

(Behind a paywall- can anyone open, & post here)

P. V'landys has said NRL grants to Clubs will not be cut from 2021, cf 2019 levels. NRL HQ (which previously employed c.400 staff, which include c. 200 Development Officers) cuts of $50-70m pa are a very large amount- where else will permanent cuts be made?

G. McLachlan has told the Clubs that the AFL new Rights' deals, cf old, have been reduced by 12-13%- causing a total reduction, over their duration, of $150m to the AFL. The Seven new deal is to 2024, whilst Foxtel's deal is still to 2022 only. The AFL will receive, in total, c. $70m less from Seven, & c. 80m less from Foxtel. Seven will also achieve a further $20m in its production costs.

McLachlan has also said the NRL% new Rights' cut was double -c. 25%, & the NRL total reduction is c. $300m.
V'landys has denied these claims, implying the NRL has done better than the AFL in its new deals. Making cuts of $70m in 2021 to NRL HQ makes V'landys claims dubious- although if the NRL doesn't reduce grants to its clubs in 2021 (from 2019 level), it can be argued the NRL financial position is not dire.
NRL 2020 financial overview: Peter V’landys saves clubs from cost-cutting carnage

So V'Landys is cutting $160mil in the next three years from NRL "operations" and still manages to give the clubs back an extra $1.1mil each in the second half of this year.

I know it's been discussed but it's pretty obvious he is prioritising the NRL Competition/Club's survival now over the future development of the game at grass-roots level. Losing a club would be a massive financial hit RE TV rights money, and maybe the ARLC are just gambling on the fact that Rugby League will remain the sport of choice for the most talented kids in Sydney and Brisbane in the medium-term even if they cut GR funding....Who knows? Rugby Union is on it's knees, Soccer is at it's lowest point in Australia in a long time...

V’landys is Trump.

Brags about his negotiation skills then ends up with a deal worse than his competitors. When asked about it lies about his ‘achievements’ and insists that he has ‘secret figures’ that actually mean he’s done the best, against all known facts.

His only known plan involves desperately slagging off those who he sees as being against him. Has no agenda to grow his game and is seemingly taking money away from those at the bottom (grass roots, development) in order that those at the top (NRL clubs) have a larger share of a diminishing pie. Is protected by News Corp media to further Murdoch’s interests.

The sooner people like these are removed from power the better off everyone will be.

You'd never think people could turn someone into a messiah, when he actually successfully re-negotiated their main revenue source downwards, and by a lot (while promising everyone they'll get the same dollars).

The slimey News Corp will get into bed with any whore if it makes them MONEY!
They will tell blatant lies and twist the truth to get what they want = same as V'Landys.!

Ha - inactive previous bosses didn't seem to upset anybody here. A lot people fear V’landys & his track record of success
He certainly gets things done, but fear? I'm not so sure. There's definitely an obsession with a few posters here but I dare say that's born out of bemusement at the way he conducts himself publicly.

The reaction of any number of pro AFL/anti sport more generally posters on this thread who are late to Mr V'L have a sameness about them.
