RU only really needs to play matches in NSW and Qld as that's where the game is mainly played and supported.

Not only is that a traditional problem (having a base in two states only) but RU isn't doing too well in it's home territory.

The other big problem is that the Wallabies are not a truly national team as nearly all their players come from NSW and QLD and now about half from the Pacific Islands and NZ!

The Wallabies are being increasingly noticed as a two-state team.
The decreasing Australian content in RU and NRL is being increasingly noticed.

The other big problem is that the Wallabies are bring thrashed.

Hardcore NRL fans? Probably not. But casuals? Yeah i'd reckon there'd be a few. Don't underestimate the number of casuals that usually watch the major events.

Here is some industry commentary IF you are interested Rob, goes to things like demographics that are important in some circles

The_Wookie where does that leave the Roy Masters cup?

One of the perennial excuses with the A-League appears to be settled :

'Football Federation Australia and the A-League clubs have finally ended years of haggling and come to an agreement over the future direction of Australia's elite soccer competition.
The clubs will take control of the A-League before Christmas ....

The clubs will take control of the marketing and commercialisation of the A-League and will be able to lead the drive for outside investors. With several clubs facing massive financial pressure as a result of the coronavirus pandemic fresh capital is crucial in the short term.

They will also be responsible for drawing up the fixture in conjunction with FFA, which wants the competition to move to winter so that it runs in tandem with the rest of the lower-tier leagues in Australia.'

As usual the devil is in the detail.

I can't see the change in admin will make a great deal of difference to this failed comp. The A League image is far too tarnished for a comeback!

The way I see it those with their hard earned ($mils) invested in club ownership will drive the decisions, not a bunch of administrators impressed by their own importance.
Whether soccer more generally can deal with the change remains to be seen.

Stan Sport:

Nine Entertainment Co, which owns Stan, is expected to announce the creation of Stan Sport on Monday morning.

Nine Newspapers are reporting there will be Wallabies Tests, the Rugby Championship and one game a week of Super Rugby on its television network under the new deal.

All other Super Rugby games, the Shute Shield and Hospital Cup will sit behind a paywall on Stan.

The way I see it those private investors invested in club ownership will drive selfish decisions, not a bunch of independent administrators.

Whether soccer more generally can deal with the change remains to be seen.

Whether soccer more generally can deal with it's demise remains to be seen.

What sports do Channel 9 currently have digital rights for?

Now Union, Australian Tennis, Netball, some Golf (?), some cricket (though digital might be with Foxtel there), some Rugby League that isn't NRL owned (test matches??, maybe also on Fox).

Interesting nontheless.

Seems the 9s tennis will have a oresence on StanSport this summer.

A summation of the Rugby deal, Stan Sport & the FTA arm of 9:

Seems the 9s tennis will have a oresence on StanSport this summer.
that would suck if the showcourts on the Aussie summer of tennis is locked behind a paywall. But also smart of them as well. Tennis is a good sport to have a new platform on as it is cheap and provides hours on hours of content. We barely get any coverage of the French or US Open in Australia and the AO pays for itself on the main channel.

there is talk that the Australian Summer of Tennis will be extended due to Covid past the Aus Open. The WTA and ATP do not have any solid plans for the tennis schdule outside the AO. Indeed, there are no current plans before the AO and there is also talk that all the warm up events(Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and the ATP Cup) will be played in Melbourne. We are meant to hear something this week, though they have been saying that for the last month.

So RU will be still behind a paywall? Just a different paywall? How much is Stan Sport?

Dont see it that way, FTA is the key for RU.

... the shift to Nine Entertainment — a three-year deal worth $100m that will see all Test matches and one Super Rugby game aired on free-to-air TV each week while the company’s paywall-protected movies-and-drama streaming service Stan will show the rest.

"You will be able to watch Rugby ad-free, right here on Stan with the sport package."

The sport package is a new service, not part of the basic (existing) service. Does that sound familiar?

Think the NSW & Q State stuff is streamed, schoolboy too (?) in some form, pay for view already.
