So whats the substance of the Mr V'L claims?

None you'd have to assume otherwise surely he would have provided something of substance? VLandys quotes in that article are bluster.

Do you not think if the actual figure wasn't a 25% reduction for the NRL then an alternative number would have been put out there?

The only facts VLandys provided are damning ones:

“The proof is in the pudding,” he says. “We’re giving NRL clubs more money, the players have only taken a 20 per cent cut and we’ve got no borrowings. We’re very comfortable where we are at.”

This thing is going to hurt for them for a long long time

He's good at self-promotion.
He's got a loud mouth.
The broadcasters saw him coming a mile off.

I've no problem with your description, the broadcasters made their decisions on financial terms, no room in the real world for poor decisions - none of the companies involved are travelling well enough to over pay or extend contracts performing poorly.

1. Sports technology expert L. McCoy says (following Foxtel's "insulting" offer of $10- 11m pa for the A League Rights) the A League should set up its own streaming Channel to broadcast all its games- & perhaps on sell some games to Foxtel etc.
The FFA would use far fewer cameras (much less than Foxtel's current 15 cameras per A League game), thus greatly cut its production costs- only c. $10,000 production costs for a streamed A League game

Mc Coy also states for the A League streaming model to work most effectively, & for it to, crucially, maximise its paid streaming subscription nos., it must further tap into soccer's large playing base. He, therefore, states that the A League must move to a winter comp. to facilitate this allignment.

2. A reminder that ABC Four Corners program this Monday 8.30 pm, 15.6, will focus on Australian sport, & the challenges of covid-19 etc.
The ABC is also studying changing trends & participation in GR sport in Australia- but this report might be in an another program.

A strange theory - reduce the quality of the broadcast, limit it's exposure to hard core fans of the game that are prepared to pay for a streaming channel and then.......profit? Foxtel aren't going to pay for that - not to broadcast on their cable channels anyway. They might run a few games through Kayo.

Why don't these other sports including the afl negotiate with optus, i know quite a few people that dumped foxtel for optus when the epl moved there.

optus is buying complete content, i dont think they want to get into production (may be wrong, im pretty sure its optus i heard this about)

CH 7 are in a world of pain and with a share price of only 17 cents are worth very little as a going concern.
Lets hope they can pay the AFL on time!

He is meant to be an expert, but all he is repeating is the wishful thinking of soccer fans on social media the last few years.

I'm sure the AFL will negotiate with Optus if Foxtel don't roll over to an extention on the afls terms for 23/24

Ultimately foxtels (and Kato's) model is heavily dependent on having the AFL rights. The AFL just weren't as desperate as the nrl let alone the other codes

V'Landys further showing himself to be a clown.

“Nobody is correctly reporting what our deal is and I’m pleased they’re getting it wrong because it shows both us and our broadcasters have maintained commercial confidence.”
I'm absolutely certain that if the NRLs numbers on savings were better, V'Landys would be trumpeting those numbers from the rooftops. Lots of spin and no substance here.

The guy is a technology expert, not sure he'd across commercial viability.

Many sports followers see it as the way to go, but dont offer the guaranteed dollars of FTA or Pay.

Do you understand what the share price indicates, or that SevenMedia not Seven Group own Channel 7.
We are talking about Seven West Media who owns CH 7 share price on the ASX Friday was 14C.

Seven Group Holdings who hold 40% of Seven West Media share price Friday was $17.35 Two different companies!

"Instead, Stokes is busily shrinking his media empire, selling off Seven West’s magazine division to Bauer Media for $40 million last month, and even doing a sale and lease back on the old WA News headquarters at Osborne Park in Perth, a move which brought in $75 million".

"These two deals have raised $115 million in much-needed cash over the past month, reducing Seven West Media’s net debt, which was last publicly disclosed as $541.5 million in February, to below $500 million for the first time in a decade".

"If Stokes isn’t prepared to recapitalise Seven West Media, which has a share price wallowing at around 14c, then his Seven Group Holdings should surrender control and sell its 40% stake.

Fast forward a decade and media investments, primarily the 40% stake in Seven West Media, now comprise a meagre $100 million of the assets owned by Seven Group holdings which is a $6 billion conglomerate spanning WesTrac, Coates Hire, some oil and gas assets and now a 10% stake in Boral".

Crikey .... you seem to be misrepresenting yourself with plagiarism.

Not plagiarism! Just quoting the Steven Maine article which is of the same opinion as mine that CH 7 owner Seven West Media is in trouble and it dosen't look like Kerry Stokes is interested in bailing them out!

Latest news on Seven West. Some interesting points being make about CH Sevens future.

Seven boss turns away Oaktree Capital

  • US private equity firm Oaktree Capital offered to buy some of Seven West Media's debt but was turned away by chief executive James Warburton.
Industry sources familiar with the discussions said Oaktree, the firm behind the recapitalisation of Nine Entertainment Co in 2012, contacted the Kerry Stokes-controlled broadcaster midway through the coronavirus pandemic with a "loan-to-own" offer to buy some of the $541.5 million net debt pile.
Seven West Media has been trying to pay down its half a billion dollar debt pile.

The purchase of some of Seven's debt may have provided some relief to the broadcaster, which like many media companies has been in discussions with its banks due to drastic declines in revenue that because of economics factors related to coronavirus pandemic.

1. SMH G. Robinson 10.6

RA is in talks with major Private Equity firm KKR to explore the possibility of KKR taking part ownership of RA, with a major injection of much needed funding into RA.

RA does not have a Rights' deal with any media co. from 2021. The only media co that was interested was Foxtel- which walked away from talks 4 months ago.
Foxtel will, however, broadcast the new, reshaped local "Super Rugby" comp., that starts July 3 2020- at a much reduced discount.

2. The ABC Q & A panel program, tonight Monday 15.6, at 9.35 pm. will be devoted to "the future of sports".
McLachlan, V'landys & other sports' leaders will also be on the panel.
(I, in a previous post, mistakenly said Four Corners would do this Sports' program tonight).

3. Australia has firmed as favourite to host the soccer 2023 Women's World Cup- if successsful, it would be a coup for soccer in Australia.

EDIT:

4. Mc Lachlan has stated that the AFL will want to repay its debts (possibly several hundred million$) asap ie not carry the debts for many years.

A quicker repayment means other AFL spending areas will have to be cut very sharply, as debt repayment is being prioritised.

The AFL has stated that player wages & Football Dept. spending, & AFL HQ costs, will again be cut from 2021.

AFAIK, it has not also announced cuts to GR spending in NSW, Qld. & ACT from 2021. If this occurs, the significant GR growth in NSW, Qld. & ACT will very likely be negatively affected- but other sports are also likely to cut their GR funding. I hope the AFL does not cut this funding.

Will GR AF in NSW, Qld. & ACT (cf other codes) be worse off from 2021? We know that the NRL, RA, & FFA are in more severe financial stress than the AFL- how much will these codes cut their GR spending from 2021?

EDIT 2

THe Age J. Niall 12.6

McLachlan said

"We must remain vigilant on balancing investment in the next generation of participants & players while maintaining discipline on costs".

This suggest the AFL is keen to maintain strong GR funding in NSW, Qld. & ACT- these states' continuing growth is integral to the long term future of AF.
If this AFL funding continues, at almost similar pre-covid levels, the other codes, in their much greater weakened financial position, are likely to lose further GR market share to AF (re competition player nos.).

Looking forward to it!
It will be interesting to see how the bogan loud mouth V'Landys performs or is he just a toothless tiger?

Pretty disappointing as he and Gill were not on the show a bit of false advertising by the ABC who in their promos said the leaders of the NRL and AFL would appear.
I watch Q& A a lot but last night was quite boring mostly virture signalling about female sports and racism.
