California-based Silver Lake purchased Ticketek owner TEG from Affinity Equity Partners for $1.3bn last year and is known to have been actively examining distressed opportunities globally in the media and technology space — the sectors in which it specialises — since the onset of COVID-19.

The understanding is that it has been holding active discussions in the local market, although its actual interest could be in securing sports rights locally rather than acquisitions.

Good to see old motor mouth Kennett get stuck into bogan V'Landys!

The Hawthorn president started his attack by saying V'landys was a "silver medallist" and "desperate" for media attention.

"The AFL leaves his code for dead right around the country. That is represented not only in the membership, it’s represented by people who attend the games, and is represented by the TV audiences," Kennett said.
"Down here, he’s irrelevant. We don’t even know who he is. There are a few in the sporting game that know his name - through football or racing - but he could walk down the street here in Melbourne and no one would recognise him," Kennett said.
"You know he’s irrelevant to places like Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, the ACT and the Northern Territory."
"I can understand a silver medallist floundering, desperately trying to become a gold medallist. I can only encourage him to keep trying because as long as he continues to make comments that are only designed to score media coverage, you know he’s desperate.

Yeah they are both about as bad as each other!
The difference is V'Landys is more like a silly teenage girl who just enjoys stirring up crap!

This is the clincher!

It was in the days of no multichannels either. As if 7 were going to show the NSL in prime time on their main (only) FTA channel.

Exactly. Channel 7 bought the NSL rights for 10 years for content for C7 in 1998. At that point that had three more years left of the AFL rights which they subsequently lost.

One email from a channel 7 exec to another claiming "ingratitude" is the extent of the "evidence" of a conspiracy

Some sad sack has actually edited the wiki page to that effect!

Attempt to harm soccer[edit]
During the trial it was revealed that C7 had purchased the rights to National Soccer League content with the intention of "suffocating" coverage of the sport to benefit the AFL (i.e., Australian rules football). This was evidenced by an email from C7 to the AFL complaining about the AFL's ingratitude.[12]

You could go and look at the source listed in the article, based on a court case outlining a case between News and C7
If News Ltd is perceived to have acted dishonourably in buying pay TV rights for sport, so has C7. An email from C7 executive Steve Wise, cited in the Federal Court, makes it clear the network bought the rights to football only to bury it, to please the AFL.

Written in November 2000 when Channel Seven still had the AFL rights, it lamented the AFL's ingratitude, saying: "There is no credit that we have secured the soccer rights and sufficated (sic) the sport, much to the chagrin of its supporters."

Football Federation Australia chief executive John O'Neill, asked to comment on the email, said: "At the time Soccer Australia chairman David Hill trumpeted the Channel Seven-C7 deal as an absolute lifeline for mass entertainment soccer . . . if the email is interpreted literally, it appears their intention was to bury soccer.

damn, that sad sack for actually quoting a source and telling facts........

seriously, just shut up. It is on the public record, which is not a very good conspiracy. And no one on this forum has really ranted about it, outside you.

It was Pay TV rights. There was only a small FTA component to the deal. I am a bit young to remember this era though. it was 20 years ago and Soccer Australia is never blameless. It is a lesson to learn from, one for which sports never seem to learn. Pay TV is a crap way to promote a sport and the TV commercial business is cutthroat

Wow, that really wound you up didn't it :)

So you actually think that email (which I quoted in full despite your triggering) confirms that channel 7 paid $25M (in 1998 dollars) for soccer rights just to bury it for the AFL, for whom they had three years left? Rather than the less batshyt crazy explanation that they bought it for pay tv content and realised quickly it was a stinker of FTA?

What is delicious about it though is how much it plays in to soccer fans paranoia :)....even though the next 20 years has proved that soccer doesn't even have FTA value with multi-channels these nut jobs are still clinging to one email to try to convince themselves their persecution complex is justified

To be fair, it's one email, which may or may not have been written tongue in cheek, by someone that may or may not have been in any sort of position of authority. The guy could have just been taking the piss out of soccer fans crying about it.

I was around back then and remember reasonably well the state of play. A lot of soccer people genuinely believed that the only thing holding soccer back from being number 1 in the country was the media. They weren't just saying it, they actually believed it - they even had stickers made that said "nobody screws soccer like 7", so it's no wonder that Channel 7 employees would have a bit of a laugh about it. It's really just the last 5 years when a cloud of reality has descended upon that element of society that perhaps it's not the media at all.

Great post.

I am far from convinced we have seen the end of the "media holding soccer back" conspiracy true believers though.

Or you interpret that email as a representative of 7, confirming that they intended to destroy another sport for "likes". The fact of the matter is that we can not prove which interpretation it is but you can't blame people who love a sport to have car stickers deriding a TV network if something like this is in the public arena.

Lets put it another way. If this happened to the AFL or even your AFL Club, and that a company employee stated that they intended to sink your love(or outright refused to show it in any way), you would be annoyed above any other emotion.

Yes, the ABC removed some highly rated state competitions in favour of some b.s. "national" competitions.

I'm certainly not blaming them (and in any case, the stickers pre dated the federal court case), I'm just raising the likelihood that one email isn't really strong evidence of much.

Like most conspiracy theories, this one fails the rationality test.

Nameless evil people spending untold millions on dark deeds, for no particularly discernible reason.

The very statement, lack of gratitude by the AFL, gives it away.

A network spent $10s of millions doing an underhanded favor for a sport, only to lose the rights to that sport in a few years.

Not money well spent then.

Perhaps if they had put that money to the rights?

An email from C7 executive Steve Wise, cited in the Federal Court, makes it clear the network bought the rights to football only to bury it, to please the AFL. So, not nameless. It is a stupid reason but AFL TV rights were vital to 7. people do stupid things. it was probably bad ratings and convenient reasoning. perhaps even tongue in check. the written word can mislead. But that email and the actions of 7 rightly pissed off some people who loved their clubs and sport. But i guess they are just sad sacks.

And you are massively overstating the value of TV rights to the NSL. And it was not money well spent, never said it was by 7 or soccer Australia.

It feels like the decision of both soccer and rugby union to sign their club comps up to pay TV only deals was a massive mistake. Back when most people didn't have great alternatives to flicking around the FTA channels, it was an opportunity to reach new audiences, especially kids who weren't fanatics of any code yet. Nowadays the door is shut, nobody watches FTA unless they're specifically there for a particular program, hence little flicking around channels.

Once upon time it was common for a Tahs vs Reds game to get well in excess of 100k on Fox.
Those days are well and truly gone, but still, 95k isn't that bad.
Likewise, the A-League struggles to get anywhere near 95k these days.

The A-League has more than 2 games per week. Waratahs and Reds are by far the 2 largest teams in the country and its the premier domestic rugby matchup. It's not really comparable.
Not that its a bad number given where they sit at the moment, especially given they're playing in a hastily arranged mickey mouse comp.
