It's disappointing in a low scoring game that the umpires feel the need to have an influence.

Reckon they paid the downfield where the ball landed rather than where it crossed the boundary line.

That’s a serious kick regardless though. They lost one against Port from a similar spot after the siren, and now win one in a similar fashion!

Not calling a free kick for Ryan literally throwing the ball to Betts 30 seconds earlier was one of the worst decisions I've ever seen. But I don't know how anybody can have a problem with the downfield call

Haven't seen it a second time, but I thought the Freo bloke was largely stationary.

Why did Newnes get to take the free? Gibbons was the one closest to the ball down field.

The umpiring changed the result.

There were two frees to Freo that should have been down field, then the deliberate call that was wrong and the free wasn't there, but also why was it given down field when Freo were twice denied down field frees for contact after kicking the ball.

Line ball is being generous. The Freo guy attempted a smother and barely touched the Carlton player. It certainly wasn’t high and no way deserved to be down ground... particularly after two push in the backs for Freo after disposal were called back twice in the last few minutes. Garbage decision... great kick though.

That was also Gibbons’ kick, Newnes wasn’t even in picture when it went out on the full. How did the umpire choose Newnes?

This is what passes me off with Vic bias commentators on Fox Footy. The wrong player took the free kick yet if this was a non-Vic club they would have made more of that as an issue.
