Marchbank is a very talented player but Jones and injury have held back his development. At the start of 2017 we all thought Marchbank and Weitering would be our key defender for the next 10 years. Now he finds himself behind Jones and possibly just being a third tall defender or in the VFL. Marchbank has a big future but in 2020 i think he only plays if there are injuries or if we are up against a taller back line and we want Plowman to play on a more dangerous small. Marchbank is one of our fringe players i fear that might look for more opportunities at other clubs at the end of the year.

Nah! He knows the club value him. We fought hard to get him , and as you say injuries and Jones departure will give him a long future as Weiterings partner. But in the meantime we can look at playing him on the wing

They’ll come hunting our list for value at years end just as we’ve been doing to them. We need to set our markers. We need to play our best team but with an eye on the future.

I agree 100% Weitering is ready to really dominate games, I think there are about 6 players on our list that are ready to step up and become A graders add them to our older players like Kreuzer, Murphy, Simpson, Ed and Betts plus our leaders Cripps and Doc and this is were our improvement is going to come from. Having Doc back will that a bit of pressure off of him so he can just focus on he’s own game instead of having to be a leader in the backline. I can’t wait to see how good he can be in 2020 and beyond.

The problem is Jones turn 29 this month and has at least 3 or more years left and Marchbank will be 24 at the end of the year and should be really starting get to his peak performance by then. Look at Adelaide Talia is getting on and then they have some kids. Cats, Roos or bombers could chase him as well, they all have some older defenders that they need to replace.

Great analysis Terry

I think Cuners should play a dedicated role on straight line runners such as a Gaff, Phillips type wingman

For some time now, I had concerns that DC was a poor reader of play, but I think it is more about his concentration levels. Play a run with role would keep his mind on the job, then use his burst to pull away from one paced wingmen

Ultimately, it is having continiuty

You would take one of our most explosive and naturally gifted offensive players and shift him into a largely defensive role? It doesn't really compute tbh.

And if he has concentration issues (which I do tend to agree with, somewhat), playing him in a defensively accountable role is probably not a good thing. He'd be back shoulder of Gaff and then in no man's land the next.

He needs to play his natural game.

Well if he was playing on a one paced player leading him to the ball, then using his burst, wouldn't that play to his strengths and weaknesses?

What would you consider to be his natural game?

We can deploy him in the midfield where he can win the ball 25 times and hurt the opposition with his explosiveness and evasion (see Richmond and Collingwood games in 2019).

Or we can use him across half forward where he can again use his speed and class to accumulate 15-18 touches and 1-2 goals + 1-2 goal assists (see Hawthorn and Bulldog games in 2019).

Either way, an absolute weapon if utilised correctly.

Plow, you have just highlighted his inconsistencies, aka his other outings when he goes missing for long periods

Not trying to hamper his strengths, trying to improve his weaknesses

Not an uncommon occurrence for a 22 year old who has had to endure a kidney haematoma and knee injury through the year. Had a fairly good year considering.

I'm a fan of Macreadie, he has the skills to be an AFL player but like Williamson and Marchbank we haven't seen too much of them in the past two years because of injuries and that has hurt there development. Missing Docherty as well really shows the depth and talent we in our Defence. For me our starting tall defender are Jones, Weitering and Plowman with Marchbank or Casboult to cover injuries. We also have Goddard as well and BSOS as a developing tall, So where does Macreadie fit? With Curnow being injured can he play forward? Casboult looks like the ideal replacement for Curnow. I like the depth we have but it also means that at the end of 2020 we will lose players who I would like to keep.
