Unless there are legitimate concerns about his welfare, and that could well be the case after his concussions last season, I'm all for throwing him into the heat of battle. We've seen lightly framed but highly skilled players like Stephenson and Rozee tear teams apart by using their elite skills and the unbridled enthusiasm of youth, why not Sam?

He's no smaller than Fyfe when he started. I'd give him every oppertunity to play

Young and Sturt will be playing HB and HF respectively, you don't need to have a Fyfe-like physique to make an impact on flanks if you have enough nous and skill. Both of them will be at their best playing in as much space as possible and I'm confident Jlo will find ways of freeing them up if his "play to your strengths" ethos is legit.

Yeah, really hard to say - we are so used to watching Lyon who was reluctant to expose "small" kids to AFL. My best guess base don what I have seen at training is that he is definitely a chance for a shot at the small - medium forward role. Maybe not round 1 but he has said he'd like to add another 3kg before the season starts, if he does that who knows?

I reckon a lot will depend on the preseason games. If he performs like he did in the last match sim he will pretty much pick himself.

Like I have said, watching Peel will be a real blast this year!
I don't understand why these players have to work so hard to put on weight! I'm willing to be a consultant. :)

Was totally thinking the same thing - Fyfe played 18 games in his first year and got 5 brownlow votes. Then got 13 brownlow votes the next year and increased every year after. Not putting the same expectation on Sturt, but the talent is clearly there as it was with Fyfe. I would ask Sturt to wear protective headgear until he gets through quite a few games unscathed, but otherwise play him as much as possible. Also resist the temptation to drop him after one or two quiet games, only drop him if there is a real patch of poor form.

Similarly I hope we do the same for Henry (when fit) and Young. Yeah they all have skinny frames right now but they'll also be surrounded by some mature bodies that we have across all lines, I think we can get the balance right to get alot of games into all of them. Also JLo's game plan, from what I've understood from your training reports and media is that it will focus more on each player's strengths - which is clearly pace and skills for these guys at this early stage of their careers, rather than defensive contested stuff.

PS Thanks for training reports you legends - if you put them up behind a paywall I would gladly pay, unlike some other publications hahaha ;)

I wonder if Longmuir looks at him and thinks ‘Jayden Stephenson’ and what he provided for Collingwood. Not a heap of body on body happening there, just speed and skill.

Interesting thought. Does anyone know how Sturt’s speed compares to Stevensons? JS is quick as hell I can’t imagine Sturt has that kind of quickness.

Fyfe was always something special though, I remember him just floating into a pack in the back half still just a twig compared to the other players but no one was taking that ball off him. On the other hand I think we overplayed Stephen Hill in his first few seasons and it hurt him. With Sturt (and Valente) the year on an AFL list and second preseason should really help and overall I hope we play them when they are fit.

Sturt, Valente, Serong, Young, Henry (Frederick and Pina?), I would love to think that 3 or 4 of them will play 12+ games and really get an opportunity show their stuff while still not overloading them.

If you go through the main entrance and walk up the stairs towards the team store. To the left will be a collection of the old guernseys, and near them is a door leading outside to the viewing area. Can stay up stairs or head downstairs depending on preference.

Some people will sit on the grass around the oval, but I prefer the central viewing from the viewers area.

I would too but for the continual stream of ear-filling bullshit that gets put out

They have a a bit of a twin thing going in terms of body and stats. Stephenson more football in his background.

The thing is, Sturt is a perfect addition to our forward line, with several points of difference from other players. And in the end, Fyfe is the ultimate role model for him, and with JLo having coached Stephenson, perhaps the perfect coach.

Stephensons biggest strengths are that he can maintain his high speed over a long lead and he has footy smarts.
I doubt Sturt has similar strengths in regard to the speed but has a heap of potential all the same and will be a very beneficial addition to our forward line once gaining the opportunity.

Jaysus, didn’t realise Sturt was that quick off the mark.
Stephenson has high level evasion ability and speed which make him so dangerous.

Let’s hope Sturt can replicate that....

More that he gets separation in the first 5-10m.

Nah, most forwards get separation in the first 5m due to pushing off, blocking and the spilt second advantage of not having to anticipate when to go, but most defenders have no problem making that up over the next 15m - 25m but not on Stephenson. Also just to put the draft combine results into perspective, Sturt couldn’t get space or separation in the WAFL last year.

He was playing mainly midfield so his space was definitely something that was impacted by this. Before the concussions he was definitely getting separation on guys (post injury his decision making was a bit hesitant) - he has always looked faster than most though for mine. I agree he can't sustain the speed for as long as Stephenson though.
