Training 2020 Preseason

A question to those that have been attending training sessions. Are the players knuckling down to training like last year or have you noticed a slackening in intensity or maybe a bit of complacency?

We certainly cant afford to rest on our laurels after last years much improved season.

I've only been to 1 session so far and the intensity and competitive nature of the session was right up there.

Feedback from someone in management at the club has told me he has not seen them this involved and committed at this stage in pre-season before.

The pain of the finals would be seriously driving them IMO. Don’t forget how ultra-competitive these people are.

I've been to two and a half sessions including most of last Wednesday PM .

Even though it's been purely voluntary for the more senior players, I can tell you that the only one of those that I can think of that I haven't seen put in an appearance is Stef Martin (which I kinda think is understandable, considering his age and the specialist role he plays)

Lachie has been at every session I've been to ....and what a standard he sets. I've seen Zorks, Linc, Rich Lester and Charlie (who looked like an energiser bunny on Wed arvo) at all or most of the sessions I've been to.

Berry and McCluggage are true leaders and its easy to see how they are driving the culture at the club.

The drills on Wed arvo looked clean and sharp

Fear not.

Things look good at training

Luke Hodge was interviewed on SEN this week and he stated that whilst the training was for 1-4th year players 36 had turned up. This is a good indication of where their mindset is at

One of my associates ( I've come to know from these training sessions) told me that Hodgey has been really active in driving training standards.

No slackness possible with that man around.

Fantastic to hear that they are putting in. Definitly feels like the significant improvement in team results last year in addition to the young guys really putting in has made the senior guys do the extra work to almost match them. I don't remember the senior blokes this driven in any pre-season the last handful of years (maybe apart from last pre-season).

Also good to hear that the young leader in McCluggage and Berry and lam sure Andrews as well are driving the culture and standards. This is what happens when we draft leaders - which is whatr we have just drafted again in Robertson and Smith - captain of 2 U18 teams. The more leaders we can get the better.

That's good to hear but there has to be a balance so they're not burnt out before they even start the season..

For the non-South East Queenslanders the weather up here is Hot & Dry. There has been no rain for a couple of months and no significant rain forecast utill possibly February. No surprise we have had such an issue with bushfires. The boys will be doing it really tough, most of Brisbane is a dust bowl, they would be choking down that hot, dry, dusty air with each breath. If there were any games they would be abandoned under health risk rules. Would love to get a few games against Victorian sides on days and evenings like this. It is pretty easy to see we don't get a lot of soft tissue injuries the poor buggers are always warmed up properly. I remember some years ago our mid fielders like Marcus Ashcroft loosing up to 6kg's a game, well the medical team will be most busy now trying to keep weight on the boys I don't think we need worry about any carrying any extra weight.

Oddly enough, the weather conditions at both training sessions I've been to on Wednesday afternoons have been surprisingly mild, almost cool. This after it being stinking hot and dry during the rest of the day. Well, at least where I live, some 10 km away at Carina

Get in car feeling hot as hell, drive for 20 minutes ,feel sorry for what the poor lads will have to endure, arrive at Yeronga, get out of car, get a surprise at how "cool" it is with a very pleasant N to NE breeze wafting across the ground.

The ground at Yeronga is pretty close to the Brisbane river (about 300m away as the crow flies)

So I can only conclude that the proximity of a significant body of water together with the natural cooling that occurs around 4pm makes the conditions relatively friendly.

Morning sessions would be a different beast altogether.

The hour I spent there last Monday were hot and still. The only relief comes if the sun gets obscured by cloud.

A few of them looked a bit stressed with the lap work on Monday morning, particularly Rayner who really seemed to be struggling

I think common sense prevailed, because they knocked off the running pretty quickly and seemed to concentrate mainly on light drills for the rest of the first hour. As I said in an earlier post, I had to go at about 9am so I can speak for what they did in the second hour

Apologies for sticking my nose in have a vested interest in CEY how’s he looking

Thoughts on holding down a spot, was disappointed to see him leave Adelaide hope he find his niche with you guys
We were chasing a big bodied mid to help out our smaller fellas like Neale, Zorko and he fit the bill.
I think he will start as depth and provide a chop out for those boys when required.
Showed some good form up until his injury this year. So he could be good value.

Training the house down.
Re the comments about depth and development.

Back in the day the Hawks were renowned for introducing blokes out of the blue- who had been brought along slowly through their seconds.

Ely Smith, Coleman, Lyons, Skinner etc spring to mind.

Fagan will have had an input to the process no doubt.

Do they train much in the early evenings? With the sun up at 4:30 it's almost impossible to beat the heat without compromising on sleep. It's got to be more pleasant at 7pm than it is at 9am, and it's more aligned with the time we play, not to mention the dew.
