Mark Duffield: Matt Taberner’s moment ends Fremantle’s momentum in western derby loss

Here it is in a nutshell: It’s early last quarter and Fremantle summoned what was left of their energy and raised one last mighty effort.
Rory Lobb took a big pack mark and kicked a goal. West Coast’s five-goal lead became four. Then Lobb took another one.
Just as good, even closer to goal. He missed. Still they came. They pressed forward again. First gamer Michael Frederick dared to take the ball back into the corridor and go long, Matt Taberner clunked it, went back and missed everything.
Then the Eagles took the ball to the other end, 250-gamer Josh Kennedy got the ball in his hands after a holding free, and didn’t miss.
Thirty points clear again, game over, the Eagles own the derby record of 10 wins in a row.
It was fitting that Kennedy did it. It was his fourth goal and clinched the Glendinning-Allan Medal for him.
We had thought going into the game that the tall forwards would prove to be the hill that an undersized Fremantle couldn’t climb.
The Eagles held sway in the midfield after quarter time thanks to Nic Naitanui, Tim Kelly, Elliot Yeo and Jack Redden, but they also had the big guns to finish it. Kennedy starred. Luke Ryan did a mighty job on Jack Darling but Darling still weighed in.
The Dockers had owned territory for much of the first term and Taberner owned the air in their forward 50. He clunked a couple and should have gone to quarter time with three goals but got dozy with a stroll in goal and got run down by Tom Cole.
The Eagles were rolling in the second term when Naitanui got on top at centre bounces and Kelly, Redden and Yeo cashed in at ground level to send the Eagles forward.
And Fremantle had their hands full with the Eagles tall forwards. By the time the Eagles had a 29-point lead in the third, big forwards Kennedy and Darling had kicked five of their eight goals, mid-sized forward Jake Waterman had added another two.
The good part of the Dockers under Justin Longmuir is safer ball movement from defence. But the downside of that is that safe can easily become stagnant.
Too often in the second and third terms the Dockers tried to be too safe with their ball movement and got hemmed in on the back flanks and wings. At other times they kicked quickly when they needed poise and the Eagles interceptors - Jeremy McGovern, Brad Sheppard and Tom Barrass - picked them off.
The Eagles experience and class told. The Dockers were plucky but eventually outgunned, inevitably undermanned.

Like Duffs, but harsh to blame Tabs.

We're 30 down going into the final quarter. Very few teams win from that position. Tabs and Lobb missing shots kills any chance we have, but the obvious rebut is don't be in that situation in the first place.

Tabs kills momentum too often. He makes the hard look easy and the easy look impossible.

There is going to come a time where the question has to be asked by list management, are we better with him or without him?

Until we get pur injuries sorted he gets a pass, but he can only kill our momentum so many times before the balance will be tipped by a newer and shinier toy.

People forgetting that ‘throw’ call on Mundy just as our momentum was building that then handed them the ball resulting in a run of three goals and knocked the wind out us for the rest of the game? I’m not. This happens far too often to us. Happened in the ‘13 gf with the Walters elbow. ******* sick of it.

Yeah I lost my s**t at that. Was a fair call, but west coast had done it multiple times in the same passage of play to no penalty.

Can't blame the umpires for Taberner going full Reiwoldt in the goal square.

Can't blame the umpires for Lobb kicking it into the man on the mark.

Can't blame the umpires for both of them missing easy shots on goal.

Until our side has their own house in order it is silly to blame it on the umpires.

* it, they can get ****ed too.

There are certain clubs who will always get shafted by umpires as soft targets...
Us, North Melb, Gold Coast and Giants

Others are protected species like Richmond and West Coast

Having Margettes living in our state doesn't help either

We’re not in the slightest better without him. Who we have that can mark or kick a couple?
Hogan is a lame horse atm. He’s about as usual as Bennell the last two years.
He is what we got.
The only freaking Forward carrying one or two top defenders on him while Banfield and Schulz are absolutely garbage. We’re not going to win many games with a three half foward of Colyer, Banfield and Schulz. Tabs was legit 40% of the team’s goals tonight.

Tabs has lost so many games for us. He kills momentum time after time..
He will never be a game winner.
I feel for the guy but he craps himself when we need him the most.
I would get him to a psych to sort that negative voice that takes over when the pressure is on him..
Or delist.

Get the Tabs’ momentum. But we’re 30 points down. Absolute no chance at 3/4 Time. The momentum was loss in the second quarter within that 5 minute span. Clearances resulting in goal. Got to 20 points behind and never came back.
Our midfield got bullied in that time, and Tucker/Mundy were woeful.
West Coast adjusted, we didn’t. Tabs was breathing fire in the first. Pity not one pleb in the forward line joined him.

7th in the Coleman? 3rd in contested marks? 4th for marks inside 50? Yeah definitely delist material.

We were every chance if Lobb had have kicked his goal. That would have put us only three goals down with 12 minutes to go. Unfortunately it and Tabs’s shot took all the air out of us and west coast dropped some of their talls like Allen back to beat us in the air where we were vulnerable.

Duffs is my favorite journalist, but that's a load of crap.

We had 4 inside 50's in the third quarter (second lowest this season). Eagles had 16 (second highest). We didn't score in that quarter. Game was done there.

Lobb misses a goal.....nothing.

Tabs misses and off course he gets whipped. There'd be no article if this was De Goey or Buddy, in fact they'd be raving his "heroic" first quarter.

s**t article Duffield, you're better than that. Tabs was, just as he has been this season, one of our best again.

Spot on mate. Nuffies on here giving Tabs s**t, without realizing he's literally been one of the best key forwards of the comp this year.

Those stats are very impressive, more so when you realize he plays in one of the youngest teams, who sits 15th and receives horrible inside 50 delivery.
