Sorry I was too busy laughing at all the people making decisions with the benefit of hindsight.

1. No one wanted Preuss at the time. No one. TAO can confirm that (as evidenced by his comments below).
2. No one knew Tyson would make Garner look like the picture of good health.
3. No one knew GWS would continue its trend of recruiting barely usable ruckmen -> Jacobs gone and a 34 year old mumford hanging by a thread. They are clearly desperate.

I'll put my hand up. Thought Tyson for Preuss was a decent deal.

It was.

He gets on the park and the whiners will dry up just like they have a million times before.

We could have simply offered less than the original offer (say 600k per season over 2 years), given that offer wasn't accepted in a timely manner, and then make a public statement that we have a contract dispute and while that's not resolved, Brown is free to explore his options. That way there would be a path for him to stay, even though in reality we weren't going down that path, and he wouldn't want to stay on those terms.
Maybe.

I suspect that serious low-balling would have been floated to the media by his manager as proof that North didn’t want him (probably true for whatever unknown reason!) When he landed on an alternative offer such as Melbourne’s, his manager would have said ‘he’s not going back to North regardless’ (see Cameron, Saad). And bingo, we’re in the same spot.

I actually don’t buy the argument that it changes our leverage much...fact is there are few easy ways for a club to move an out-of-contract player on and still get something decent in return. We’ll see what Brady can conjure up.

Hopefully playing ball on Lachie Young greases a pick 14 deal..

Lachie Young?!

There is no point comparing Brown and Preuss' value. It's irrelevant.

Basic supply and demand.

GWS are desperate for a ruckman. Preuss looks like the only half decent one available. They overpay to get him to the club.
Agree, but hopefully Brady is running with this argument:

Melbourne is desperate for a quality key forward. Brown is now the only decent one available. They overpay to get him to the club.

I was against it at the time but after hearing the inside word on Preuss (personality wise) and his deficiencies (CV endurance not improving as much as they'd hoped it would) I understood it.

When rucks are traded I always think back to Cam Wood and Stanley situations. We did desperately need a stop gap should Cunnington pick up an injury. Unfortunately for us and Tyson...he hasn't been able to get on the part.

Luckily for Preuss and Melbourne GWS are still desperate. GWS are familiar with handling a ruck that needs to sit down for 40% of the game.

3 way trade - Stefan Martin (Brisbane) to Western Bulldogs - Lachie Young (Western Bulldogs) and pick 70 to North Melbourne - Pick 63 to Brisbane Lions
Hopefully playing ball on Lachie Young greases a pick 14 deal..
and keeps our pick 2 in the PSD in play.
