Scrapping of picks aside, this is why I'd be hesitant to trade Matt Crouch unless he gets a top 5 pick. If we let him walk next year, we could very well get that.

Brodie Smith being in a higher age bracket, can't see him netting a first rounder but could get an end of first. Same with Laird, he's in the younger age bracket but can't see him getting a large enough contract
Agree.

Trade Laird this year. Hold Matt Crouch, plus Lynch etc for free agent compo.

Ah, you're being defeatist.

This year, we focus on moving on senior talent and getting draft picks. Next year, we do the same.

By then, we will have cleared both Crouches, Gibbs, Walker, Laird, Atkins, Mackay, Lynch, Seedsman, Smith - even if we keep one or two, it's unlikely they'll still be on massive coin.

Then we start playing the free agency market. We would have brought more than a dozen players in, plus the youth from the last few years (Doedee, Milera, Hamill, McHenry, Chayce Jones, McAsey, Schoenfeld, Worrell), and we'll have tonnes of available cash.

Then we'll start to see some true improvement.

...yes I acknowledged in my original post that we would have money to splurge....but money isn't going to tempt players to a rotten club. Particularly from Victorian sides.

Sure, not this week.

But I think we'll see a couple of players want to come this offseason. And if we're clearly improving, that will attract others.

This year is a disaster, but the media will get bored and move onto new things. We need to make sure we don't waste a good crisis, and we get as much fixed this off season as possible. New chair, new CEO and COO, now coaching staff.

Oh, and money ALWAYS tempts players to rotten clubs. How do you think that Carlton, Melbourne and Gold Coast have attracted players? Shit, players even wanted to go to Essendon while they were being prosecuted for drug experimentation.

I know we go through this every year but where’s Aaron Francis at??

Not playing at the moment or is he injured?

if you could get the best out of him, he’s an upgrade on Kelly!
Not a need. We have plenty of defenders

I don’t disagree with you, but our defense currently has Kelly, Hartigan, and Mackay in it.

Well sort of. Worrell or Butts or McAsey should be there instead of Hartigan. We're also playing an extra defender (McPherson) who could slot back, plus Milera is out. Mackay is playing wing/midfield

So GWS look like losing which is good for us. Hopefully with the shorter season the can drop a few more games and miss finals making our pick fromthem a top 10 pick.
In an ideal world I'd like GWS to finish at least 10th or 11th. WCE to make the finals, preferably at in the 5-6 range and Geelong to finish at least top 4

Only because our selectors are too stupid to drop them.

Here’s a challenge for all you number dogs out there.

If we are going purely in a Moneyball tactic who would be the #1 clearance player (by stats) that we could get as a FA this offseason. I.e. No trade currency needed.

For argument sake take players still on their rookie contract off this list.

We had greenwood and gave him away for a bag of chips

Just came across this article. A much more diplomatic version of what Ricciuto said the other week regarding player retention.

The elephant in the room which I’m sure at some point a journalist will address or at least acknowledge when discussing the Crows and player retention over the last decade, is how exactly we were supposed to match the salaries these players were being offered elsewhere without blowing the cap. GWS have experienced similar issues.
It's the absolute opposite of what we've done historically

Yep. The article suggests we should pay big bucks to top end talent and young stars.

So that would mean keeping Lever, McGovern, Cameron, Gunston instead of guys like Mackay, Douglas, Hampton, Van Berlo

We paid top money to keep Sloane, Laird, Crouches, Walker, Lynch, Talia, etc.

We have paid to keep our top stars. We've let players go who want top stars money but aren't good enough.

It'd be nice to have Cameron, but there wasn't a number that would have kept Gunston, and Lever and McGovern obviously aren't worth it.
