I spoke too soon, the AFL in all their "wisdom" have now put 1st list lodgement back a week...

No second trade period this year

The AFL floated the idea of an extra brief trade window after acknowledging clubs had ended the player-exchange period without a definitive decision on how many players they can have on a list next year nor how much they can pay them.

With this in mind - how can we possibly justify signing Mackay to another year? Shouldn't we have waited to see what the list size would actually be??

We still have quite a number of senior players on the list despite the recent culling.

Mackay, Seedsman, Mcrouch, Laird, Sloane, Talia, Brown, Smith, Tex, Lynch and Kelly.

Not sure if there are any current A graders in that list and all of those names would be expected to play a significant amount of games in 21.

I think we needed to cut a bit deeper this year and get rid of Dmac, Kelly and Seedsman. It wouldn't have hurt us on the field at all.

A bit late now, especially for DMac who signed a contract last week (sigh).

Probably no one you'd expect to get an AA nod in a bottom 4 side, but there is a good bit of experience. Seedsman won't get many, if any games (seems very out of favour with Nicks and I was surprised to not see Paul request a trade, probably indicative that his career is coming to a quiet close), Kelly should be overtaken, though he's got the Mackays about him where our coaching group seems happy to overlook how poor of a footballer he is due to attitude. Tex I'm hoping won't get games, though I'm aware that is not likely. Rest should.

That said, we've knocked ~ 8 off our list and this isn't a draft you want to be turning over a very large portion of your list due to the level of unknown there is with a lot of prospects, so it's probably ok for now. It's a multi-year rebuild, and we're going to need people to delist next season.

Nope was being mooted not official.
And btw the AFL have put 1st list lodgements due this coming Friday back to the following Friday so pretty obviously they're still nutting it out.

I think most of us accept we got unders for him, but let's be honest now. How much of it was actually in the hope that another club would overvalue him relative to our own perception of his game, and how many of us are actually filthy or sad he'll no longer be playing for us, the way we felt when Dangerfield left?

Personally, I'm not unhappy to see him go. I feel rather relieved actually.

I would have matched as we traded our best midfielder for peanuts.

It's not like we would have been locked into a big annual salary & can still trade later.

They also needed to be careful, every main listed player drafted is a min 2 years, they can only have 4 cats A rookies, and 3 of that spot are gone, So maybe it better to also have an eye on the future and ensure we have some position available for next year. more so if the AFL is talking more list changes, we could be in a position where we need to let go of 10 players in 2021.
Yes, we can let some go earlier but we pay the price in the Cap and in 2022 that money may come in handy, ie 95% in 2021 and 2022, leave's a lot of room for some big money trades.

Mackay was extended as a thank you for the past. We don't concern ourselves with the future.

I was very impressed with the bravado that GWS displayed towards the Cats in regards to Cameron. I wish our Club had the balls to have done the same.

Not even in hindsight here, I would rather Brouch over Pick 23.

If we get a jet at 23 then we've made the best of a bad situation but we needn't have taken the risk.

Should have been done post draft - if we still have a list spot available then sure, sign him up.

Ain't no one stealing him from us at a ripe old age of 32, why not make sure no younger player of interest falls to us first before locking him in?

Talking next year

We were talking about actual anti-rebuild decisions made this year. No selection decisions have been made next year yet. But given that we will be young, don't be surprised if Mackay plays round 1 and one of Hamill, Sholl or MacPherson misses. Or Milera gets pushed forward with Stengle missing. That's how we rebuild, flat knacker for the 4 points every week.

It's hard not to when we make decisions that suggest we're not anchored there. Just because our list is young doesn't mean we won't continue to play out of form or poorly performing injured senior players. Just because we're young doesn't mean we'll rebuild properly. For that to happen we need a change in selection philosophy, I've provided clear examples that contradict that having occurred. We will see, but we've not turned the corner yet.

Like life, you are not what you are for getting the 99 easy decision right, it's continually ****ing up the slightly more difficult call that is the true you.
