It's a status thing. He's earned a spot on the senior list through tenure, even if it has no bearing on anything other than opening up a spot for a draft slider, we won't do it. It would be a decent step forward if we did. No downside, small potential for upside, meaningless optics ignored. But can we ignore meaningless optics.
I think we want rookie list spots more than we want main list spots.

If we have someone we can keep on a one year contract on the main list, we're better off doing that and signing a one year rookie than we are taking someone late in the main draft and having them for two years.

Now, if we could grab GCS's pick 25 for not much, then it's be worth it. But it's not worth it to grab someone at 50.

I think we take four picks, and it depends where Borlase goes.

Ideal for us is 31 plus Hately plus 4 picks.

Then we take three rookie picks to add to the three we have, and have Borlase and Newchurch as Cat B's.

36+6+2.

Actually - I probably WOULD look to move Mackay to the rookie list. It gives us a lot more flexibility. There should be the chance to position ourselves for a good fifth pick.

Just with the rumour we are interested in Mitch Hinge from Brisbane - my question is why?!
He's a 190cm defender. Isn't that exactly what Borlase will be? Do we need another one?
I agree, unless we want him to be something else, or we want Doedee to move into a new role.

I think he'll be a depth option, but he's not exactly a need

We'll have been creaming ourselves over what we did with Keays

About the one thing that went right in the last three years

I imagine we'll go back to that well rather than dip further into the draft

Honestly never heard of him - what do people think?

Does filling a list spot this way free up a draft pick that we can use to move up the order or into next year?
He fills a position on the senior list, reducing our vacancies from 7 to 6 (6 to 5 if you count Hately). I'm not sure how that "frees up a draft pick"?

The problem with that is it overrates Keays.

Don't get me wrong, he was almost the only player that could hold his head high in the first month or two back from the Covid break. He is however a very limited player. His skills are fairly ordinary. He's just a good trier. Look at his form in the last 6 weeks of the season to see the norm.

Players like Borlase might not make it, but might have a higher ceiling than a guy like Keays. I hope we don't think Hinge can be Keays like rather than have a greater scope.

One thing is for sure, if Keays is still getting a game in 18 months time, we are in all sorts of trouble as a club.

That's what I'm wondering ie how many picks are we likely to use, how many senior list spots are we likely to go with? Does picking up a DFA mean that we're more likely to try to trade 2 picks up for 1 earlier pick since we have one fewer list spot to fill?

Be aware Hinge is a rebounding HBF or midfielder, he isn't suited to playing 3rd tall. Has a decent disposal on him. I don't know what sort of player Borlase is, but Hinge will have a more mature body so he can go straight into the 22.

Why are we in trouble if he’s still getting a game then? He was pick 23 in his draft year, not some battler barely scraping onto a list. Players like Keays can play important roles in any contending side (de Boer is a good example of a similar type player). If he’s our best mid in 18 months then I agree we are in trouble, but playing as the 4th or 5th mid in a contending side seems well within his reach.

I'm not sure WTF the club thinks it's doing. The news about Hinge came from nowhere.

The only thing which makes sense would be moving a player like Mackay/Seedsman/Davis, who has no future at the club beyond 2021, onto the rookie list (as per the AFL's announcement yesterday). That would free up a senior list position for signing a DFA (i.e. Hinge).

Make the MacKay resigning look bad.

Surely we are going to use pick 40? And with Hinge WTF have we kept Mackay? Betts has moved to rookie list, Mackay bloody better
Why would we use pick 40? The club has said that they will be making 4 selections, and we currently have 4 picks inside the top-25 (before bidding wars push them down closer to 30).

Right now pick 40 is a liability, which we need to trade out.

We have some dead wood to clear in 2021. Also, we have Smith off contract next year I think. I also reckon the club might be looking to move Scholl and Hamill up the ground. Clearly we don't rate this draft highly, looks like 3 main draft picks now.

Pick 40 on Borlase
