Daniher could be at the Den by Friday (Sam McClure and Michael Gleeson, The Age, 28/10)

Joe Daniher could be a Brisbane Lions player as early as Friday morning, with parties to the deal confident of a smooth move for the free agent.

Sources close to the discussions are confident the Lions' contract offer to Daniher will draw a first-round compensation pick – currently pick seven – for the full-forward.

If the compensation is of that level it is more likely than not the Bombers would accept the pick and move on. The free agency window opens this Friday when clubs such as Essendon can learn of the offer for their player, discover what the compensation will be and then make a decision.

Daniher was already on a high contract at Essendon and terms comparable to what he has been on would put Essendon in the frame for first-round draft pick as compensation.

The Lions are confident and hopeful the contract is sufficient to avoid a messy trade.

Joe Daniher deal with Brisbane Lions looks set to leave Essendon with a first-round compensation pick (Jay Clark and Jon Ralph, News Corp, 28/10)

Essendon looks set to receive the first-round compensation pick it craves to release spearhead Joe Daniher to Brisbane.
More than 12 months after Daniher tried to move to Sydney Swans, the goalkicker will secure the fresh start he wanted under coach Chris Fagan at the Lions.

Importantly, the Lions look set to pay him in excess of $700,000 a season which will net the Bombers pick No. 7 in the draft under free agency compensation rules.

If the salary does not meet the first-round compensation trigger, Essendon will match the free agency bid which will force a trade.

Brisbane will lodge its bid on Friday when free agency opens.

The Lions are in a great spot to challenge for a premiership next year after list manager Dom Ambrogio has helped spearhead deals for Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale and now Daniher.

While the Bombers have three days to match, they will not match if the compensation nets them a first-round pick.

Sam Edmund's Trade Update on Crouch, Higgins, Daniher, Dunstan and More (Sam Edmund, SEN, 30/10)

Joe Daniher (Essendon)

“It was reported yesterday that the Lions now in fact will offer him this deal worth $700,000 a year and on face value, that is pick seven as compensation which they want and have demanded.

“Speaking to a few player agents yesterday afternoon, they were convinced that Brisbane’s offer was sitting somewhere around the $600k which wouldn’t get them pick seven as they want."

Daniher’s manager says his client agonised over his departure (Jon Ralph, The Australian, 30/10)

Essendon hit the free agency jackpot on Friday night securing the No 7 overall pick for Joe Daniher after the Brisbane Lions offered a three-year deal with around $2.5m of guaranteed money.

Daniher’s manager Nigel Carmody said the 26-year-old had agonised over the decision given his mateships at Essendon and his family’s history at the club.
Brisbane football boss David Noble said the Lions would back themselves to keep injury-plagued Daniher on the park.

He also has incentive-based clauses to hand him a bigger deal and will come out of contract again at 29, with the guaranteed money ticked off by the AFL’s first-round compensation.

The Lions had to calculate a deal that would put him in the club’s top five per cent of paid players and were happy to sidestep 10 days of torturous haggling over a trade by elevating their three-year deal.

WHAT THEY NEED
A key forward to play alongside Eric Hipwood has already been secured, with Joe Daniher joining the club from Essendon as a free agent. Hipwood kicked 24 goals and Dan McStay 11, so providing Daniher can stay fit he could be the key target they need inside 50m.

WHO THEY’RE CHASING
Having landed Daniher on a three-year deal as soon as free agency opened, the Lions are also believed to be keen on adding some spice to their midfield mix and have been linked to Nakia Cockatoo from Geelong, who would bring pace and flair to the engine room.

WHO THEY’LL LOSE
Cedric Cox
is seeking a move home to WA after playing 13 games in three seasons with the Lions. The No. 24 draft pick from 2016 has not indicated whether his preference is to join West Coast or Fremantle if a deal can be done, but he is out of contract. The Lions have also delisted Archie Smith, who is exploring his options but will be re-rookied if he doesn’t find a new home.

Eagles flag interest in out-of-favour young gun (Callum Twomey, AFL.com.au, 02/11)

WEST Coast has signaled its interest in trading for Brisbane defender Alex Witherden after the half-back was squeezed out of the Lions' finals side.

Witherden has two years to run on his deal with the Lions but is understood to be on the Eagles' radar as they look to add more youth to their half-back line with Shannon Hurn set to enter the final year of his career in 2021.

The 22-year-old is settled in Queensland and is not pushing for a trade however found opportunities limited this season with the arrival of Grant Birchall and Callum Ah Chee in the Lions' defence.

The Lions last week confirmed their commitment to Witherden, who quickly extended his contract through to the end of 2022 in the middle of last year.

The Age - day 1 live blog (Peter Ryan, The Age, 4/11)

Geelong and the Brisbane Lions have begun to negotiate a deal that would see Nakia Cockatoo join the Lions in 2021 after an injury-riddled six seasons at the Cats.

Sources close to the preliminary discussions said the Lions, who hold picks 18, 19, 42 and 69 in this year's draft, thought a deal similar to the one struck when Lincoln McCarthy left Geelong for Brisbane at the end of 2018 would suffice.

In that deal, Geelong traded McCarthy and picks 54 and 57 in exchange for pick 42 and 60. But with a changed draft landscape the Cats think the 23-year-old Cockatoo, who was pick 10 in the 2014 national draft, commands a greater return and are prepared to wait to see what unfolds.

BRISBANE free agent Stefan Martin faces a decision on his future as the ruckman weighs interest from the Western Bulldogs.

Martin, who remains without a deal from the Lions as the free agency period draws to a close on Friday, has attracted interest from the Bulldogs who are searching for a ruck partner for Tim English.
Much-loved Lion Ryan Lester is hoping to land a two-year deal after becoming a key part of Brisbane’s back line, while Geelong has offered Lachie Henderson a new deal that is expected to be soon finalised.

Geelong in talks over Higgins plus the latest on Cockatoo, Narkle, Parfitt and Ratugolea (Alex Zaia, SEN, 05/11)

Speaking on AFL Trade Radio’s The Late Trade, Wells also provided updates on Nakia Cockatoo, Quinton Narkle, Brandon Parfitt and Esava Ratugolea.
"Nakia is out of contract – although we’ve offered him a new contract – we’ll be happy for Nakia to stay at our club.

"But at the moment he has expressed a desire to try and get to Brisbane if he can, but he understands if a deal’s not done (then) he’s got a home here in Geelong and we hope for a change of luck with his injuries.

"Whenever Nakia has played for us he’s been exciting, and I think he’s a difference maker as a player. If he does get his body right, he will make a big difference to hopefully Geelong.

Make me a Bomber, says Dunkley, as Bulldogs secure back-up ruckman (Jake Niall, Michael Gleeson, Peter Ryan and Daniel Cherny, The Age, 05/11)

The Western Bulldogs have secured a support ruckman but now face a dilemma over what to do about premiership midfielder Josh Dunkley who has officially told the club he wants out.

Athletic Brisbane Lions ruckman Stefan Martin is set to join the Bulldogs as much-needed support for talented young ruck Tim English whom the Dogs admitted needed a seasoned ruckman to help shoulder the ruck burden in a long season.

The 33-year-old uncontracted player is expected to be a cheap trade. He would have been eligible for free agency, having served eight years at the Lions, but the free agency deadline is a day away. A trade is required unless he is delisted and able to move as a delisted free agent.
A trade for Geelong speedster Nakia Cockatoo - who wants to head to Brisbane - has been complicated somewhat by the Lions' need to keep draft points for several of their academy prospects including Blake Coleman, the younger brother of Lions goalsneak Keidean Coleman.

Moneyball: Latest AFL trade news and whispers (Jay Clark, News Corp, 06/11)

Carlton is considering a major pick swap surprise by trading out its No.8 pick to Brisbane Lions.

In a blow to Essendon, the Blues are contemplating sending pick No.8 to the Lions in return for picks No.18 and No.19.
The Blues would also boost their draft points by swapping pick No.8 (1551 points) for No.18 and No.19 (1933 points combined).

The move could also be a strong result for the Lions in a compromised draft year as it would see Brisbane rise up the national draft order by 10 places.

The move would give the Lions a shot at securing one of the most coveted teenagers in the country as they mount a genuine premiership bid next season.

Mitch Cleary's trade update on Martin, Mundy plus the latest on both Dunkley brothers (SEN, 06/11)

Stefan Martin

“I think the Dogs are really keen and they’re exploring this one.

“He is an unrestricted free agent so the Lions will have to let him walk.

“The Dogs actually had interest in him after Luke Beveridge’s first season – the one they wanted was Ben McEvoy because they like the flexibility of playing back as well as being able to take a mark up forward.

“I think Martin plays for the Dogs next year.”

Inside Trading: The 19 deals in play with four days to go (Callum Twomey and Nathan Schmook, 08/11)

Alex Witherden

The Eagles are keen on Witherden, who dropped out of the Lions' side this year with the acquisition of Grant Birchall and Callum Ah Chee. The complication is Witherden has two years to run on his contract with Brisbane and hasn't requested a trade to West Coast. Brisbane is unlikely to use many picks at this year's national draft with a tight list, so the Eagles may need to dip into their future picks to get a deal over the line.
Stefan Martin

The Brisbane big man is set to join the Bulldogs and provide support for young ruckman Tim English. The uncontracted Martin could have joined the Bulldogs as a free agent before Friday's deadline but now must move either in a bargain trade or as a delisted free agent.
