Note that just because I post a story here doesn't mean I don't think it's probably rubbish (Denham, Ralphy, Waldron etc.) but it's worthwhile having a place to keep these stories together.

Cats show interest in picking up Daniher (Jake Niall, The Age, 14/09)

Geelong is among the clubs to have expressed interest in Essendon star forward and free agent Joe Daniher.

The Cats and the Brisbane Lions are two of the clubs that have shown interest in Daniher, whom sources said remained undecided about his future and whether he will remain with Essendon next year, having sought a trade to the Swans last year.

LIONS OPEN TO ANYTHING WITH STRONG DRAFT HAND

Brisbane remains open to either using or trading its two first-round selections, with recruiting manager Stephen Conole saying is prepared to be “fluid” with is juicy draft hand.

The Lions enter the 2020 draft armed with two early picks. Not only do they hold their own natural selection, they are also attached to Port Adelaide’s first-round pick.

However as the Lions sit third on the ladder and the Power first, it means their selections currently sit at Picks 18 and 20.

Speaking on AFL Media’s ‘Road To The Draft’ podcast, Conole said the Lions would be flexible around its decision on the two early selections.

“Whether or not (we use them), there’s so much water under the bridge until draft day through trade period,” Conole told ‘Road To The Draft’.

“We’re really open to using them or trading them – I don’t think we’ve got to a stage yet where we’re working through final decisions on any of that. Dom Ambrogio our list manager will spend a lot of time prior to the draft working through all those scenarios.

“But if we do happen to go to the draft with them, I’m very confident we’ll head into there and have a really good feel of the first round of the draft and confident, if we used both of those picks, that we pick players that come into our footy club and have a real impact.”

Asked if the club would consider packing up the picks to move further up the draft order, Conole said: “For sure.

“To move further up, back – I think we’d be open to any sort of discussion there. We’re always pretty fluid with that.

“I think we’ve traded really well the last few seasons and I think we’d be really open to it.”

The Lions are strong chances to finish inside the top four at season’s end.

Despite their strong position, Conole said their list could still be bolstered across all areas of the ground.

“In terms of saying ‘we’re going to put all our energies into one specific area’, we haven’t got to that stage,” Conole said. “But we’ve got some holes in each of the parts of the ground that we’d like to continue to develop and add depth to and plug some players in that we think can help us in the short-term and the long-term.

“We’ve got some big decisions to make coming up on the types of players that we target … but as a rule, we draft for talent. We’ll probably continue that somewhat and continue to add some talented boys onto our list that can really assist us.”

Four-club AFL trade race begins to poach Xavier O’Halloran from the Giants (Tom Morris, Fox Sports, 07/09)

Out-of-contract Giant Xavier O’Halloran has attracted attention from four clubs looking to top up their midfield stocks in the trade period.

With less than two weeks remaining before the end of the home and away season, clubs believe the 20-year-old is gettable and are preparing to jostle for his signature.

Foxfooty.com.au understands Geelong, Brisbane, Essendon and the Western Bulldogs are interested in bringing in the former No. 22 draft pick.

The Cats and Lions are the other two clubs to have expressed interest in O’Halloran. Both have established midfields but believe they would benefit from another young on-baller with two pre-seasons under his belt already.

Nakia Cockatoo appears headed towards a multi-year deal at Brisbane as he seeks security after just two AFL games in three seasons at the Cats.

The wildly talented No. 10 draft pick has played just 34 AFL games and returned to Geelong for wrist surgery on Thursday.

His partner Grace is also expecting their first baby, with continuing talks underway between the Cats and Cockatoo about his future.

But the Herald Sun understands the security of a contract longer than a season on a base wage appears irresistible as he follows the pathway trodden by ex-Cat Lincoln McCarthy.

The Lions secured McCarthy for a late pick swap after years of injuries and he kicked 20 goals last season, playing 24 games after only five in the previous two seasons.

Geelong cannot yet guarantee him a list spot given the potential for lists to shrink.

But he has multiple suitors given his explosive pace and power that is untapped at only 23 given his recurring hamstring problems.

REPORT: INJURY-PRONE CATS MIDFIELDER SET TO TAKE UP RIVAL OFFER (SEN Website Article 16/09/20)

Injury-prone Geelong midfielder Nakia Cockatoo is likely to leave the club and take up a multi-year deal at Brisbane, according to the Herald Sun. The out-of-contract 23-year-old has played just 34 games for Geelong after battling several knee and soft tissues injuries and is likely to move as he seeks longer-term security.

The report states that he appears all but certain to take up the “irresistible” contract from the Lions, with Geelong still undecided on his future with the make up of list sizes in 2021 currently unknown. Cockatoo was taken with pick 10 in the 2014 National Draft and is widely known as a player blessed with pace in the midfield.

Essendon restricted free agent Joe Daniher is poised to tour Brisbane’s training facilities in the coming weeks, according to SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund.

“I think we all think Joe Daniher is on the move,” he said on SEN Mornings.

“Is it Brisbane or is it Sydney? Depends on who you speak to, but the latest scuttlebutt has him touring the Brisbane Lions facilities very, very soon.

Brisbane Lions’ history of career revivals set to tempt Essendon free agent Joe Daniher (Sam Landsberger and Nick Smart, Herald Sun, 23/09)

Brisbane’s medical miracle team has emerged as the wildcard in the race to sign Essendon superstar Joe Daniher.

News Corp can reveal that Daniher has reached out to multiple Lions to inquire about the club’s facilitates and rehabilitation programs.

Daniher, 26, was spotted in the Brisbane CBD on Wednesday although it is understood he cannot complete a tour of the club’s Gabba base because he is no longer in the AFL bubble.

The Bombers have checked out of their Novotel Twin Waters hub on the Sunshine Coast and therefore they cannot be in contact with any player or official still in the premiership race and in their club’s bubble.

Daniher has enjoyed Queensland’s warm weather this season, which has also helped his body recover from games.

The Bombers currently hold the No. 6 draft pick and would pocket No. 7 if Daniher leaves as a restricted free agent on a fat contract.

Daniher has missed 47 games through injury since his All-Australian season in 2017.

The Lions’ experienced medicos received glowing endorsements when Daniher sought feedback and, unlike the Bombers, they are gearing up for another finals series.

High performance boss Damien Austin also plays a crucial role and the Lions are hoping Daniher and possibly Nakia Cockatoo and Quinton Narkle (Geelong) are their next success stories.

Destined to land in Brisbane and follow the lead of former teammate Lincoln McCarthy who turned his body around up north. The Lions have held an interest in the explosive Cockatoo for some time and will back their medical team to get him on the park after two games in three seasons. Like the deal for McCarthy, the Cats won't dig their heels in at the trade table.

JOE DANIHER (ESS)

Draft picks: First-round / end-of-first-round compensation pick
Value on open market: $700,000-800,000 per season

Looms as the most fascinating contract of all restricted free agents. Provided there's several suitors, Daniher will have no problems in securing a sizeable contract. But it's the length of term that will concern some given his body history and the fact he's played 15 games in three seasons. As reported by AFL.com.au this week, Essendon is prepared to offer up to four years. But if a rival – such as Brisbane, Sydney or Geelong – comes with something similar and the Bombers are only headed for an end-of-first-round compensation, do they match the bid and force a trade?

Value on open market: $300,000-400,000

Missed just two games across 2018-2019 but has been reduced to six matches this campaign with youngster Brandon Starcevich and recruits Grant Birchall and Callum Ah Chee picked ahead of him. Has two years to run on his current deal, and while the Lions won't want to lose him, Victorian clubs are already lining up for the 22-year-old who has proven himself as an astute ball user out of the back half.

BRISBANE LIONS

Remember when players couldn’t get out of Brisbane quick enough? It’s a distant memory now, as Chris Fagan and his side have transformed themselves into a destination club. If Joe Daniher leaves Essendon, it’s the Lions who look the frontrunners at the moment. They have the cap space, the lifestyle and the good medical track record Daniher would be searching for. There’s been some chatter of Ben Brown as a potential pick up, but his suitors in Victoria would leave him far less likely to head interstate than Daniher, who is bursting to get out of the Victorian footy fishbowl. Through good list management, the Lions have some genuine cap space to play with, which could allow them to go after Jeremy Cameron, even though it seems the Giant will either stay put or head to the Cats. Speaking of the Cats, expect luckless speedster Nakia Cockatoo to join the Lions at year’s end, with the 23-year-old and former Pick 10 to join former teammate Lincoln McCarthy in the hope of a similar resurgence. Out-of-contract Giants midfielder Xavier O’Halloran is also in the sights of the Lions, with the 20-year-old a likely casualty of GWS’ cap squeeze if they manage to keep Jeremy Cameron.

With the game’s best key forwards generally commanding some of the biggest contracts, Browne reports Cameron’s manager “is now going to have to consider going to market” or settle on the Giants’ offer.

“There’s no doubt clubs - including Geelong, Brisbane and Essendon - will be lining up with interest if (Cameron) wants to leave,” Browne reported.

The Cats and Lions have both registered interest in Bombers forward Joe Daniher, who has appeared most likely to land in Brisbane.

Essendon would wave goodbye to Daniher with their best wishes if they were able to lure Cameron south.
