Lions’ New Offer for Cockatoo as Martin Move Looms (Fox Sports, 10/11)

Brisbane has offered a future third-round selection for Nakia Cockatoo.

Geelong is currently weighing up its options after asking for more than pick 53 in this year’s draft a earlier in the week.

The Cats offered Cockatoo a one-year deal on basic money, while the Lions have proposed a two-season contract.

Cockatoo, the former No. 10 draft selection, appears destined for the Lions, but Cats list boss Stephen Wells is trying to get a higher pick from his opposite number Dom Ambrogio.

Sources confirmed there has been progress in the last 24 hours, despite Geelong stating it would be happy to keep Cockatoo if a deal could not be arranged.

A deal was expected to be completed earlier in the trade period, but the main stumbling block has been Brisbane’s lack of picks between No. 19 and No. 53.

The club is also aiming to keep a few later selections for academy prospects and does not believe Cockatoo is worthy of a first rounder.

Trade paperwork lodged.

The Geelong Cats trade Nakia Cockatoo to the Brisbane Lions for its Future Round Three Selection (currently tied to Melbourne).

LIVE: Trade chaos! Saad deal DOES go through after late scare as Swan requests move (Tom Morris and David Zita, 11/11)

STICKING POINT IN LION’S EAGLES WISH - 1PM

Tom Morris reports ...

Lions defender Alex Witherden’s slated move to West Coast is in limbo despite the two clubs essentially agreeing on his trade value.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the size of his contract and who pays for it is the sticking point and increases the chances of the 22-year-old remaining in Queensland.

Witherden has two years remaining on a Brisbane contract worth more than what West Coast is willing to pay.

The former Geelong Falcon is assessing whether he would be willing to accept a significant wage reduction, or stay at the Lions where he loves his teammates and the club and fight for a place in Chris Fagan’s best 22.

There remains an outside chance Brisbane could pay a small portion of his salary, though the financial split between the Eagles and Lions remains a point of discussion on the penultimate day of the trade period.

Withdern’s manager Nick Gieschan has a central role to play in orchestrating a trade if Witherden decides to leave, just as John Meesen and Marty Pask acted as mediators between Essendon and Carlton on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

If Witherden was traded to Brisbane, it’s understood he would sign a two-year deal.

The defender has played 59 games since debuting in 2017.

Jon Ralph: Essendon has some interest in Mitch Hinge, a running 190cm defender from the Lions but he is staying put. Lots of names being thrown around

Inside Trading: The 15 deals that will shape deadline day (Riley Beveridge, Mitch Cleary and Nathan Schmook, AFL.com.au, 11/11)

Josh Dunkley

Trade talks remain at a standstill for Dunkley. The Western Bulldogs will hold out for two top-end first-round picks for the contracted midfielder, with Essendon currently in possession of picks No.6, 7 and 8. The Bombers have asked the Lions whether they will split selections, but would the Dogs consider either picks No.18 or 19 as part of the deal? The Dogs are keen on Magpies star Adam Treloar, but insist their interest isn't linked to Dunkley's potential departure and are adamant they could end the Trade Period with both Dunkley and Treloar on their list. – Riley Beveridge

Alex Witherden

The 22-year-old faces a decision between better financial terms at Brisbane or increased playing opportunities at West Coast. The Lions have offered to pay a portion of Witherden's salary next year if he joins the Eagles, but it is understood there is a shortfall when West Coast's offer is combined with the figure Brisbane is prepared to pay. A trade would help the Lions by freeing up an important list spot and salary cap space, while the Eagles are also keen to move ahead with the deal to secure backline depth as premiership captain Shannon Hurn approaches the end of his career. – Nathan Schmook

Nick Hind

Essendon is keen on the uncontracted speedster, though St Kilda is still hopeful he opts to remain at the club in 2021 and beyond. The Bombers are understood to have offered a later pick in an effort to tempt the Saints to organise a trade, though talks are ongoing. Essendon has shown some interest in Brisbane's uncontracted defender Mitch Hinge recently, with both Hind and Hinge waiting on list sizes before being offered new deals at their respective clubs. Could the Lion be an alternative, should Hind opt to remain a Saint? – Riley Beveridge

Ryan Daniels: Alex Witherden will end up at @WestCoastEagles tomorrow.
Clubs have agreed on a trade, now @brisbanelions and Withderden’s management are sorting contract details - how much Lions are willing to cover.
Was a difficult final hurdle but key parties are very confident it gets done.

Ryan Daniels: Trade will NOT include the future second round pick the Eagles acquired today in Tom Hickey deal.

Trade helps Lions clear list and cap space, Eagles get their man.

AFL trade news, rumours, whispers 2020: Deadline day preview, state of play, trades left to happen, when does the trade period end? (Max Laughton, Fox Sports, 12/11)

Alex Witherden (Brisbane Lions)

Torn between whether to stay at Brisbane and fight for his spot, or take up greater opportunities at West Coast. The teams have essentially agreed on his trade value, reports Foxfooty.com.au’s Tom Morris, but it’s about the 22-year-old’s contract. Witherden has two years left on a deal larger than the Eagles are willing to pay, so it’s whether he would accept a reasonable pay cut, or if Brisbane could even pay a portion of his new deal.

Cedric Cox (Brisbane Lions)

Has requested a trade home to Western Australia to family reasons, but there’s been no clear indication of any interest from either Fremantle or West Coast.

Tim Gossage: The Eagles are keen on Alex Witherden but it’s his people who are pushing for him leave Brisbane for WA. Not sure West Coast will pay what they’re asking so he may have give ground if he wants the deal done by deadline time.
