Some of the people on here are willing to give up Gresham and a pick for Taranto. I have never seen him play a very good game yet. Gresham has played quite a few.
Taranto is being over valued while Gresh is being under valued.

I don't think anyone wants Gresham gone. Just entertaining the idea of what the club might be thinking. I love Gresh, he's a favourite but Taranto is way out in front of him Barry. He's a year younger but ahead on just about every metric. Ideally you'd have both.

Zero coincidence that when Gresh went out, our midfield lost its way. I'm not saying he doesn't spend time forward but he's a 75/25 mid, not a forward pocket like many suggest.

He's probably our best inside mid and we don't have any cover apart from Dunstan who was injured at the same time. I still prefer him playing 70% forward. More like De Goey or Grey. He seems to have bursts of impact and that way you can keep him fresh.

Tarantos average game in 2019 as a 21 year old was 27 disposals, 5.2 clearances. Gresham could only dream about those numbers. Yeah, stats are not everything but you throw in the guy has elite disposal and they have to mean something.

He's an inside mid so his disposal efficiency isn't beautiful but he's a proper gun player and still young enough that he could be something pretty special. I imagine without the rest of GWS' mids around his numbers probably inflate as well.

Just checked, Martin and Bontimpelli numbers were not remotely close to Tarantos at 21 although Bont did kick a lot more goals

In your 'numbers' have you accounted for the different game styles that teams play?

The Giants for example play a slowed down, possession heavy game whereas the Tigers go forward at all opportunities. The Dogs are handball happy at times and our game plan this season has been kick and play on focused.

Using raw stats like disposal numbers is a very inexact way of measuring a player's value.

Getting B.Ronke from Sydney instead of Higgins would be a lower cost. I know we have only seen glimpses of talent from Ronke, but geezuz, any small forward who can kick 7 goals in a match, deserves thought.

I have only ever noticed him in that one game though. He must be pretty average most of the time.

Also, isnt Rath meant to be very good at fixing kicking techniques?

But you also wanted to give them this years first as well so i have no idea why you asked that question

Because if you answer yes to that question I would assume you rate Taranto higher than Gresham and your objection to the trade is the first round pick, likely pick 14. So if we are differing over the the fairness of the trade it is predominantly about the value of pick 14 in a hugely compromised draft.

If you answer no to the question then we are more fundamentally apart in our opinions.

No I am not being overly forensic. It is all just hypotheticals and people have different opinions. I have no idea if Taranto will end up as good as Martin and Bontimpelli but his stats last year suggest he is the discussion and throw in the fact that he won a BnF in the runner up team at age 21 and it gives more weight.

Put simply, he looks to be a really special player, he is ticking off things that only special players do and he is doing it very young. You don't get a lot of opportunities at someone like this but if the opportunity is real, Saints should not leave any questions unanswered.

Pick 14 maybe compromised but id rather have it than have our first pick at 40 or what ever it is , there are plenty of good kids out there that will be available , just need to do the homework

Harder than ever this year. 18 top picks already aligned with clubs and no exposed form on the Victorian kids. If there is an opportunity to trade picks for players this is probably a good year to do it.

There are still some good mids in the pool and a couple of talls going early helps one of the good ones slide through. The mids are always safer bets than talls who often show their best form in their final year.

Taranto does not have elite disposal.

Kicks @ 48% efficiency in 2018 and 2019, 43% this year. Important to note he kicks a lot more than he handballs though whereas in our side I’d expect him to handball more to Hill, Billings etc rather than somehow being the designated kicker that his stats suggest he is at GWS (they lack outside runners). Last year in his 721 disposal year, 431 kicks/290 handballs. Surely we’d aim to get him at a more 50/50 split with us so that his kicks are mostly clearances and deep 50 entries rather then trying to pull off kicks outside of his ability.

Compare Taranto’s ~48% kicking efficiency to Gresham’s ~52% this year who gets bagged for his kicking on here.

Let’s not pretend Taranto is perfect, we should all prepare him to butcher it at times based on these numbers. But if utilised properly in almost a pure inside role with Steele as the bulls I suspect his kicking efficiency would lift up a bit to where most of the other inside mids sit, and his benefits would far outweigh the negatives due to his strong contested and clearance work.
Steele has a good DE history, Gresham is too important a forward goal kicker to let go. Billings, Dunstan or Ross are the one's I would throw up at GWS. All 3 make poor decisions & shank their disposal too often & go missing in bigger games. Just hopefully GWS don't know that.

Gresham needs space to do his best work, he is not Zorko nor Neale who despite being small can play the inside mid job consistently.. 25%-50% midfield time is about right.. this would suit GWS who has a deep midfield but lack small forward magic.. win win.

So your saying? just because Butler has come along, Gresham is expendable, Mad. With trading in more midfielder's, a small forward line of Butler, Gresham & Ronke ;), would be superb.
