Getting a mid for the now (Tarantula or Brayshaw) plus a mid for the future (Caldwell) would set us up perfectly. The other immediate gap we need to fill is a key back, assuming Carlisle departs.

Our trade assets include 2020 1st & 2021 1st & could include whatever we get for Carlisle, Lonie & Dunstan (if they leave). Would that be enough to get both Caldwell & Taranto?!

Most would put Caldwell in the pick 15-25 range. Just so happens that we will have a pick closer to 15. If we finished bottom 4 that our 2nd rounder would be suitable. Not to mention the extremely compromised draft which makes our first pick fair compensation. We can’t look at our first pick like a first rounder because it is actually closer to a second rounder that we’ve been use to over the last decade - because we’ve been a basket case finishing towards the bottom of the ladder.
Who are some decent out of contract KPD’s?

Talia too old, Corr going to North etc

Clavarino seems like a third tall interceptor ala Lever

I rate Joyce not sure if the club do though - Austin can’t actually defend which is an issue

I think Gags has another Wilkie lined up. Doubt he’s looking at any AFL rejects. And we don’t have the picks to get an established AFL gun defender (Moore would be perfect).

In gags we trust

Drums are beating re Caldwell. Sounds very likely indeed :thumbsu:

Starting mids = Steele, Clark, Gresh/Caldwell next year?

If we bring Caldwell in my hope is that he would take a lot of Gresh's mifield minutes. I feel like Gresh and Billings have been transformed from dangerous, x-factor types to accumulators with their moves to the midfield. Gresh needs to sort out his set shot kicking, but if he can get that to an acceptable standard I would rather see him have a 70/30 split between forward and midfield.

I know on paper he is one of our best clearance players, but I feel the fact that he take the quick advantage in the centre square a fair bit. I think for genuine, in play clearances he is a bit overrated and for how skillful we know he can be, he isn't too far off Ross in terms of how haphazard the clearance kicks are.

I rather see Billings and Gresham back on the forward flanks, solving our rotating 6th forward problem and then look at having Caldwell play the 2019-2020 Gresham role, and if we really want that hard running accumulator on the opposite wing to Hill, I reckon we could get Tom Phillips from the pies pretty cheaply and he would offer every bit as much as Billings does in that role.

Agreed although I’d argue Gresh’s clearance work/getting through traffic is as good as anyone’s on our list IMO - good problem to have either way

Don’t mind the Phillips call - he would be cheap as pies cap is nearly at max - bit vanilla but would fill a role & can run all day like Ed

Seems a strange target for them when they have so many similar mids.

Stinks of more desperation for Dodoro
Dodo just stinks all round..

Let’s not get it twisted bro

Bombers having a late crack at Caldwell
That’s equivalent to trying to chat up a 9/10 as she leaves the club on the arm of a handsome stud, after you’ve just vomited all over yourself and smashed your drink to the surrounding patrons’ utter dismay.
They’ll be looked at with a mixture of pity, disgust, but mostly - indifference.

I think that's a bit too simple.
You need to look at age and improvement Vs projected premiership window.

In your scenario I'd think it's Seb that would need fo find a new position, but his ball use precludes that.
The roll Ratts has him playing atm is now working well, but if we get a clearance beast in, then Steele can do the Ross roll better than Ross does and so on.

Since Seb has a good value and is on a good wicket, and we have 2 elite juniors to feed in to the midfield, you can trade him to improve another area of the list like a CHB or small forward.

I'm not bashing Seb here, l just think that's the way it would go.

I agree that Kent should be squeezed out, but l doubt it's by Gresh for positional reasons.

Essentially, if we bolster the top of our midfield with Taranto, and need to bring in Caldwell and Bytel (which we do) then the squeeze is on in both directions.
1.Taranto
2.Steele
3.Jones
4.Gresh
5.ROSS (trade)
6.Sincs
7.Caldwell
8.Bytel
9.Byrnes
10.DUNNY (trade)
11.Kent (trade/delist/depth)
Why have you listed Kent who plays exclusively as a forward on a list with only midfielders?
