Did hear on the trade segment on SEN today that Bombers are chasing Caldwell hard. Apparently for him it’s not about the money but opportunity to play. They mentioned it’s either GWS, Bombers or us but that he wasn’t terribly convinced after his exit interview at the Giants.
So, if we’ve convinced him he’s likely to get plenty of opportunity to play, surely it’s a no-brainer he picks us?
Merrett has already been pushed out the wing.

How many manlets do they want in their midfield?

Merrett, Shiel, Smith, Parish, McGrath

Most Saints fans would assume Bytel will be better than Byrnes because he was higher rated as a junior. It means fu** all once you're drafted. Saints gave Danny Mack a 4 year deal doesn't mean he'll be a gun. I rate Caldwell as a prospect just don't want to stump up top dollar for a developing mid. Otherwise we might as well draft Macrae's brother and develop him ourselves. Jye has had a pretty injury prone start to his career.
I'm talking about who has performed better this year, not who was taken higher in the draft.

I’m not a hately fan to be honest.

Nothing against the kid I just thought at the championships he had a bit of the Luke dunstan feel to him. He was very good but skills weren’t great, lacked a bit of athleticism and pace to my eye.

Just had a quick peak at his combine and apparently he didn’t impress so I’m sticking with my what you see is all you’ll get, a good honest, big inside mid.

Pretty much how I saw Danger and Cripps then.

Does seem to be a strange fit. For him as well. Despite Essendon's low prosects and our good season, he's no more likely to get ahead of those midfielders than he is ours.

Unless Caldwell takes a ginormous step up over the off season, he wouldnt be close to being a starting midfielder next year. At least not if we want to continuing being up the top of the ladder.

He is a mid for a few years time. Not one we should be putting our hopes on to help us improve next year.
He going to have to contend with my boy Byrnes as well as Bytel to get a spot , maybe Seb does go to the Bummers ?

Why have you listed Kent who plays exclusively as a forward on a list with only midfielders?
Because he's allegedly there because he can do stints through the middle, and I wanted to address the OP and provide context as to his place in the overall pecking order.

If we're to improve the midfield with quality and numbers, then we have someone resting forward, which puts more pressure on Kent's place.

I have deliberately watched Caldwell as much as I could this year. He's not done much. Hately hasn't either but he's done some really nice passages of play that looked like he was the better player at this point to me. If you take out their junior form Hates looks closer to best 22.

I've watched closely too and clearly we disagree.

Hately was good in his first game playing very loose off half back but has not shown as much as Caldwell IMO who has at least shown he can win the footy in tight and is good in traffic.

Clearly the Giants match committee disagree on who they think is closer to best 22 considering Caldwell played 50% more games.

I think that's why Hately is leaving, he's a pure inside mid playing a variety of unsuited roles. Jye gets more time on ball despite being more adaptable. The club obviously see something at training because to me he's not shown much at all yet. Bytel showed much more in his first game than Caldy has so far. Like I keep saying others must see something in him so I'm willing to trust their judgement but he's still just another project mid.

The only thing about him that is preferable to others is he's bit more inside outside than some of the pure inside players like Hately and Brodie which I think is what we prefer. Hately looks like another Crouch type that will get lots of touches if you throw him in the middle.

I'd only consider training Seb if a midfielder that is already better than him came in, eg Taranto, Merrett etc.
Same. If we’re getting a younger player who could turn into something but is unknown I’d rather keep Seb. I admit I have been a critic of him in the past but i think his season since he came back in has been quite solid.

We wanted Caldwell and actively tried to trade back in to grab him, I imagine we inquired again in the last trade period.

People including players and coaches rate him as something special, so here is our best and if he lives up to potential probably only chance to get him to st Kilda.

Occasionally you have to be all in gringo, you just don’t get A grade mids very often let alone at bargain prices. Depending on how we rate this years draft we could just roll the dice but otherwise it’s put up or walk away.

If we could get Brayshaw & Caldwell without giving too much ie best 22 player I would be over the moon.

Gut says Angus would be more gettable than Taranto don’t really wanna give up a Billings/Gresh/Marshall for him.

Obviously there is a reason they were giving Caldwell tastes in the middle though over Hately.

That just proves my point, not the other way. Its much easier to get kicks off half back then it is as a pressure forward too.

Bytels first game was very impressive, but he was also given the opportunity to play most of the game in the guts due to injury. He was also dtopped 2 weeks later. Jye would not have got close to half a game their due to their stacked midfield.

I think that's a bit too simple.
You need to look at age and improvement Vs projected premiership window.

In your scenario I'd think it's Seb that would need fo find a new position, but his ball use precludes that.
The roll Ratts has him playing atm is now working well, but if we get a clearance beast in, then Steele can do the Ross roll better than Ross does and so on.

Since Seb has a good value and is on a good wicket, and we have 2 elite juniors to feed in to the midfield, you can trade him to improve another area of the list like a CHB or small forward.

I'm not bashing Seb here, l just think that's the way it would go.

I agree that Kent should be squeezed out, but l doubt it's by Gresh for positional reasons.

Essentially, if we bolster the top of our midfield with Taranto, and need to bring in Caldwell and Bytel (which we do) then the squeeze is on in both directions.
1.Taranto
2.Steele
3.Jones
4.Gresh
5.ROSS (trade)
6.Sincs
7.Caldwell
8.Bytel
9.Byrnes
10.DUNNY (trade)
11.Kent (trade/delist/depth)
Steele should be No.1 on this list. He is a much better player than Taranto right now.

Getting a mid for the now (Tarantula or Brayshaw) plus a mid for the future (Caldwell) would set us up perfectly. The other immediate gap we need to fill is a key back, assuming Carlisle departs.

Our trade assets include 2020 1st & 2021 1st & could include whatever we get for Carlisle, Lonie & Dunstan (if they leave). Would that be enough to get both Caldwell & Taranto?!

Dreamland trade period:

Keep Jake
Trade Ross for 2x 3rds and change
2nd in for Dunny with a 3rd going back
2nd in for Lonie with a 3rd going back

2020 & 2021 1sts, and 2x 2nds, for Taranto, Caldwell and Hill with some junk picks back.

Bundle our many junk picks to Sydney for their 2nd, roughly p28 after NGA bids.
Use that for whatever.. (swap for a future 2nd IMO)

Gut/elevate the rookie list, and get Sydney's and GWS' first round rookie picks in the above deals, exchanging our 1st and 2nd round rookie picks back. (only 2 rookies for 2021 under list reductions)

Deal with the CHB issue in 2021/22 after we have a look at Clav, and a new set of FA and DFA's become available.

Giants would not be keen, Hill isn’t steak knives in a trade either, showed lots this year. Taranto alone is worth 2 1st rounders and they’re not going to want to let Taranto and Caldwell go if Hately is leaving as well, that’s an exodus when you take into account Corr, Williams and possibly Cameron as well. They’re going to to fight tooth and nail for they’re players this off season you’d think hoping they bounce back next year and convince a lot of players to stay.
