He averages around 4 possessions a game more than Dunstan but wins more contested ball. He has less marks and worse disposal efficiency than Luke though so probably just the first use winning ability that makes him better. I think they are similar. Both early on looked like they might be guns, both have stayed a bit meh. Wines good games which only seem every 5 games or so are usually very good though where he gets 30 plus possessions. Luke is more consistent and generally gets low to mid 20s. Wines often gets low possession counts for some reason. To me he is an upgrade on Luke as a true inside mid but his limitations are the same ones Luke has.
Averages 25 possessions a game over 150 games.

I'd take him - not sure if I'd pay the price Port may want.

I really don’t think trading in a mid for a first rounder is the way to go. I’d be going all out for a FA - Williams would be ideal and drafting a mid with our first pick.

Would set up our midfield well. A core of Williams, Steele, Jones, Ross and Hanners (when he’s on the park). Byrnes, Bytel and the draftee as options/depth.

I’d then be tempted to move Gresham back to more of a permanent forward with the odd burst in the middle. He’s capable of being 40 plus goal kicker in a season I think, we just need to have the midfield cattle that ensures we don’t need him in there.

Yep give me Crouch or Williams as a free agent over Wines any day.

Imagine the rotation of Jones, Williams and Clark from Wing to half back to on ball. Holy moly.

not really what we need in terms of position but I’d really consider getting into witherden‘s ear. Damn good player and him Coffield and dougal would virtually set up our backline. He’d probably cost a second but I’d welcome him into our future second club.

Witherden would cost a first IMO. He is a gun.

I don’t think making a decision yet is the way to go. We should have every single option open

He isn’t a gun. He gets a lot of the ball but doesn’t do a lot with it. Isn’t he out of the side at the moment?

To me the only issue with him is he's ideally a half back. His disposal is good, he gets lots of ball etc. He's not playing ATM which is weird, he's played every game since he got into the side before that. I'd prefer Fiorini if I had the choice, he's more midfield potential than Witherden. 2 years ago both were the most exciting young players coming along. both have stalled this year but they are very young and you'd back them to start up again soon.

They might have looked good in an ordinary side. Both are second rounders at best.

Genuine question - are the Saints in a position to be chasing a free agent?

I know you guys had buckets of cash free prior to the 2019 trade period, but is there any idea of what kind of room is left after grabbing Howard, Butler, Ryder, Jones and Hill? Bruce leaving probably paid for the majority of Hill's contract, and I guess it could partially depend on who leaves this year.

You have Steele, Carlisle and Battle out of contract this year. Steele is playing insanely good and will be demanding a bigger contract than he might have got if he extended earlier. How long were Butler, Ryder and Jones picked up for? Footywire has them all as out of contract this year, but that can't be right..

Ryder signed for 2. I think Jones signed for 3. And Butler I'm unsure of - probably 2 or 3.

This year we are still paying about half of Jack Steven's big contract and Carlisle is on a large amount. Any new contract for him will be a lot less.

Ah right that's a good point about Carlisle especially - he signed on something massive like $800k didn't he? That and Steven will free up some cash. You probably also got Butler for far less than he appears to be worth this year...

In that case, given Williams will probably field offers around the $700k-$800k mark, Saints probably could make a good play for him. Would be an incredible fit, and make your lot even better to watch. I've always liked the Saints, but I'll be honest and say they've been horrible to watch the last couple of years. This year, Ratten has you guys playing such an exciting, entertaining style of footy, and Williams would only make it better

Yeah, between 700-800k for Carlisle this year because he hit his games trigger last year. If he stays with us, he'd probably only get offered about half of that which will help the cap heaps - probably about what we are paying Stuv this year so a Williams type would be right around the mark.

Ratts has made such a big difference by just playing a game style centred around the players playing to their own strengths. We have so many naturally attacking players so it seems ridiculous that Richo forced a defensive, dull game style on them for years then wondered why we weren't seeing the best of so many players.

Brut has answered better than I could. Don’t know our cap inside out. It’s a good question. We’re going to have several players expecting significant pay raises over the next few years so will need to manage the cap carefully. Clark, King, Gresham, Coffield, Marshall etc won’t be cheap re signings.

More than any others, I'm really enjoying seeing Long thrive this year. Came from our VFL side and sounded like we wanted him, but we took English at 19, then you got Long a few picks before our next (28). He's such an exciting player to watch, and I never would have guessed he'd play his best footy attacking off half back, but he's clearly suited to it

I think you guys being keen on him is a big reason why we jumped. Was an absolute bolter for most of us.

He was always good for a highlight but this year he's really added some substance and is a real presence out on the field (honestly he's even upped his highlight rate). Couple massive grabs on the weekend.

He played half back as a junior and in the VFL but we recruited him because of his performance as a forward in the VFL finals. I think most people were hesitant at first if it would work but he looks very natural in the backline.

During all the match sim in preseason, he played on at every opportunity and it was electric to watch. He seems to have dialled it back slightly and achieved a good balance in his game.

I’ve adjusted a few here for you. Paddy isn’t going anywhere, will be on the list again. All up 950k saving best case IMO.

Paddy? really, dhe will be open to anyone picking him up. and since their has been no games for him to play anywhere. not sure if he would be picked up. Especially if all clubs have to down size their lists to say 35 or so.

He will be offered more than that but only on a two year contract

McCartin...

McCartin and Young had contracts for this year. Maybe they were paid out under last year's SC, maybe this year. But all said and done, together its worth ballpark $450k+
"If" it falls under this year's cap, and you throw in $400k for Jack Steven, that's $850k we're paying for players no longer on our list.

There's your free agent right there. One can only hope so.

Didnt we pay out Paddy last year? We brought the payment forward which is why the club finances were at a loss last year.

Really hoping we have something up our sleeve like this. Surely we aren’t just swinging with what we got last year.
