I guess this is the crux of my question. How do we know they were paid from last years cap?
The article from the club was vague at best, and there was no reference to Young.
It's a reasonable assumption to say it was last year's cap given we were tracking around the minimum spend, but again nothing concrete is out there about it..

I remember reading it somewhere. do you want me to look for what i read????? i would have to back 6 months

He was just part of the attempt to get leg speed into the team. Hind and Parker the others.
Young just didn't make the cut, and we obviously wanted the list spot for someone with a chance. Also may have grated with others on the team if you believe the scuttlebutt..
why would that have happened?

It was in the 2019 financial statement. One of the reasons there wasn't a profit.

There you go, I thought with his player welfare background and study history might have made him the type that gets along with everyone. Wonder if it also had to do with not adjusting to moving to melbourne
Parker seems to have just disappeared as well he showed some real promise in patches last year wonder why his not getting a look in this year

We've been going all out for a FA for 5 years though. Unfortunately that has proven harder than we'd hoped.

If we'd landed our big name 5 years ago, we'd have probably gone full Judd with him, and he'd be looking at retiring around now.

True, but we’ve also been a horrendous side throughout that time. A lowly side, playing under Richo and based at Seaford was not a tempting prospect for players assessing their options.

It’s still too early to know how much we have improved, but it is clear we’re heading in the right direction now. Back at Moorabbin, stable administration, playing an exciting brand of footy under Ratten.

I reckon we’d be a pretty attractive option for the first time in quite a long time.

Any interest in Petruccelle? He's not getting much love on the main board.
I think he would have played under Coff at the knights.
3rd of 4th round pick perhaps, maybe a DFA...

I think he's had one blinder of a game out of 20 something.
What position would you play him?
Upgrade to Lonie?

Grabbed this from 2016 when we picked up Steele. Thought it would be fun to do a 4 year comparison. At the time this was every player on our list within 2 years of Steele - and before the draft.

Membrey: May 94
Pierce: November 94
Dunstan: January 95
Sinclair: Feb 95
Freeman: June 95
Billings: August 95
Templeton: August 95
Acres: October 95
Steele: December 95
McCartin: April 96
McKenzie: May 96
Lonie: August 96

Goddard: August 96
Coughlan: September 96
White: January 97
Rice: February 97
O'Kearney: February 97
Gresham: August 97

18 players. Only 7 remain. Likely to be 5 or 6 at the end of the year with Dmac (Sincs should be safe but who knows).

We clearly invested hard in that 95-97 age bracket and have continued to do so. Here's the same bracket today.

Kent Feb 94 (2018 trade period)
Membrey May 94 (2014 trade period)
Hind Aug 94 (2018 draft)
Dunstan Jan 95 (2013 draft)
Sinclair Feb 95 (2014 draft)
Jones Mar 95 (2019 trade period)
Austin Jul 95 (2017 trade period)
Billings Aug 95 (2013 draft)
Marsh Oct 95 (2019 trade period)
Marshall Nov 95 (2016 draft)
Steele Dec 95 (2016 trade period)

Parker Jan 96 (2018 draft)
Wilkie Mar 96 (2018 draft)
Howard Mar 96 (2019 trade period)

McKenzie May 96 (2014 draft)
Butler June 96 (2019 trade period)
Lonie Aug 96 (2014 draft)

Joyce Apr 97
Long Aug 97 (2016 draft)
Gresham Aug 97 (2015 draft)

20 players on the list currently. 12 of whom are in the best 22 right now (assuming Kent would be out for Jones if everyone healthy). Noted from the weekend, Battle (Sep 98), Paton (Oct 98), Clark (Mar 99), Coffield (Oct 99), King (Jul 00) make up another 5 of our best 22 who are younger than this group.

Meaning there were just 5 older in our team on the weekend.

Hill (Jul 93) - just misses my arbitrary cut off for the above group
Ross (May 93)
Snake (Oct 91)
Hanners (Feb 91)
Geary (Jun 88)

At some point we've had Pick 3, 10, 15, 18, 19 and 77 from the 2013 ND Draft. And added Sinclair, Austin, Marshall and Steele from the 1995 draft year. Clearly think pretty highly of the quality of that year!

Dunno what my overall point of this is but to have 20 of our list in the 23-26 group it's pretty clear what the aim is. Having a quarter of our best 22 being 20-22 is a good start also. If we continue to add to the 22-24 bracket with rookie picks, and smart trading we should be setting our list up for at least an extended run of being toward the top of the ladder.

The only players really any chance of retiring in the next 3 years are Geary, Brown and Ryder. All fantastic club men and their leadership/experience will be hard to replace but we did beat the premiers without all three of them just two weeks ago. And I have no doubt the vacuum they leave will be nothing like when we lost Roo/Joey/BJ/Dal/Hayes in previous years.

Even the next step on the age bracket only brings in Sav (29), Hanners, (29), Roberton (29), Abbott (29) and Carlisle (29 end of year). 3 of whom look set for an extended run in the reserves/we've moved past. Hanners has always been looked on as a bonus (I do hope we can get him right at the right time of the year) and we are still pretty heavily reliant on Snake but he's the youngest of this entire group and realistically has 4-5 years in him if we keep him injury free.

Anyway we could lose to Freo on the weekend and this will all look a lot less positive (and I've certainly done alaysis like this in the past for it to all go to shit eventually) but I think our list is looking pretty well balanced age wise. No it's not perfect and I'm concerned we lack that star factor to really give us a good chance at a flag. But the core of this side is very young and we've shown the capability to bring in a 'big name' and with what's looking like a decent 'window' we have a year or two to find that star quality as well.

Or you know, just give Hunter, Coff, Max and Billings a couple years ;)

Played same year at Knights as Coff and both played together Vic Metro (2017). Petruccelle was always a little light but has speed and endurance to burn. Provided the best 20m sprint time (2.87 seconds) of all draftees at the 2017 national combine. His first half a dozen games for WC were quality. Played High HF through wing with (very) shorts spurts in midfield. Was a stand out as a junior (basketball background for those that love that as well). Certainly fit into a HFF rotaion for us in my view.

I remember his all star game. He was so quick and looked a stand out at times. If you could work out how to use him well he could be a gun.

cooperg Is reporting that Constable wants out at Geelong. Surely we would entertain that, especially after we had a lean stance on Jack to go to them last year
If true then we should offer a 29 year old Carlisle for a 21 year old Constable as a straight swap. We have Logan Austin who can step into Carlisle's spot now he has recovered from his injuries.

With our picks in the ND this year I am hoping that we take the best players possible.

Hopefully if our form holds up the whole year we will be in a position to grab a Free Agent which obviously does not cost draft picks. If we were able to grab any of the 3 players below we would be well on our way to the top 4. The only question mark is do we still have that war chest of money after our trading spree from last year??

Zac Williams
Brad Couch
Rory Atkins

Note : Gags is a South Australian so go to work on the 2 SA based boys.

Thoughts??

I would have Carlisle over Austin every day of the week and twice on sunday...
A lot of people think that way but we are all going to be pleasantly surprised at how good Logan is. He may not have great endurance but his spoiling is elite and he has great closing speed so he can get the spoil in. The other benefit we get from doing this trade is we free up a lot of cap space which helps with FA's and cap space.

Logan Austin? Does he play games in the VFL?

He’s not fit to tie Jakes boots up, he’ll be lucky to be on an AFL list next year
