I believe Heeney would fit perfectly into our team, a high forward rotating through the mid. All year our 22 was pretty much the same apart from that position. Kent,Hind,Lonie and Sinclair also I think Phillips have rotated in and out of the team trying to fill this spot. Each has stood up at times but no one has done enough to cement there spot.
Heeney is a fantastic contested mark has a good ratio of cont/no cont ball possessions and would probably generate about 20 goals a year and can do decent mins in the center. His main draw card for me is that he is a match winner he is usually the one that stands of for the swans when needed. We have talent but lack that something special. Look at the Wce, Melb and Brisbane games we needed to someone to step up in those last quarters and Steele can only do so much.
Each team in the finals has at least one 20 goal HF, Coll - Mihocek De Goey(30+) Wce Cripps (not as much this year) Geel Ablett Dogs- Wallis
Port- Gray Bris- Zorko Rayner and McCluggage Rich- Castagna Martin.
And if not Heeney then someone similar I think its our most important need this draft/trade period.

Last time Gresham played a full season forward he kicked 36 goals.

Improve the midfield and we automatically improve the forward line.

By the time they cut the list sizes down and we pick a couple players they going after and draft a few kids , it is going to be tight for spots.
They will endeavor to pick up a decent midfielder and a Caldwell type , then add on say 3 kids in the draft.
That will mean we will need to just about de-list 10 players from our current squad.

We currently have 45 on our list including 4 rookies , if they cut it to 40 (some are saying 38)and 2 rookies , we lose 3 guys however whoever we bring in someone has to go out.
We know Brown has retired , but it will be interesting to see how ruthless they will be.
Will they de-list Savage , Parker , Austin , Marsh , Joyce , Langlands , Hind , Mayo and Abbott to fit in the new players - at least 6 or more of these guys will be let go.
I fully expect Alabakis to be kept on the rookie list to finish his contract and all the new kids from last year will be kept - Bell etc.

You will see a couple good players being released from other teams due to the smaller squads.
Rumor is that the drafting requirement will be cut to 2.

If we decide to keep our rookies they'll need to be upgraded, thus meeting our requirement.

We could indeed take no kids at the draft, then grab a couple of DFAs to fill the rookie spots.

Alabakis though will need to come off the cat B list if he's to be kept. I doubt that happens personally.

We currently have about 5 rookies - Mayo , Langlands , Bell , Joyce , Alabakais - suppose they could all go.

I think Libba will want to take one or two at least.

There will be some unknowns with the Vic kids but I'm tipping him to back himself in and get a beauty even if it's with a later pick.

I agree. You've got to keep taking kids even without an immediate need.
With list cuts and all, 2 is a good number, and I'd prefer load up from next year's draft anyway.

I'm thinking we won't have our first rounder at the draft, but I think the draft will work in our favour.

Sides like the Dogs will be using 3 draft picks to get one player which pushes our later picks higher up the order and the fact most clubs will be taking less players in the draft means will have more to choose from.

You mean we should be targeting someone who is an awkward match up for opposition teams because of their size, marking capacity, speed, ability to do something freakish and their capacity to kick a goal.

I hear this bloke is out of contract at the end of the year. I reckon we can pick him up pretty cheaply

Im guessing we have seen the last of him

Yeah it's funny how it's worked for us.
Those two mangy old 4th rounders will probably land in the 50's now.
Does that increase their value??
It bloody should..

Reports are that Cat.B rookies will remain additional to the list totals so no reason we cant keep him if they think he is tracking well.

Id love to know where the Heeney BS started , isnt he contracted for another two years ? I cant see any possible reason for Sydney wanting to let him go
Hahaha right on this forum. Track back 50 odd pages and you will find it somewhere in there.
Cant remember who first started it but has caught on like wildfire and spread across several forums.
Very funny once you catch on. Confusing if trying to catch up.

I'm not sure if you can remain a cat B for more than 2 years.

He'll have to be put on the main list, or at least become a cat A rookie.

I just don't see it happening. Not once has any poster made a favorable assessment of his ability..

I hope we cut pretty this year.
Alabakis, Austin, Mayo, Joyce, Brownie, Savage and Dinglands maybe.

Any current rookie worth keeping comes on to the main list on a 1 year deal. Take 2 fresh rookies or DFA's.

That would put pretty much every one of our fringe players OOC next year as we hit the strongest draft we're ever likely to see, and lists are further reduced pushing a better cut of DFA's into the market.

Anyway, l digress. No room for the Basketball player.
Bell looks a much better prospect.

We're trying to use meme magic to get Heeney to St Kilda, the same way meme magic was utilized to get Trump into the White House.

Yeah, but given the speculative nature of Cat B rookies, combined with the need for them to learn the game and the cancellation of the competition they would’ve been learning in, its not beyond possibility the AFL decides to extend that 2 year limit.

That would be reasonable for sure.
But it also comes down to how long do you give these types..

In recent history we've had Joyce, Connellon, Holmes and Alabakis that l can recall.
No matter how you slice it, that's a poor return in games and resources.
With hindsight, a complete loss.

Someone on the saints members facebook group seemed confidant it was going to drop to 42 next year but keep dropping the year after as well.

Would make sense to not have a big cull at one time
