If we trade our first this year (which given how high we will finish I wouldn’t be against, especially with a weird year of no 18s exposure) then I think we have to use our first next year? The rolling 2 in 3 year rule?

That 'rule' is now effectively optional since the cats were allowed to break it.
Basically you can break it if the AFL says you can (seriously).

As long as you can show you aren't throwing away your future on whatever trade you want to make with your future pick- you can break it

Do we actually know that this is the case or are we adding 1 plus 1 and getting 3? I read an article the other day (read so many I can’t remember which) that we were keen to have him stay. Maybe he wants more years than we want to give? Hopefully still sorting things out based on list requirements and budget for next year.
I cant see any club offering him 3 years , id say Two at best with maybe the option of a third based on games played , maybe he will stay with us on one year deals , we did that with a few players for years

We alsolutley cleaned up in the 2017 draft.

I'm biased of course, but I believe we have the two best players out of the top 20 taken.

(I wanted Clarke and Bonar)
Clark & Coffield were excellent decisions. The other player that has started to impress me on that list is Zac Bailey. Thought he had some real important moments in Brisbane's win against us and I really like the way he attacks the ball.

Post this last night, but will re iterate. If we have convinced Caldwell to come to us, we get the deal done for a number of reasons

1) GWS are fair and reasonable to deal with. We have had good relations in the past
2) We convince a player we really wanted at draft time, so much we tried to trade pick swap to get him, to come to us, we just get the deal done. Otherwise it sends a terrible signal to players and managers that we don't follow through on our promises.
3) One and two combined. Last year we dealt with a mini Dildoro in Bellend, we played it hard as we had 5 to get. We played it beautifully and delivered on each player that nominated the Saints as their new home. So this proved that we do what we say, and also can be flexible to and accommodate the clubs that we are trading with.

If he nominates us, it gets done.

Would have been good if we'd taken a shot at Hugh Greenwood, over and above Hill.

He's much better than anyone thought he'd be though. He looked pretty much like Jack Sinclair with less class when he was at Adelaide, he was obviously a pure inside mid and behind all their other gun insiders. I thought Ellis-Yolman would have more impact to be honest.

Carlton's two are very disappointing compared to those around them. Bonar looks like a pretty average player too. Got the Hugh Goddard potential gun as a 16 year old thing but didn't go on with it. I didn't realise Coleman-Jones had gone so high. It was a very good draft, heaps of talent in that lot.

The difference was that port were relatively happy to let doogie go, whereas gws are seemingly desperate to hang onto caldwell.

Sure doogie was contracted and caldwell wasn't- but in reality we wouldn't really entertain playing REAL hardball and potentially send caldwell into the draft (like what happened with jack martin last year)... so him being uncontracted doesn't help our negotiating position much.
It helps a little sure- but not so much that we could say '2nd rounder or no deal' to gws.

There really isn't much difference between our first and circa pick 22. We wouldn't risk losing caldwell completely in the draft over that little difference

It doesn't sound like they were happy to let Howard to go.

No question it gets done, I'm simply saying it won't get done for the bargain that steele was.

Our first rounder looks pretty close to the mark

They were.

They told him in his first exit meeting he won't be playing back and would have to fight for a spot forward.

They then got him back for a 2nd meeting and told him they would look at a trade for the right price which made it pretty clear to Doug's he was being pushed out the door which is why he flew to Melbourne to meet clubs.

Agreed, that trade was what? 4 years ago, we got Butler for a song, but if Richmond were on the downward slide not where they are, we don't get him for that price.
Things change, GWS were sorting through their riches, most they got rid of were good trades for them, with Steele probably the best let go. They seem to be on the downward slide and want to keep a young quality player.

I reckon Caldwell will cost more than a first, and supporters will whinge, like they did for two thirds of the season about Hill, but look what he brings in a big game.

He definately will cost more than Steele and I am willing to pay as the recruiters have runs on the board.

There would be a lot of contracts at all clubs that are waiting on confirmation of salary cap and list sizes. Jake is most likely one of those.
I can t see him going unless he wants to go or someone offers something ridiculous for him.

If we still have our first round pick after the trade period what are peoples thoughts on Archie Perkins? I've been pushing for depth in our HF/Mid position for a while and I think he fits that role perfectly.

God you can post some weird sh1t :drunk:

Just wondering why the huge hype on Caldwell? Hasn't exactly fired at AFL level yet.

Think you can take a lot out of what is said externally from GWS. They are clearly very keen to keep him. As others have said on here, they have been very quick to push others out, who they seemingly think wont make the grade.
Can remember when we traded for Steele, Phil Davis (i think) made the comment that if there was one young bloke he wanted to keep at the club it was Steele and he was extremely disappointed to see him go.

From memory it was Callan Ward who said that about Steele.

Not sure why - he hasn't got a contract, he can't get a regular game - Steele was a better performer at the same age.

You don't pay overs simply because another club paid overs at the draft table. Mid 20's pick - so our first and a 3rd rounder back.

Surely we’d need to offer four years to get him to move.
Hopefully his love for the Saints as a kid will be the impetus to get him over the line.
(Are the Giants just upping the ante to get more for him?)
He'll get AFL coin if they think he'll go, same phone call Bing got.

Herald-Sun reported today that Carlisle is keen to stay at the club. Doesn’t want to leave.

Looks like the ball is in the club’s court.

It was also reported in the Herald-Sun that neither Carlisle or the club has ruled out the possibility that Carlisle flies to Adelaide and plays in the Preliminary Final (if we make it).
