There’s a lot or talk about giving up a future second instead of a first etc but I think we sometimes forget how much of a variation there is within a round of picks.
If us and the pies lose this week then we have pick 14, that becomes 15 with Zac Williams compo and potentially 16 or 17 with Brad Crouch & Joe Daniher compo.
Then you add in the Academy/Father Son picks and for example, our first live pick that started at 14 becomes pick 25.
If people forgot about rounds and just said yep pick 25 for Caldwell then I think most would think that’s fair. In fact the future 2nd we paid for Steele, ended up being pick 27 on draft night a year later, so it’s quite possible that our first this year will be almost the equivalent of the future seconds we used to throw around when we were no good.

Hately was picked in the same draft at pick 14 and Jye was pick 11. Their trade values should be similar imo.

Jye is higher rated pre & post draft. He was being considered at pick 4 & 6 by us & Gold Coast. Hately was always in the 10-20 range & never a top 4-6 consideration.

Pick 15 in a compromised draft for Caldwell is fair. I anticipate Hately will go for closer to pick 25.

Another way to look at draft selection is instead of the number picked at eg Caldwell at 11 is to look at how many midfielders were taken in front of him.
He was the fifth midfielder chosen in a super draft.
I would be happy to give up pick 14ish for the fifth best mid

As a pure mid he was third best behind Walsh & Smith. The rest of the top 10 were small, medium & tall forwards/utilities.

With the team numbers being cut this year I think for us any trades need to be for our best 22, Would Caldwell be a walk up start with Gresh healthy and more time into Bytel?
Agian thoughts on Archie Perkins for the draft?

Archie Perkins m/f, might be a great get - not sure he will be there at #14 tho - if they keep it?

Another who may be there at that DP is Heath Chapman, def

Hately edges out Caldwell in just about every category bar tackles in their exposed form at senior level so far.

They should be similar values really, but Adelaide have the leverage of Hately walking to the PSD so GWS might get slightly less.

He must have been rated higher but they have played similar number of games and haven't been able to cement a spot in the team. Don't think Jye should cost more than Hately but I'm confident of he nominated us we will get the deal done

He would absolutely be a walk up start as long as Dean Kent is.

Yep, completely agree on all points. Those are important. Very clear the Giants rate him much higher and we have long had a crush on Caldwell.

Couple of very good additions. If those two come in and have an impact and Cripps can get back to his best form, they should be an improved team.
Agreed.

They have clearly over paid in dollars but tthey got themselves in a position where they can, just like we did with Hill and Hanners.

They will be able to heavily front load their contracts apparently.
