we need a mid to run with Steele. i can't see us turning our back on Crouch now. we have gone too far down the path.

plus we have a good rep right now. we get trades done. so player managers know our club will get their player to our club. which is one of their biggest concerns and a big source of anxiety in players and their management.

it'd be a terrible look to then drop crouch because the cost was too high.

I just hope they don’t match so we don’t need to worry about which draft picks get it done.

but I’d be surprised if we let him go as much as most people here don’t want to trade for him.

We showed last year that once a player nominates us we get the deal done. Crouch will be a Saint next year.

Agree
But if we have offered 5 x 650 and he has agreed to that we then don't go oh Crows want pick two lets give him 5 x 800
We got him at 5 x 650 because he is a RFA and he f****d up at the end of the year

I’m actually more confident of crouch than I am of Higgins.

i think there might be some magic going on with the length of the contract and condensing how much he earns...

but if we can't get the pick 2 compo for them without paying more, i think trade is likely which tbh i think will reduce what adelaide can get for him

If we land Higgins, we need to send a thank you hamper to Dan Rioli.
His ability to get games ahead of Butler and Higgins despite being horrible has been a huge helping hand for us.
You spelled Jason Castagna wrong

I like Crouch but not at a big cost. If Adelaide want to play silly buggers we shouldn't budge.
I think we have enough improvement in Clark and Bytel to cover him and if we want to spend big on someone it should be someone better than Crouch, who is a FA being booted out the door.

While there is some truth in that, we also shouldn't pull our pants down to make it happen. I trust that we've got good operators in place now, and we do have a fair bit of leverage in this particular situation as Adelaide being stuck with crouch on big money and a long term contract is not something they want. It really seems to be a buyers market this year, so if we did miss out or pass on Crouch because Adelaide want to be unrealistic, it's Adelaide that will make it's own bed and will pay the price. We simply pivot and move on to plan B.

Are contingent years treated like contingent bonuses for Free Agency purposes? I’m Pretty sure I read that you don’t have to account for possible AA bonuses etc for “matching” purposes.. what wondering whether same is true for years of a contract contingent on trigger and compensation pick calc ?

if not counted for matching (and assuming compensation also), then perhaps we make 5th year contingent with low (highly likely to be met threshold), e.g. 20 games in previously 2 years, andfront end contract?

E.g. year 1-4 = $850k, year 5 (contingent/if triggered) $350k.

If we are paying him $850k for 4 years we have lost the plot
By front ending it, it will stuff our SC for the next 3 years

not entirely true, once the paper work is lodged, if adelaide match the deal, he is still a contracted crow but he is coming out of contract. exactly like say Lonie right now.
only if he signs the Crows contract .. as the paperwork has been lodged for his transfer the new matched offer becomes his new contract should he sign it .. if he doesnt sign it his contract with the crows ends and his only option is the draft ... i dont think the crows can match the FA offer and still have him contracted to his old contract at the same time otherwise free agency wouldnt work and every club would jus match the offer and trade them under their old contract ..

the cost has been agreed too though ... this is the point people are missing ... we put an offer to Brad and he accepted it as a free agent thats all we have to appease if the crows choose to match it the thats their right as the owning club of the restricted free agent .. its not on St Kilda to then upp the offer and run through a trade option for him we have given our offer its been accepted the rest is between Brad and the crows ...
its not like the Hill trade where we did all the wooing of Hill and got him to choose us but then we HAD to get the trade done therwise we look like amateurs .. Hill being contracted and not a FA meant the pressure was on us to get the deal done , with Crouch the pressure isnt on us to do the deal , we have done the deal the pressure is on the Crows to either let him go and take the compo or match and either try to trade or accept that they have him on the contract they never wanted to give him ...
St Kilda come out clean in this what ever way you look at it
