Their cap is starting to become as credible as Collingwoods, and we could be certain that the AFL will put on the blinkers when it comes to them.

Zac Williams the one to go next year

Or gws pay up for him and let their kids Caldwell, Hately and O’Halloran all out of contract go cheaply

Or the third option of Kelly wanting to go home finally and them letting him to keep all the above

I think the SA clubs would be front of the queue for Hately great man

Absolutely.

People forget Greene as well.

Let's see if this add's up:

More than likely $1m+ for Kelly:

Coniglio:

Whitfield:

Cameron, Taranto, Davis, Ward, Haynes, Williams, Shaw, Himmelberg, Hopper?

Between Cameron, Kelly, Coniglio, Whitfield & Greene they have to be paying at least 40% of the cap.

Then they have on average $198k to pay the rest of their playing list, with the likes of Taranto, Davis, Ward, Shaw, Williams all being on 3 or 4 x that in reality.....

There's a shitload of "ambassadorial" money obviously....

Excellent post. :thumbsu:

Well, there you go. Here is the AFL's "fine print".

Be a very interesting year, with the compromised draft due to academy players, GWS in points defecit and filling up their cap space, meanwhile we've quietly acquired a second 1st round draft pick, and a second. Appears we may have a cunning plan in place.

Kelly until the end of 2021?

I thought it was the end of 2020 after signing a two year deal before the start of the 2019 season.

Intersting.

Well let the situation unfold at collingwood, de geoy, give him a massive go, let's pump up his price to a point of being very uncomfortable for collingwood. He isn't exactly martin 2017 so out of the big 3, he comes 3rd. We have a culture and history of taking players to the next level. De Goey in blue and white might just become the next martin.

Don't say you weren't warned.

GWS will be the first team with a starting 18 all on million a year.

Pretty clever operators GWS, sign him to start of free agency, he walks for "a" compo pick. Sign him to a year before, punters have to trade for him guaranteed better than any compo pick. They have a well assembled pipeliine of talent coming through, and given he seems to be somewhat injury prone since his breakout year, they may decide their salary cap is better spent elsewhere.

Ol Jase McCartney is a smart operator wish we could have poached him

Wouldn't call them particularly clever operators. Every club in the league would aim to maximise their assets in that way.

Maybe their execution (not their strategy) deserves praise but lets temper the sausage sucking with the fact it appears their 'salary cap' is coincidentally the same as the AFL's Western Sydney marketing budget.

At the risk of bringing sanity to the GWS discussion, for every big deal they sign, they also unload a major salary pretty much every year too.

Patton, Shiel, Scully.

All of those would have been on serious $$$ and all have left in the last two years.

That's where they are getting the cap room.

(Pykie) You may be right but note the "as much as" and "reportedly" on the alleged million dollar a year contracts. Is that on the same scale as the $900k we were reported to have offered Papley?

They would have 8-10 of their 22 on close to a million a year going into 2020 regardless of players who have come and gone over the season.

That’s the rest of the list having to fit into roughly $5m.

This is why salaries should be public knowledge.

And they dump salary at lower levels too. Ahern, Bonar, I'm sure some of the duds they unloaded on Carlton were on good coin relative to their output.

Just stfu you campaigners.

The AFL is becoming like those viruses people will start getting as soon as they start enhancing their neurology with circuitry. You know the ones, they'll be running non stop ads for McDonald's, sanitary napkins and political parties in the corner of your eye 24/7. Don't even think about the audio.

They want to dominate Melb media all year.

Personally I think the AFL has been enacting far too many changes far too quickly, both on and off the field.

However another trade period isn't an awful idea. A lot of things happen during the draft, and a lot of clubs would come out of it unhappy with what transpired, while others may have got their goals and then a high quality slider they might be able to ontrade for a better pick the year after or even a player that better suits their needs.

I'd rather we just put a moratorium on major changes for the next 2-3 years though tbh. Let everyone adjust to the current state of play.
