Apparently it was very popular during the 50s, 60s & 70s in particular after much of the public service was moved up from Melbourne to Canberra. But there is still a fairly strong underlying popularity of AFL I would have to say. In another ~30 years Canberra could well be big enough to have its own team and it would probably be quite successful I think (in terms of being able to stand on its own feet rather than being a financial burden on the competition). But it's needed as a secondary market for GWS for the foreseeable future.

As a side note I reckon the Canberra market would adopt a relocated team better than other markets would.
GWS has a huge target population. It's ridiculous they use Canberra as a secondary market.

True, but it's the reality of the market for now. I was in Sydney mid-2000s and it was amazing how many primary school kids were playing AFL. Not sure if it's the same now, but even if a large percentage of those kids stay with AFL it is another decade or so before they start buying memberships and another decade after that before they have kids that they sign up and start taking to games. I think GWS will be able to stand on their own it time, but it will still take some time yet. Gold Coast on the other hand.....

A lot of key backs out of contract
Darcy Moore
Nathan Broad
Josh Battle
Aidan Corr FA
Brennan Cox

Josh Battle is the one, especially if he can't crack the side. They rate him highly but they've also made their bed targeting Carlisle and then Howard recently, let alone guys also there like Geary, Wilkie, Roberton, Webster, Austin, McKenzie... they're stacked for medium to tall key defenders.

A key back is one I'd be happier to search for via the draft, at least at this point. Whilst we have a looming crunch point for this position, at the moment we have Tarrant, Daw, Walker, Durdin & McKay. The first 3 should have a good couple of years ahead of them at least and Durdin is pretty solid as a No. 4.

We could trade for a Battle or Cox and they would be an upgrade on Durdin and McKay, but they'd probably still be battling to get a game and therefore not worth the cost. Also would mean we aren't a desirable option for these guys.

Use one of our high draft picks this year on a key back and hopefully they are cherry ripe about the same time that Taz and Maj move on.

2016 AFL Draft - Round 2

Pick 34 - North Melbourne - Declan Watson
Pick 39 - St Kilda - Josh Battle
Pick 40 - Geelong - Tom Stewart
Pick 41 - Fremantle - Brennan Cox

It was a shit pick at the time and a shitful pick now with hindsight. What were they thinking?

He's out of contract in 2020 and hasn't re-signed from his initial draft contract.

So until he has re-signed, as an interstate GWS kid, we assume his intention is to potentially come back like GWS seem to lose each year.

I think they would prefer to lose Hately (SA) before Caldwell though.

you’d imagine the crows would be all over him right now. Build theirfuture midfield around chayce Jones and hately.

I’d love for us to use both our first rounders at the draft and have a genuine crack at Williams a FA.

whilst we have a good crop of young fellas coming through, it’s never going to hurt to keep adding to that with high end youth. Plus not all will develop to the elite level that we expect 1st rounders to

I’ve said this for a while, the key position defender that we should target is Sam Collins from GC.
Has played well so far this year, did the job on Kennedy last week.
At 26 is in his peak as well.
Let’s see how he goes today against Adelaide’s key position forwards.

This is why we shouldn’t be wasting a first rounder on a kpd ever again.
You can get decent enough key backs from the state leagues. Get them when they a mature and you know what you’re getting - instead of waiting For 3-5 yrs to see if they’ll make it.

Lets hope having recruiting different personal this year and Brady there, we might do better in the draft. Durdin, Mckay, Niellsen, Watson, vickers-Willis. Thats what we've picked up in terms of kpd. of all of them only one looks to have the potential to make it (EVW) 2 are gone and and the other 2 are on the ropes. who the **** made these decisions!

Crows going to have 1 and 2, plus the GWS 1st round pick.
It’s an incredibly good draft hand.

only thing I like about it is they bid on everything when it comes to FS and academy players.
The other things I like about it is a) the number of good players who frequently leave Adelaide and b) our record trading with them.

And generally SA clubs lean towards taking home grown talent which makes it more likely non-SA players slide further to us potentially

Where on the field is Adam Cerra playing for Freo? i've not caught any of their games, but liked him in his draft year, and recall some murmurs he wasn't that happy there. Mind you there was also murmurs we were trading for Hugh Mcluggage two years ago haha
