Our next president

Tarrant might not be with us next year.
Tarrant might not be with us next year.
Just saw McKenna take the ball on the wing, tuck it under his arm and burn off two players, deliver inside 50.
As a north supporter I didn’t think that was allowed.
I think Zac Williams for free would be a perfect acquisition for us.
Some might see it as counteractive to a rebuild, but he’s the right option for a few reasons.
1. Half back is probably the biggest hole on our list. The current crop rotating through in Atley, Pittard, Macmillan, Williams haven’t been and never will be the game-breaking types that run the lines and use dare and dash. McDonald our best contributor at the moment but he’s a vastly different player to Williams, and Hayden is turning into more of a small lockdown guy that occasionally takes it on up the field.
2. The kids who are being groomed for HB are either unknown quantities at this stage or most likely not up to it. Perez is coming off a 2 year knee injury, Murphy can’t get a gig right now and isn’t the speedy type anyway, Bonar looks okay but is still a question mark. The Ahern experiment didn’t work.
Some might be against such an acquisition during a rebuild, citing that we should perhaps “play the kids”, but as above there are just a lack of surefire options. IIRC Zac is only 26 and would be a great bridge player between the elder guys (Atley, JMac, etc.) and the young guys coming through (Perez, Bonar) plus the players we hope to draft in the future.
The question remains on whether Williams would even want to leave a contender for us, but money may talk. We know 99% of what comes out of Tom Browne’s gob is utter sh*te but if we could lure him here for free it would be PERFECT for us as we begin a clean out of the list. Wouldn’t have to part with a prized draft pick either, unless GWS matched, which, with their cap squeeze (if they even have a cap) is pretty unlikely.
Only if they don't match the terms. If they do, you have to trade for him. i.e Dangerfield/Geelong trade with Adelaide.Couple of things in this last paragraph....the contender you speak of are currently 8 and fort Zac had first hand experience of what we can do back in June...
Second pt, he is a restricted free agent so we would never have to part with a pick...

And as Roo Beauty points out cap issues at GWS make it highly unlikely that GWS can match any offer for Williams. The only way he stays at GWS is if he is willing to forgo $1.5m to $2.0m over the remaining prime years of his career, or there is some other sequence of events that results in a large chunk of the GWS existing salary commitments leaving the club. You would think that one or both of Jeremy Cameron and Josh Kelly would have to leave for that to eventuate.Only if they don't match the terms. That's exactly what I hate about it! It gives the opposition supporters fuel to continuously attack our club.Great...it’s begun again! Can’t wait for all these knobhead opposition flogs to take the piss out of us again, after taking everything these wastemen say as gospel. I’m sure we’ll be linked with every out of contract player during the offseason again.
FYI, I hope we sign Williams at least.
It will become a list balancing act for them. They're at the stage where they probably have to look at preferring some of the kids over the 26+ demographic, as there window is starting to wobble.

Yep. They have a balancing act as you say as they have paid big coin to lock in their group of stars meaning they are trying to hold the rest of the list together for perhaps less than they can get elsewhere with the allure of playing in a flag. If the players think the window is closing then the middle tier will all go chasing dollars.
Out of that list though the biggest issue for them is clearly Cameron. They will be desperate to keep him and it is a certainty that another club will put something like $5 million over 5 years on the table for him to leave. Everything revolves around him.
I think with players like Terranto, Hopper, Coniglio, and Whitfield in the middle, and Cameron, Green, Himmelberg, and Finlayson in the forward half, they will believe the window is still open. They have put a lot of faith in a coach that hasn't really proven anything. What would Clarko have done with the same list?
They would want to keep Cameron/Green/Kelly/Coniglio/Whitfield together as the next senior group and reinforce them with Himmelberg/Finlayson/Hopper/Taranto/Perryman/Daniels/Taylor............then Hill/Caldwell/Hately/Green/Ash.
They also have to go out & prioritize a ready to go ruckman and a KPD if they let Corr go, and I can see them preferencing Corr over Williams from a list balance perspective. These double player raids are a very canny strategy for getting what you really want (Williams).
To North for 7 x $10 million a year?
pretty different players IMO, Hipwood isnt a strong contested possession getter, but more a lead up and decent set shot, danaher on the other hand great contested mark but pretty poor set shot.Hipwood is the same player except he plays.
