This is interesting but I have a few issues with it.We have good faith that people are posting things that are true. We have good faith that people are communicating openly and honestly with one another. Our algorithms have good faith that a thing that says it’s news is news. That’s the kind of openness of the system that we built. And now we’ve realized that you only get a few good years with that, because bad people with bad intentions figure out how to use that system to their own ends.

Did anyone see that show Absolute Power? It was a BBC comedy about a very well connected PR firm run by Stephen Fry and some other British actor. So that is 15 years old and was funny cos back then we were already cynical enough not to trust any good intentions in public messaging. No one is acting in good faith. The entire internet is people trying to sell s**t. Even here we're trying to sell the idea about how awesome North Melbourne is. (Youse might not realise this yet but it'll become apparent soon enough. Maturity comes to all of us eventually.)

That moment is never coming. Expecting it to flies in the face of what has happened with every form of communication that humans have ever developed. Nothing is true. Everything is permitted. Literally as well as metaphorically. You can't change that or legislate it away or anything. You have to learn to navigate it. The only way to do that is by teaching critical thinking from a very young age.
I don’t want to say that it’s as if some groups of people have been mindlessly deluded into this, or that somehow technology performed hypnosis. These are people who believe the system is woefully broken—which a lot of us can agree with. But they’ve also chosen who they’re going to believe. And in that case, they’re not operating on facts; they’re operating on belief. And they believe Trump was chosen by God, and that he called upon them to go to the Capitol and save him.
Everything performs hypnosis. We are born with minds that are waiting to be brainwashed into our culture, whatever that culture is. The process of socialisation is a form of hypnosis, its just one we approve of. And there is a reason those people choose what they believe. Its because the old hypnotic trance broke. The old socialisation failed. They no longer trust it. They no longer believe the myths about their society that they are exposed to thru the mainstream. (Main stream ... its a concsensus feed that defines reality.) And they were primed to believe something else because they have been primed with that alternative info for a long time (possibly by racist families and local communities) - its the "paranoid style in US politics". John Birchers, McCarthyism and who knows what came before that cos it was there, didn't start in the 1950s.
This is why the things Stanton talks about in that article will probably keep happening. He doesn't get that bit. The Why people make that choice. They don't trust the facts Stanton would still cling to cos they from the same system those people think is broken. (Althopugh he does have a good grasp on the How, to his credit.) For example:
As you look at these “red pills,” you realize that they all they almost always come in a package. And the hardest one is actually the oldest: “It’s the Jews.” But very rarely do we hear a radicalized podcaster start with the Jews, because we have a society where people hear that and right away it raises flags: “Did I just hear you say ... ?” So, they start [more subtly] and move towards the “Jewish question.” They pose this idea that actually everyone you voted for has nothing to do with the governance of the country, and that it’s really this small group of people controlling the government, controlling the media, controlling entertainment. And you can see it laid out on some of the anonymous message boards, the memes that just freely circulate: “Here are all the Jewish people that work at CNN.”
Why is it so easy to believe this?
Because of the US system - its not the Jews doing this, tho some individuals may be Jewish, its late stage neoliberal capitalism. The Jews didn't organise lobbying, its as old as the old school tie in England (or something similar in Rome or Athens.) Its just how power structures work. Replace Jews with "financial ruling class" and its suddenly alot more accurate. But that leads to Communism. (Or societies like Australia where we have strong democratic institutions limiting (well they used to limit) financial and other forms of power and levelling the playing field, because we don't want a commie uprising.)
People who should be criticising this, including much of the new left aren't suffering from the system enough to see it. They have a future and think their kids might too. They see it in things like BLM and can support it but there is an element of snobbery and classism that stops them acknowledging the poor white people being screwed. So as always happens when this stuff comes up ...

All you can do is now wonder what "they" are doing? Where the cult has gone. Maybe you're starting to feel a bit uneasy, because of all the irregularities in protocol and the fury of Biden's policies. Maybe some of you might be second guessing yourselves, you know, because things are starting to add up for the constitutionalists. Buck up though you lot. You think you're winners so I'd be making the most of it. Things change.
By but still, I mean, I appreciate that sentiment. I expect they do feel used. All that BurningLootingMurdering that they did. They worked hard for months fgs. They thought people liked them doing it, because in the democratic states, well they were allowed to. And now everybody wants them to stop. They might even be losing the funding they were getting. It's not fair. I can get that they might be coming to this realisation.

That is plain laughable. It's ok though, because BLM isn't real. Biden said they were just an idea didn't he, so now it is for him to stop the manifestation of that idea if it's not too late, or else it's going to seriously affect his polling. Most people just aren't that into it afterall.
Those certainly are all words, they do need a good dressing though.
